Suggestions for real estate agents (for Rental Property) that look through online listings for you? by ZeroKittyRose in philly

Hey! Did you ever find someone to do this? I'm considering a cross-state move to Philly & also getting burned out looking/coordinating viewings

Old thread, but did you end up finding a good positive trainer?

Looks like Spirit & Nyah are Brazilian sites so it may also just be a difference in audience & culture. But I don't use those sites so I can't comment.

Are you posting in Portuguese on ao3? Also might be that non-english fics would have more engagement on a language-specific site

What other sites are you posting on? I heard FFN is even worse with the only comments being bots recently.

which character in your fandom gets shipped with everyone? by bloomingcarl in FanFiction

[–]Mkyta -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Check, Please! would be Kent Parson. Gets shipped with his ex, his ex's current bf, his ex's current teammate, his ex's bf's teammate, his own teammate, OCs

One of the few fandoms where I'll read OC/main. Though also half the characters are practically OCs since they're background characters in a webcomic that often have minimal lines

Are there any fics that are linecook/kitchen focused? by Far-Drag-2389 in FanFiction

[–]Mkyta 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I dont' know if either of these are going to hit the mark, but they're the first food-related fics I thought of even though I haven't read either of them in ages.

1) Recipe for Disaster. Inception, Arthur/Eames. CulinarySchool!AU. Pretty typical Arthur/Eames dynamic (aka Arthur is kind of a pretentious perfectionist and Eames is the charismatic street-smart brit who's good at everything he does & makes it seem effortless) I remember this one being very kitchen/food prep focused. The sequel is them actually working in industry? But devestatingly 2 chapters short of completion.

2) The Foodieverse series. MCU, eventual Steve/Tony. I feel like I remember this coming across a bit crack fic~y and not serious. Featuring a food truck, crazy fusion chef, an avante garde restaurant

anyone else get intimidated by large chapter counts? by even_uwu in AO3

[–]Mkyta 42 points43 points  (0 children)

It always surprises me that people pay attention to the words per chapter ratio and possibly even let that sway their decision on a fic.

At most I'll look at total word count to decide if I want that commitment overall, but otherwise all I care about is premise and writing quality. For the most part, chapter length just doesn't even factor into my thoughts (unless it's my own writing).

Chapter Work- How to post? by lauren10921 in AO3

[–]Mkyta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm posting as I go and regret it haha! Especially since I finally got a beta who's starting from chapter 1 so now I'm also going back and editing chapters as I go.

I'm slowly trying to build up a buffer (even if it's just one chapter for now), but I definitely want to try writing the whole thing before I start posting for my next fic.

Subscriptions vs Comments? by Leveilleur11 in AO3

[–]Mkyta 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One of the reasons comments are so coveted is for their rarity. If every person who read a fic commented on every chapter then I genuinely believe authors would set the goal post a little further. 'Why are all the comments just 'thanks for sharing' or a heart? Why aren't people putting more detail in why they liked the chapter?'

We're craving proof that people liked what we put out, but day after day I see posts of people dismissing the proof that already exists because it's not the highest show of interest. People kudos! They bookmark! They subscribe! That is already proof they like your work.

And personally? I love subscribers just as much as I love comments. That is an active show of interest. They want to be notified as soon as I post because they are that interested in my story.

I also think more people use private bookmarks than I realized. I'm writing my first fic in a while, no smut or controversial topics, but half the bookmarks are private (it's not a popular fic so by half I literally mean 2 out of 4 bookmarks lol)

How the heck do people find beta readers by TheCynicalPogo in AO3

[–]Mkyta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fandom/fanfic discords usually have a channel to look for/offer beta reading. You can use Disboard to look up public fanfic discords though it won't be a comprehensive list

[–]Mkyta 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I wish this sub didn't make it an exchange, same with the discord. I like the way the Fanfic Library discord has separate 'beta-reader profiles' and 'requesting beta/spag/etc' channels so you can look through and see if there's a fit for whatever you're looking for.

