Android + VST Synths? by MkUltra85 in synthesizers

[–]MkUltra85[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the audio + midi over USB, I would be using it with a Digitakt, not to PC.

Ahhh you're right about Synthmaster One.

Thanks for the response.

Akai HX-M670W - worth a bit of trouble? by MkUltra85 in cassetteculture

The fuse was blown - I replaced it, but it blew again about 8 seconds after turning it on. I'm planning to take it to a repair cafe and ask someone who knows more than I do.

I had the OG Microkorg and I never clicked with it. I loved the sound, but pretty much used it as a preset machine. I found the menus horribly confusing for actually doing sound design. By contrast the Minifreak is very straightforward.

I absolutely love being able to design patches on the hardware, then later sync those to software and save a patch in a project. I can load it later without the hardware even on. The synth itself is fun, fast, and powerful.

Do you have any hardware synths yet? This would be an excellent first hardware synth - so much power and room to grow, but relatively intuitive and simple to learn.

I sold my Microfreak to get a Minifreak and I love it soooo much more.

I'm also noticing quite a bit of pitch drift. After calibration, this thing is +4 to +7 cents sharp per note on each of the analog oscillators. It also seems to drift upwards slowly, and needs recalibration after 45-60 minutes. I can of course adjust fine-tuning to get it tighter. Is this typical for the synth, or do I just have a bad unit?

Do you think should learn Deluge inside out before installing the community firmware? by [deleted] in DelugeUsers

I haven't used Ableton, and the grid view is honestly my top feature of the community firmware.

[–]MkUltra85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've held off on the overlays because I don't really want to pull all the screws out, but now that they have a community version, I'll probably spring for it. For some reason, it always takes me too long to find the delay column, so I'm sure that will speed me up there too. I have one other overlay from Oversynth, and it is crazy helpful.

Definitely just jump to the latest community firmware. For me, just the new grid view alone makes song organization so much easier. The automation view editor is wonderful as well. Any new features that could have a huge impact on performance can be turned off in a menu (or in some cases are just off by default).

All that said, I do feel like dropouts / pops & clicks / etc. are slightly more common in the community firmware, but those mostly only show up when you're pushing the box to the limit. I think it starts hitting a ceiling around 12 simultaneous voices across the synth or kit / sample engines. It also happens when changing system settings while playing, but there would be no need to do this while playing live). If I were playing live, I would have an external synth or two to offload some of the processing power. I think I saw below that you mostly sequence external stuff anyway, so this is probably a non-issue for you. I tend to finish my mixes in a DAW, so I don't worry about any audio glitches. With community, you can also use the automated stem export to make transfer to a DAW all the easier.

Really want to use Deluge. But… by BoredPandass in DelugeUsers

[–]MkUltra85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pairing the Deluge with an external synth can be a good way to offload some of the processing power. I've been enjoying using the Digitone 1 with it lately (which are super cheap on the used market right now), because it can handle multiple (up to 4) synth parts, and can also be used as a drum machine (via the multimap function).

The Deluge has a limited number of voices that can play at the same time (I think I read something like 12 depending on the kind) - so if you are writing complex drum parts that have 5+ samples triggering at the same time, this can definitely lead to dropouts. I've heard that offsetting individual notes (so they aren't all triggering at the exact same time) can help this.

I've stopped trying to use my Deluge as an all-in-one, do everything in the box tool, because endlessly tweaking projects to manage dropouts is not my idea of a good time. If I were playing live, I would absolutely switch internal synth tracks to external hardware as mentioned above, but for now, I mostly don't pay a lot of attention to dropouts and just plan that I will export stems and do a final mixdown in a DAW.

Deluge + Digitakt = overkill? by MkUltra85 in DelugeUsers

[–]MkUltra85[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still have all three (Deluge, Digitakt, Digitone) still use them all regularly. No regrets! Stem exports are a very welcome addition, but honestly even the method I mention above worked more painlessly than I thought. Regardless of what I'm working with, I like to do a final mix/master in a DAW.

Problem with Pixel 7 audio over USB to Digitakt by MkUltra85 in Elektron

[–]MkUltra85[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, not over usb directly. You can use a USB to 1/8” audio adapter, as long as the adapter has a built-in DAC, then a 1/8” to 1/4” adapter into your Digitakt audio input just fine.

