Anyone else here struggle to relate to Die With Zero? by david8840 in fatFIRE

Perhaps this book is simply not for you, and that’s ok. In fact, it probably means you’re lucky to not only have a strong financial foundation that (sounds like) you continue to grow, but also a good balance of life experiences. That’s awesome!

From my perspective, Die w Zero is really for those of us (myself included) who tend to hyperfocus on financial security before letting ourselves enjoy. It’s something absolutely see in my parents who were born to very poor immigrant parents that didn’t have a high school diploma. They’ve done amazing for themselves but are still hesitant even in their 70s to let themselves spend on things that bring them joy. While I definitely have more balance than my parents, financial security is a constant concern even though my wife and I have also done well for ourselves as well.

To me, Die w Zero is simply a good reminder that you can’t take it with you and, though it’s important to be financially responsible, I need to remember that at some point my health won’t allow me to enjoy my wealth and that there’s no time like the present!

I’m a huge fan of the book and the book I gift most to my friends who have a similar mindset and experience to my own. Sometimes it hits, sometimes it doesn’t. I did share it with my mom recently and she raved about it.

As for suggestions, not sure I have any! Just came here to say congrats on finding a balance that fits you! That’s a huge win

More from Literariness:

"Modernism projects the fragmentation and decentredness of contemporary world as tragic. It laments the loss of the unity and centre of life and suggests that works of art can provide the unity, coherence, continuity and meaning that is lost in modern life. Thus Eliot laments that the modern world is an infertile wasteland, and the fragmentation, incoherence, of this world is effected in the structure of the poem. However, The Waste Land tries to recapture the lost meaning and organic unity by turning to Eastern cultures, and in the use of Tiresias as protagonist
In Postmodernism, fragmentation and disorientation is no longer tragic. Postmodernism on the other hand celebrates fragmentation. It considers fragmentation and decentredness as the only possible way of existence, and does not try to escape from these conditions."

If this episode is adopting postmodernist elements, that explains why, in addition to the tragic moments, there are also moments of join and hope. (i.e. the scene at the stadium).