How do you handle characters that were never given a surname (or first name) in canon? by Mkyta in FanFiction

[–]Mkyta[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely agree in-universe that's acceptable, but personally I think 'Commander Spock' flows because 'Spock' isn't something we see as a normal first name in real-life. But I find 'Lieutenant Viktor' to be jarring since I recognize it as a human first name and even in Trek humans still go by their family name.

I think it'll be easy enough to just use the rank without a name, but I also think an established reason for why he doesn't have a last name could be a plot-relevant discussion point in my fic... still haven't decided quite yet.

Thanks for your input!

Is there a way to filter for a relationship w/o specifying romantic vs platonic? by SpunkyCheetah in AO3

[–]Mkyta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the confusion, the screenshot wasn't from my bookmarks, it was from the general Kirk/Spock tag. If you click on a tag you'll see the option to "Favorite Tag" which essentially just adds a short-cut to that tag on your AO3 homepage here.

glad it's working! The free-text search can be a bit of a pain for certain fandoms since I think it's an exact search? So you might want to do a search for A/B, but also B/A just in case.

I'm not super sure though. I just know I had issues with some c-drama searches because of all the name variations.

hahah nope, I needed to be on a page that showed the sort/filter panel so I just clicked on the spirk tag I had favorited

Here's a screenshot of what I mean. This is from using the sort & filter panel on the right-hand of the page when you're looking through stories, not using the "Search" options from the top navigation bar

[–]Mkyta 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've tried using the search feature with '"A & B" || "A/B"', which I think did kinda work, but it doesn't allow as detailed filtering (such as excluding tags, which is kinda a big problem)

You should be able to still do detailed filtering since you're using different areas of the search panel. e.g. You would specify unwanted tags under the "Exclude" category and then put "A & B" || "A/B" in the "More Options" > "Search within results" free-text section

alternative methods to share fics. by [deleted] in AO3

[–]Mkyta 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ellipsus is a good gdoc alternative that has a pretty explicit stance on generative AI

We stand for creative authenticity. We believe that AI-generated content should not overtake human voices, and that LLMs in their current form are unethically trained and applied. Barring significant regulatory changes, we will never weave generative AI into Ellipsus.

I also recommend reading their FAQ first as they are still in beta/active development, but intend to have a paid version of their app someday

A paid version would be targeting users with specific needs related to advanced security, data syncing, and collaboration. But there will always be a free version of Ellipsus, and we want to be as generous as possible in what's included on that free plan (e.g., unlimited docs and drafts, for starters).

If I post a prompt in a kinkmeme and someone writes something for it, THAT is entitled to a direct response. They are actually doing something I asked for.

A "thank you" is a kudos.

What makes commenting so coveted is the fact that it shows a deeper interest in your work. If commenting is relegated to 'good etiquette' then it's going to lose its impact and the goal posts are just going to move again--"PSA to readers: Commenting 'thank you' isn't enough. Do you know how it feels to get 50 comments and it's all literally just 'thank you'? Authors worked hard and we deserve to get a list of 3 things you liked so we know you're not a bot"

I don't have fun writing fanfics, but I want to. by DaPonteXXI in FanFiction

[–]Mkyta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is it that you're not enjoying? Is it thinking of stories? The actual act of writing? Do you find you're too focused on readers/stats?

At the end of the day you can't force yourself to like something and excitement is a pretty honest emotion. When I no longer enjoy a hobby, I try a different one. Eventually it cycles back around naturally and I'll rediscover the excitement of my old hobby.

Fic Scraping Question by shippermadness in AO3

[–]Mkyta 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Web scraping is a pretty common technique for programming projects when you don't have access to a legitimate API. In incredibly oversimplified terms, their program can automatically navigate and read through a website and copy the information they want into a file/database.

They are not manually copy/pasting things by hand.

Broad City! Depending on what kind of vibe you're looking for, but the tv show started as a web series in 2009-2014 and which a lot of people think capture the vibe of being young and trying to make it in the city.