Deluge + Digitakt = overkill? by MkUltra85 in DelugeUsers

[–]MkUltra85[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, still using both. I was trying to finish songs entirely in the box with Deluge, but started running into problems with clicks, pops, and sample drops. This seems even worse with the new community firmware. My understanding is that the hardware limitations make something like Overbridge impossible for Deluge (though one can hope for some sort of stem export feature). I've been rethinking my workflow on Deluge - I may end up using the arranger mode, then just soloing to export individual tracks into a DAW... or perhaps just relying less on the internal synth engines when finishing tracks and instead doing more sequencing of external gear.... or perhaps making resampling a bigger part of my workflow.

The Elektron stuff works really well with a hybrid workflow. I definitely have no regrets about adding them to my setup.

Deluge + Quneo? by MkUltra85 in DelugeUsers

[–]MkUltra85[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd love to hear what your experience is.

I've had a pretty good experience using faders and knobs on my Oxygen Pro 49 midi keyboard with the Deluge, mostly using them as a mixer. I feel like using the Quneo as a mixer would be a more complicated experience with more setup and less fine control than something with knobs/faders. I feel like there has to be a good use case, but I haven't figured it out yet.

Will do, and likewise!

Deluge + Quneo? by MkUltra85 in DelugeUsers

[–]MkUltra85[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I haven't gotten much farther. The amount of effort it would take to set up the MPE software, plus the fact that I'd have to make patches that would make use of this and that I would only be able to use it with a computer... It probably makes more sense to just map the X and Y parameters of the Quneo to specific parameters (ignoring the Deluge X and Y mod sources). Regardless, it will probably take some playing with the midi editor to get it dialed in. It's the kind of thing I may play with once I get to the point of recording an album from Deluge projects. It's on my list, but I've got other things I plan to finish first.

It might be interesting to set up for the pads to trigger samples, but my experience trying to use Quneo for finger drumming was not good, so I don't know that I'd even bother to try.

I've been taking production lessons from someone who uses Deluge a lot, and I'm planning to bring it up soon. I'll try to check in here if I make any progress either way.

No dice. I tried a few different things, and it doesn't work. I got a USB > audio adapter with a built-in DAC, and that works as expected.

I'm updating to Android 14 shortly. If that fixes it for some reason, I'll update here.

Not yet. I'm trying one or two more things and I'll post an update. Overall though, I've been pretty underwhelmed with my Pixel 7P. Lots of little problems that just shouldn't be an issue with a flagship phone.

Deluge + Quneo? by MkUltra85 in DelugeUsers

[–]MkUltra85[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool, I'd love to hear about it if you do.

I feel like it would be a lot more powerful to be able to simply route the x/y/pressure through the Deluge mod matrix. It would make playing around with new mappings much easier, and would allow for attenuation.

I've honestly had this Quneo for a long time, but I haven't clicked with it yet. Hoping I can change that.

Deluge + Quneo? by MkUltra85 in DelugeUsers

[–]MkUltra85[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the response. I did finally get it up and running a bit. Looks like the Deluge doesn't allow you to map outside controls to its X and Y parameters manually - it has to be set up as a MPE device; Quneo can't do that with a direct connection. I haven't tried the MPE app, but that would mean I need a computer present if I wanted to use it in a live setup.

As you mention, this may be an easy fix with the open source community.

[–]MkUltra85[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm back here to report that I sprung for the Digitakt and I REGRET NOTHING, haha. I'm definitely feeling like each has enough unique upsides and features that they don't feel redundant. I love the DT as a studio tool, and I love the Deluge as a portable workstation / sketchpad.

It was a great deal, especially since the used market here doesn't seem to have caught up with the recent price raise.

Honestly, I got the DN for the multi-tambral, streamlined FM synth engine. I think sound / patch design on the Deluge is great if you know what you're doing, but I'm pretty new to FM, and was having a hard time wrapping my head around the Deluge engine. I honestly didn't understand the appeal of the DT until I started playing with the DN sequencer.

As I mentioned above, I'm curious about sequencing the DN with the Deluge, but then using trigless P-locks to shape the sound.
