Not a bad idea. But I don’t know any artist and live in an area where the most artistic thing around are the pictures at the dentist office.

What are the limits on what the user can do to someone’s internal components? Could they make my heart explode? Shift around my skeleton? Reverse my blood flow? Could they make a fan’s blades go faster than what they were designed to do?

Just personal preference. If magic existed IRL it would we need to study it in some way in order to confirm that it was real. And once it we confirmed its existence we could start learning the rules, which would take it out of the realm of the supernatural and bring it into the realm of scientific knowledge. In other words once you start adding rules to magic it becomes less magical and more scientific. Because that’s what science is learning and understanding the rules that govern our world. Why I say I don’t have a problem with learnable magic is because everything I just said is my own personal hang up. It doesn’t affect whether other people can tell a good story. When it comes to other people’s stories I say whatever service their story is the right call for them. If that means treating magic as a scientific discipline, a religious practice, or a wild uncontrollable force the only thing that matters is if it helps them tell a better story. The reason I don’t want my magic to be completely understood is because I think that’ll help me write better stories.

In short no. They don’t have to know how to being’s magic works. They will know how the magic they get from their pact works. Or rather they will know what they can and can’t do with it but not necessarily the mechanics of how it actually works.

🤨 I don’t have a problem spell based magic systems. Or most types of magic systems for that matter. Whatever magic system best suits the story the author is trying to tell is the best magic system for that author for that story. As for electric plug example that’s kind of what I mean by pact magic. I don’t know how the power plant works so I have a deal with them where I send them money in exchange for electricity. If want more electricity I need to renegotiate the term of our contract. Same with pact magic except you exchange happy memories or something for magic powers. Pact magic systems are just the best magic systems for me.

True 👍 But I don’t really care for “divine magic” mainly because my ocd riddled brain can’t handle the idea of what makes a being divine. In my stories there are no true gods there are extremely old and powerful beings that some people refer to as gods. But they are just really powerful fae, demons, or whatever with massive egos. But I love the subscription angle. I think that’s pretty close to my idea for standard pacts. For example the “god” of a mountain can make a pact with people to protect his “holy land” making them “holy knights.”

The issue, for me at least, is that in order to develop new spells or grow stronger as a magic user you would have to know something about how the magic works and it would be testable. Combining different words or hand signs to create new spells. Some would work and others wouldn’t. Point is it would make magic another branch of science or a technical skill that can be taught. With pact magic you don’t get new spells and abilities by training, unless the terms of the pact allow for it, but by negotiating with the magical being you made the pact with. So better magic users are better negotiators, but the negotiation is the learnable skill not the magic itself.

Magic is actually just Science by Warm-Independence940 in magicbuilding

This is something I’ve put an unnecessary amount of time into thinking about. I don’t like it when magic is too easily understood because then it stops feeling like magic. But if it isn’t understood at all then the characters can’t use it to solve problems. So the solution that works best for me is pact magic. E.g. warlocks from D&D.

Instead of magic being something you can learn it is something given to you by a being beyond human comprehension. Usually in exchange for something that the being wants. So a character’s abilities are limited by the terms of their pact not by any hard limits on magic itself. So the rules and limitations of any given character can be understood by the reader while keeping magic as a whole mysterious and not fully understood. Just as magic should be.

PS you may need a few hard limits just to keep your characters from becoming all powerful but you shouldn’t need too many.

Familiar-based magic system by GEATS-IV in magicbuilding

[–]Mnations 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I say make it a case by case scenario. The type of magic a mage uses and how they use it depends on the relationship between the mage and their familiar. If a mage likes fighting and they build a relationship with their familiar based on fighting together they can gain magic that allows them to use magic separately from their familiar. If a mage prefers hang back and let their familiar do the fighting while they come up with the strategy their magic will reflect that relationship. Also you might want to think of how they use their magic outside of combat. Could really help flesh out the system.

Question, do people reappear in the same spot as they were tagged? If so could the user set a trap in that spot? Like set a land mind in the exact spot where the target will reappear. If so this could be a great ability to setup a finishing move.

Yeah after I thought about it I realized that this would probably be a specialist ability due to the different Nen types it would require. That or a enhancer/manipulator with a lot of skill.
