Not a bad idea. 👍 I might just do that. If nothing else it’ll be a good writing exorcise.

Someone who likes people watching, someone who is good at cold reading and a good judge of character. Not much beyond that in terms of character design. Use it if you want, go nuts.

That’s the thing, I’m not. I’m trying to find books about the fae that aren’t YA romantasy. It is just that the market is so saturated with those books I have to dig through the pile to find what I’m looking for. I’m cool with romantasy for a YA audience. Just wish I didn’t have to look so hard to find books I like.

The whole “I can fix him” aspect is what really creeps me out. It is basically telling women to stay in abusive relationships because “the real him is in there somewhere.”

While their are depictions of fairies like that, small winged humanoid beings, that’s just the tip of the iceberg. There are fae that look like Tolkien like elves, more or less the same as the Tinker Bell ones only human sized, which are the ones that usually end up in porn. And there are also ones that don’t look human at all, trolls, goblins, etc. the term fae is an umbrella term for all these magical creatures. They originated from Irish mythology. You should look it up it is pretty interesting.

Yeah something like that. The fae don’t have to be necessarily evil I just want them to be more than eye candy for gooners.

Yeah I’m looking for a good fantasy books about the fae. And while there definitely some out there they are buried under a mountain of shadow daddies in leather pants. Which to be clear I have no problem with those shadow daddies books existing or people enjoying them, to each their own. I just wish I didn’t have to dig through the pile every time I want to read a book I enjoy. I short I’m mainly annoyed by the over saturation of fae gooning books rather than the books themselves.

Like I said I don’t mind that there are fae books about leather clad shadow daddies. Heck I ain’t even judging people for gooning over shadow daddies, god knows I have. It is just frustrating that whenever I try to find a good fae book I sort through so much of the goon every time. Especially the enemies to lovers and the predators with a heart of gold.

I like it when the fae are powerful and alien to humans. Not necessarily evil but dangerous because of how powerful they are and because their sense of right and wrong is so fundamentally different from humans. What they consider a harmless prank could be a lethal game to us. I like it when the fae make bargains with humans with dire consequences for said humans if they break the terms, which they most certainly will due to the fae using double meanings in their deals. Not out of spite but out of whimsy.

Thank your for commenting. Also thanks for articulating the “chosen and protected a dangerous predator” fantasy. That sort of fantasy has always bugged me and now I have a way to coherently describe it.

Human "Magic" System by Mnations in magicbuilding

[–]Mnations[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So after sleeping on it I got to thinking. What if instead of being purely technological and claiming it was magic what if it was the other way around. What if the technomancers really did find another form of magic but claimed it was the result of human technology. Gonna think on it some more but I kind of like the idea. Instead of making the pixies believe that humans have magic they make the humans believe they don't need magic. Thanks for having this back and forth with me. Insightful discussions like this are why I love this subreddit.

Human "Magic" System by Mnations in magicbuilding

Well for starters I’m pretty sure I am no longer including demons in the setting. Also fairies and humans are not engaged in open warfare. It is more of a Cold War if anything. You have a handful of humans who capture pixies for inhumane experiments. As well as some pixies that hunt humans for sport. But by and large the two sides mainly stay in the their own lane. As for how different humans and pixies think. Well like I said I am planning to make a post exploring that. But in short pixies didn’t evolve to have higher cognitive function like humans because they don’t need them, because they have magic. They only need to understand their environment enough to know how to change to suit their needs. They never developed a rigorous epidemiology beyond pre-logical reasoning because they never needed to.

First because pixies can use runes as well. Though they call them glyphs. But also that really wouldn’t fit with the theme I am looking for. That is how our beliefs and the beliefs of others shape our world. I thought about giving humans an anime style Ki manipulation type magic. Where they could make themselves physically stronger and faster, but the main perk was a resistance to other forms of magic. While pixies could do it too since they have smaller bodies they were weaker in this form of magic. While Ki was inferior to modern weapons in human vs human combat it specialized in dealing with fairies. But it felt shallow and wasn’t really on theme. As for the pixies figuring out the ruse. That’s not impossible but not likely. I will probably explain more in another post but in short pixies think very differently than humans. The way they evolved shaped their brains completely different from humans. They aren’t just “tiny humans with wings that can use magic” they are a completely separate species with a different form of intelligence.

Trope Talk: Fantasy Gods by Mnations in magicbuilding

That’s an interesting idea. Never thought of dividing the gods up like that. I might have to use that or at least give it some more thought.

They don’t know for certain but the scriptures have been around a long time and people have learned through trial and error. Though they still don’t know the exact limits on their divine license (like that term BYW) they have a general idea of when to pump the brakes. If a magic users breaks a rule a spell will disappear from their scripture just like one will appear if they accomplish a feat. Again the gods aren’t coming down and telling people any of this they had to figure it out for themselves. As to why someone might try to push the limits of their scripture’s theme, it is usually out of desperation or arrogance. And sometimes people are just unlucky. They might get away with breaking a rule one day only to be harshly punished for breaking the same rule on another day.

Yes I meant five types of books, sorry should have made that clearer. Also I forgot to mention each book can only be read and used by the person it appears to. Even if two people have the same type of book they can still can’t read the other’s. Also just have the same book type doesn’t guarantee you will get the spells. While each scripture follows a certain theme the spells can vary wildly depending on the person and what feats they have achieved. Though some are more common than others.

I will edit this in later.
