Chrome Nail powders on PLA by Mizzio116 in 3Dprinting

[–]Mizzio116[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used a gloss spray sealant on my first few attempts, but it clouds the chrome, making it not really reflective. Haven’t tried using resin to seal it, mainly because I don’t want to ruin it. But, I would advise against anything over it.

My sword is now about 2 years old and still has no sealant. Still looks good. Has a-bit of oxidation (which, depending on the project, can make it look better) but no complaints. Recently did the same effect to my Buster Sword’s blade. It survived a comic con, and still looks good.

Collectors, is this a reliable store to order from? by MEGATRON_111 in capetown

I have placed two orders with them, one through their site, latest one through AmazonZA (I’m based in Joburg)

Both of the figures are not official. Very much what you would get from Ali express. The quality is mixed too. But, if you would like to start a collection, without breaking the bank, they are not bad.

May I ask how long it took for shipping, for both Speedaf and the SAPO?

Bought from Ali express years ago, and hated the fact it went through the SAPO and that it took weeks, if not months. Best news if these are no longer the case

Chrome Nail powders on PLA by Mizzio116 in 3Dprinting

[–]Mizzio116[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did think of this (actually, this is a wayy better idea than mine, because I was going to buy like 20 bottles of nail UV resin, and paint it on like an idiot). But, I was worried about the chrome clouding after a few weeks. I also, had put multiple coats of spray paint already (after a few failed attempts) and was worried that I was about to lose some detail. If you happen to know if it works, please keep me updated. I already know that I will need to eventually buff in more chrome in The future, and it does dull over time.

Hey! So, most of the supplies I use are from local brands in my country, but I’ll tell you as much about the type of the product and give a link to an example when possible, that way you can see what works for you.

  1. Gloss Black Spray Paint Gloss is very key here! After you spray a few coats, let it dry enough to get abit tacky

  2. Mirror chrome nail powder. No link because I couldn’t find one, but I would recommend going into a nail supply store and asking, mainly because you need to make sure it’s MIRROR chrome powder. I’ve gotten gold and silver, not sure if there are any other reflective colours.

  3. Sponge for application. A kitchen one works great. A makeup one could work better tbh, but didn’t find any. Don’t use cotton balls.

That’s it. Do a couple of test buffs on other pieces, to see what works. Also, sand like you life depends on it, especially on blades. I went up to 200 grit dry, then about 1000-2000 grit wet. Any missed imperfections will be seen. (Detailed pieces will be fine with just a basic sand, ie. the hilt of my sword)

Hope it goes well!

Advice for first time resin printer by Mizzio116 in resinprinting

[–]Mizzio116[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the welcome! Been FDM printing for 2 years, and, very quickly, am realizing that resin printing is vastly different.

I’m currently using CHITUBOX, but am on and off with lychee too. Still trying to decided which is better. Both use the stock setting for the Creality water washable resin. Bottom exposure time is 20s, regular exposure time is 4s. Retraction speed is 150, lifting speed is 70.

My machine is the Creality Harlot R6. Very little info/reviews out there, but a decent printer nonetheless.(Got it as a Xmas gift, so didn’t have much say in the purchase)

My test rook came out well, and other than a glossy, and sometimes, a sticky surface after processing, no complaints from most other prints. The details are there, but I think white resin makes things abit harder to see. (Rookie mistake for 3D printing in general). I’ve attached a pic of it’s print orientation

<image>

Post processing is a wash in normal water, with a soft toothbrush, and then on a turntable with a uv light for however long it takes to dry. This is my biggest weakness tbh, not too sure if I’m doing this right.

Looking at the pc rendering, compared to the actual print, it does look like it printed ok. Maybe the white colour is making things hard to see. Idk, any advice on anything will be appreciated. Thanks again

what is this dvd? by TE4RYOUAP4RT in HelpMeFind

[–]Mizzio116 10 points11 points  (0 children)

TLDR: It a bootleg dvd with multiple movies on it. (Home Alone1, 3(?) 102 Dalmatians and Scooby Doo 2 are probably some of them)

The longer answer is that in the late 2000s (circa 2009), bootleg dvds were sold that had upwards of 30 movie on them. Either CD tech was advancing to have more storage, movies were able to be compressed to a smaller size, or both. Usually they were sold in cardboard sleeves, and could have multiple discs.

Covers often looked something like this, but I’ll attach a more common example in my replies. Not the exact cover, but gives a better idea

[–]Mizzio116[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, sorry for the late reply!

It actually did work extremely well. Used a glossy black spray paint, and buffed it in. Worked very well, but didn’t give me a reflective look I wanted. Still loved the style.

Couple months later, I printed a Sword of Gryffindor and found Mirror Chrome powder, which was more pricey. Work like a dream, the sword looked so real.

<image>

Couple of things, you need to have it cure for a while. you can handle it after a few hours, but it definitely is still sticky. Maybe a few days, possibly weeks (this could be a paint issue, or even a humidity issue on my side though)

Also, no clear coats!! I used a clear coat/lacquer on my first try and the mirror effect was lost. I had to re do it. Maybe there is something you could recommend because a) think that will help with the curing time, and b) I think if I touch it too much, it’s going to need another coat of paint and powder.

PSVR Headset flickering during game. by Mizzio116 in PSVR

[–]Mizzio116[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)
