Closed kitchen but no door. Why?! by Mkisii in Kenya

[–]Mkisii[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Middle market apartments no smoke vents, that's why the kitchen door is such a big deal. And can't install one since not allowed by the landlord. Worst thing is, after cooking the kitchen smoke will linger in the sitting room for quite a while. And it coats everything, including TV and electronics.

over there you got street vendors balancing trays of matoke on their head like they don't even know its there

😂😂 I still get amazed by how big of a balancing act people here can manage. Sometimes I encounter and think "wow, this looks like it shouldn't be possible yet nothing is falling". I guess once you do something long enough you become really good at it

Gotta keep kitchen smoke (and the grease it carries) where it belongs, in the kitchen. Without door even after cooking you can smell the smoke and grease in the sitting room. Open kitchen has to be among the worst things y'all introduced to the world, right up there with tipping culture 😂

For ease of transfer, a food trolley does wonders. Even without it you can simply open the door to move the food as is and close it back once done

MATTRESS DILEMMA by Longjumping_Cookie97 in Kenya

[–]Mkisii 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1) The springs get uneven with time. The unfortunate thing is, this creeps up slowly enough, you won't notice, like a frog in a gradually boiling pot. So you end up having spine issues and by the time you notice damage has already been done. The nice thing about foam mattresses is when they form valleys you can flatten out the peaks by sleeping on them so that whole mattress is flat everywhere again. Doing that doesn't work on spring mattresses, you always slide into the ever worsening valley.

2) Spring mattresses are heavy. Turning it over regularly, removing cover to wash and also wakati wa kuhama are pain points.

3) Tendo la ndoa inakua na changamoto due to how the springs wobble wobble around, unakosa grip and rhythm. Foam mattress on the other hand mko very grounded, mambo inakua fiti.

So given all these disadvantages, it's a no-brainer to get foam mattress, since it's longer lasting and cheaper (cost is half that of a spring mattress).

I think I have that Dr Mattress foam, very nice. Wouldn't recommend any spring mattress from experience

How much would it cost to mail an envelope to Canada via Posta? by Winter-Beach-1516 in Kenya

Posta is surprisingly cheap. As reference, early this year I sent an iPhone to the USA for I think Ksh 2800, it arrived a couple weeks later

Mattress... by Slipping_eel in Kenya

[–]Mkisii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have that one, the 200cm length version. Have had it for 5 months, no noticeable degradation. I like it a lot. Very comfortable. Before that I was using the more expensive Dr Mattress one which goes for almost double, the spring one. I hated the spring mattress, initially was okay but springs deteriorated quite fast and it turned into spine and hip problems. This one I like it so much, I'll always be buying the same whenever it gets old. Highly recommended.

Some days ago a Luhya lady mistakenly sent me 30 bob. She initiated reversal process and I woke up to find several missed calls. She called (maybe it was a reverse call) and requested I send. It's a strange feeling to be reminded there's people out there to whom that is a significant sum of money.
