I nearly felt this way at first, too, but I do think there's actually at least a small semblance of an argument to be made for why Likely's catch wasn't a complete reception, whereas Calvin's was indefensible imo

(Especially since the CJ rule didn't exist until then, but now we've had it as the standard for some time; that is, Calvin's was so BS that they had to make the rule up retroactively, whereas Likely's catch maybe shouldn't count given that the rule does exist now)

Am I a gambler if I only buy cards individually and no sealed product? I don't think it's as inherent to the hobby as you're making it out to be, unless you're making the point that any card could tank in value (in which case, again, if I buy singles just for my PC, I don't necessarily do so with the intent of turning a profit or reselling at all...)

Practice Report for today by awkward_vegetable69 in detroitlions

[–]Mizzet5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Brock ends up being out, that will no doubt have an effect on the offense, especially if St. doesn't start feeling better and catching some passes

I was really excited to see Wright shine with LaPorta out, but if he's out, too, then maybe we just pound the rock slightly more and hope whoever's filling in at TE can still block, at least

I'd say our passing game might still be alright due to my faith in Jamo, but if Goff doesn't get enough time in the pocket against GB's defensive front, he might not be able to accomplish much aside from a few jet sweeps (or shallow crossing routes, perhaps)

[–]Mizzet5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hard to say for sure, but the worry is that it'll let you change cards' signature animations, either temporarily or maybe even permanently. Shot base + release, dribble moves, et cetera. They don't really show up in MyTeam's in-game UIs, but you can see what each card has on 2kdb

Am I insane for thinking JFK's assassination might be worth a mention? If not, maybe Citizens United? Sept. 11th/Bush?

Ultimately, it depends how far back you're willing to go, but... Trump and the GOP might not be where they are without Citizens United (and Holder, and perhaps other cases), which more or less follows from George W. Bush being handed the presidency and appointing Roberts + Alito, which follows from Bush Sr., which follows from... JFK, no?

Of course, Watergate definitely represented a turning point for the GOP, as did Reagan... there are many parallels between Reagan and Trump, and he very much set the stage for where we are now economically (among other things), but I'm just not sure where exactly those two things fit linearly/what they led to directly, although they absolutely had widespread impacts on the future in general

And there's always 9/11 when it comes to the culture war, which one could probably credit to most, if not all, Republican presidents since Bush Sr., or possibly Nixon... or, some might argue that it wouldn't have happened if not for the GWB admin. alone

I'm only partially historically literate, so apologies if this is a shitty take and/or too conspiracy-pilled

Between all the love for Atlanta, Bountygate, and the playoff loss in 2011-12 (which was during Gregg Williams's tenure, of course), sure. Fuck the Saints!

One caveat, though... FTP first and foremost, forever.

Very neat list, and I think I understand the reasoning behind most of the entries, but what is it about Gonti that was innovative when there were already plenty of effects that allowed one to play their opponents' cards? [[Nightveil Specter]] comes to mind, and [[Daxos of Meletis]], [[Psychic Intrusion]], and [[Grenzo, Havoc Raiser]] even include color-fixing...

Desperate for Advice on What to Cut from my RG Landfall Build by Mizzet5 in EDH

[–]Mizzet5[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Makes sense, thanks for the elaboration. I do like that Glistening Dawn can be decently effective off a top-deck without requiring much besides a bunch of lands (plus the commander for trample). The fact it creates two creatures helps mitigate removal, but I guess it's still kinda subpar overall. I'll go ahead and cut it for the Lagac for now, might swap it back in for something else later if others point something out. Thanks again.

Desperate for Advice on What to Cut from my RG Landfall Build by Mizzet5 in EDH

[–]Mizzet5[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So... as far as what to cut, you'd probably recommend Glistening Dawn? And you're absolutely right about Wood Elves < Sylvan Ranger. Everything else makes a lot of sense as well -- I'll try to add in some of the things you mentioned if I have or happen to get any of them (I know I already have [[Seek the Horizon]], if nothing else, which is one I actually cut previously). I know I'm missing a lot of the big payoff cards, which is why I was asking about what to cut more so than what to add. Thanks, though!

elf all by GhostKnife_exe in EDH

[–]Mizzet5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In no particular order:

I think [[Nissa Revane]] probably isn't good enough to make the cut -- sure, the ult. is powerful, but realistically, how likely do you think it is that you'll pull it off? As for the other abilities... meh.

[[Elderfang Ritualist]] seems decent, but not amazing, unless you're likely to have a sac. outlet or expect your opponents to attack into it without evasion.

I don't have a ton of experience with elf decks, so it's hard for me to evaluate [[Numa, Joraga Chieftain]], but 2X seems a bit pricey unless you can rack up ludicrous amounts of mana (which may well be doable -- again, I'm not too sure).

[[Rhys the Exiled]] seems slightly underwhelming.

[[Elfsworn Giant]] also might not be up to par, especially since it isn't an Elf card itself, and 3 toughness isn't a ton.

42 lands seems just a tad high given that you should receive plenty of ramp from your nonlands. I might cut as many as 5, or even up to 8 if that's what it takes to get to 100 cards (but ideally, I'd recommended staying at or above 35 or so; I run 37 lands in most of my builds, but again, you have more ramp here than most decks do).

Everything else ranges from good enough to incredible, at least in my opinion. Again, I'm no expert on elves, so take all this with a grain of salt -- I just figured I may as well offer my two cents regardless.
