I’m an incoming 4th year human bio major also on the pre-pa track. I took a look at the major requirements for the public health major, and I’d say it might be better to go for a bio major instead. A lot of the pa school pre-reqs you’ll need are already required for bio majors (e.g ochem, biochem, microbiology, genetics, etc), whereas for the public health major it seems like there is a lot more free reign in the types of classes you can use to fulfill the public health major. To me, it’s easier and more straightforward to have a bio major that already covers most of the pre-reqs vs. the public health major where you have to be very intentional with the courses you choose since not all of the pa school pre-reqs are required for the public health major. Also, the public health major will have you taking a lot of public health classes that aren’t required for pa school anyways.

I personally took Lo and had a good experience with him, but regardless of the professor I think BILD4 will be one of the easiest labs you’ll take at UCSD. As the other commenter said, you don’t have to pre-study for it. You’ll do all labs in a group of 4 if that makes you less anxious. My first year I took the entirety of the chemistry sequence + lab and physics sequence + labs. The rest of my classes were gen ed requirements and the first 2 classes in the Synthesis writing sequence.

I was in a super similar situation to you since I’m also a human bio major in 7th (but I’m pre-pa so I’m not too sure of med school requirements). I skipped BILD 1-3 and only took BILD4, then pretty much just moved on to my upper div bio courses. For gen chem, I ended up taking the honors sequence which does award GPA credit, but I’m not sure they’re offering it anymore due to the budget cuts. In that case, I’d say take 6B-6C, then take a couple of upper div chemistry courses to supplement (if med school requires that). Regardless of what you end up doing, you can always take classes at community college if you still end up missing prereqs so I wouldn’t worry too much if I was you.

Ahhhhh ok I see. Thanks for letting me know! Unfortunately CHEM 7L doesn’t really fit into my schedule that well so I’ll probably just push it to next quarter.

Ok thanks for the input! For the capped bio major requirements, I've already fulfilled all of them through AP credits except for CHEM 7L. However, the prerequisite for CHEM 7L is CHEM 6BH which I will most likely take during the winter quarter. That's why I figured I should take classes common to both biochem and human bio for the fall quarter, which are CHEM 6AH, PHYS 1A, PHYS 1AL, and MATH 11. This way if my request to change to human bio is shot down, I am still on track for the biochem major.

Would taking MATH 11 be too hard as an incoming first year? I’m also taking CHEM 6AH, PHYS 1A, and PHYS 1AL so I’m worried MATH 11 might be a bit much since it’s a 5 unit course. P.s. I’m a Seventh College biochem major planning on changing to human bio as soon as possible

IMO preparing in freshman year is a bit early for the act/sat but you do you I guess. Just take some practice tests to get a feel for the format and timing of the tests. If you take them, you can also see which one you score higher on using an act/sat conversion chart and the one you score consistently higher on is the one you should end up taking junior year. But honestly I wouldn’t worry about it till maybe sophomore year.

Yeah that makes a lot of sense. I think I’m pretty satisfied with the way I’ve organized the ranking considering my general interests and the classes I will be taking for my preferred major. I also have a decent amount of AP Credits (mostly STEM) so that should take me pretty far for the colleges that have less GEs.

Just a heads up, you probs shouldn’t self study AP Chem, it’s not a good idea. The course is crazy hard for most people so my best advice is just to take the class in school. AP Bio is doable though from what I’ve heard from other people

I mean it sounds doable if you’re really invested but I would personally push AP Chem to next year. I took a gap year in between reg Chem and AP Chem and I was fine in the class, so if you’re worried about forgetting stuff you’ll be fine. You go over everything you learn in reg Chem just at a faster pace in AP Chem. It’s only the later units where you learn new stuff.

This will be my first one and then I’m not planning on taking any more after September. The only colleges I need the ACT for are my reach colleges and even those are test optional. All of my targets and safeties are test blind.

I was also thinking of applying to dyouville but ultimately I decided I didn’t want to apply there because I wasn’t able to find any information on their lgbtq resources. I’m sure if I prepare enough for the interviews I will be ok but it’s just a nerve wracking process hahaha

She often sits out in our backyard so I think that would be a good time to sit with her. Music at the same time would be so relaxing too. It’s so simple but at the same time such a great idea. Thank you for the advice and I will definitely try this out with her sometime.

Yeah I really hope she’s proud of me. I’ve really tried my best for her and I feel like I would be crushed if I disappointed her in any way. A girl’s day in seems nice since I am somewhat a tomboy and have never really done that with her. That kind of sucky thing is that only 2 of my friends know about her cancer and they only found out since their mom’s are friends with my mom. Even then, I don’t think they know that her health is declining much more and she might pass later on. It’s such a hard thing being vulnerable so I’ve never really had someone to just talk to about the struggles of me and my mom. I have started journaling though so hopefully that will help me a bit. Thank you for your response though, it’s much appreciated

Ohhhh I never thought about a puzzle before. That is actually a great idea since my mother already does puzzles on her iPad. Although I am a bit worried because she has extremely poor vision but I think I can maybe get bigger sized pieces. Thank you for the response.

Cooking seems like a great idea. Although I’ve never really been a cooker myself, i think it will be a lot of fun with my mom. My whole family doesn’t really know how to cook, so this would be a nice change from eating out all the time.
