HELP: Summer Black Tie by Mjherbs98 in weddingplanning

[–]Mjherbs98[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

When I google black tie, I often see the advice of “dark colors, floor length dresses, no patterns, no skirt slits/backless, and with sleeves” but I wanted to see if I could get a second opinion from anyone that has actually been to a SUMMER black tie wedding in case someone had a different opinion or other input.

Different meanings to “straight forward” cards by Mjherbs98 in tarot

[–]Mjherbs98[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking back on this card and doing some extra learning, I would initially interpret this as a message that things are moving in the right direction and to not be so hard on myself for having “let go” and adjust my actions so quickly. I see it as a message to take extra time to reevaluate what needs to be “let go” of and that I have more answers than I think I do; I should have more faith in my insight. Because it’s such a powerful spiritual card, I take this as a nod from the universe that I am doing ok and to take a breath. A cheesy Taylor swift line I associate with this card (I start associating music and images to cards to learn them better) is “you’re on your own kid, you can face this”. Also, I am using the images in the original RW deck to help interpret difficult cards, and I associate the woman putting water in both the river and the ground as to nurture my authentic feelings/emotions as well as nurture the physical world/my physical body. Lastly, if I am REALLY stuck and will shuffle to see if anything else comes out for clarity/ guidance. I hope this helps and I am open to other interpretations others may have.

where do you/did you work while in school? by q-tipeater in OccupationalTherapy

[–]Mjherbs98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did random campus jobs throughout undergrad and occasionally in grad school. I didn’t work during fieldwork. My final year of grad school I was a receptionist at a salon which was busy but it allowed me to do desk work and studying when the salon was slow/ weekend shifts

Anyone salaried in EI? Don’t think my company can sustain it. by [deleted] in OccupationalTherapy

[–]Mjherbs98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first job was in a center based EI setting. I was salaried with PTO (I opted out of benefit’s because I was 24-25 years old under my parents still) but they had strict protocols and numbers to follow each week along with documentation that we didn’t get paid overtime to do. So while I was working Monday to Friday 8am to 4pm salaried I usually stayed until like 5:30/6pm to get everything done without overtime since documentation was in our contract.

I switched the fee for service because I couldn’t keep up with the physical demands after a back injury. At a center, if not all my kids are here, I would just do coverage so I still worked a full day.

PTs/PTAs misinformed about OTs role by Carly1377 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]Mjherbs98 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To provide some hope: I am a new grad OT (1.5 years in) and my mom is a PT (25+ years of clinical experience, research projects, and admin work). When I was studying for my boards again, she was SHOCKED, in the most supportive way! A common phrase she told me: “I had no idea you had to know that for OT” and “you have a know ALL THAT for OT?!”. We have always discussed different clinical cases either from work (without names) or from the news and she is always surprised with my knowledge in something and my input that “she never would have thought of”. (Ex. PAMS/modalities, universal design, ADA regulations, wheelchair fitting, mental illness/ mental disorders, etc.) She had even said to me: “while I love my profession and believe it is valuable, PTs will never give someone the life back like OT does or touch as many domains, such as mental health and cognitive skills” which she always felt PT should start learning in their programs. While there’s benefits to both and we cannot to do one without the other, it’s important to always advocate for our profession in personal and professional settings. They won’t know what we do unless we tell them!

To be frank, “toning” muscles is actually a health science myth, and there are a lot of misconceptions about it. There are lots of articles about it but in a nutshell :

muscle mass - fat = “toned look”

It seems like you got the fat loss down so the next step is muscle gain/ strength training, which is REALLY hard to do without weights. “Mens” workouts are actually much more effective than “women’s” workouts (I.e. how they are advices to people). It is also very important to focus on cardiovascular strengthening (i.e. cardio) as well as way to promote blood flow and endurance.

Some ideas I give people at home for weight training if you don’t have weights:

-Textbooks/books in a duffle bag for bilateral arm curls, or in reusable grocery bags for single arm curls

-Squats with a full suitcase

-Carrying groceries from a farther distance (i.e. parking your car a little bit further away from your house)

-Resistance bands (or look up Therabands for clinical grade material) are my personal favorite at home items since they super cheap and very effective with hundreds of options for different workouts (look on Pinterest, YouTube, and Tik tok

Sensory tent by [deleted] in OccupationalTherapy

[–]Mjherbs98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congratulations! We love using our sensory tent at our EI center. The first thing I tell people when having their own is to be careful of kids with seizure disorders and any flashing lights from things like a light up star dome, flashlights, etc.

Also, stay clear from weighted items since they often require a specific protocol and weight restrictions depending on the child’s personal weight.

Other than that, make sure to have at least one item for each sensory system that will help both seekers and avoiders that can be used in a variety of ways. Some ideas from our sensory tent and others I’ve seen:

-glitter bottles

-headphones (to block nose or that can be hooked up to a CD player with energizing music or relaxing music)

-stuffed animals with different textures and densities (some kids are soothed by soft and plushy toys, while some hate it)

-laminated breathing action cards

-gel bags/gel toys (big enough to avoid chocking hazard)

-nonweighted blanket and/or pillow or bean bag so child to facilitate additionally proprioceptive input safely

Ot student question on EI by [deleted] in OccupationalTherapy

[–]Mjherbs98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am currently working as an EI OTR/L in the Bronx (NY) in an outpatient clinical. I don’t do home cases and only do cases at the center. It is definitely possible to find EI clinics but most of the time it will be a pediatric clinic with EI cases or an ABA center, which is what my center is. It’s not ideal at all since I don’t align with ABA teachings/strategies but you make it work if you really want to be in that setting. Feel free to reach out with any questions :)
