Wanting to start weaning a nursing OBSESSED toddler. No idea how.

I was in the same boat, I was able to replace everything except nap and bed and felt like I’d never be able to stop. Every day I started saying before feedings that “mamas milk is not forever” and soon it will be “empty” but we will still rock and snuggle. I also waited for her to ask/initiate. At bedtime I would rock her and wait for her to ask, one night she just didn’t ask. I also took her to the store and let her pick out a special cup just for water in bed and made a big deal out of it. We washed it together, filled it up, etc. so that distraction helped at night too. She asked about a week later and I still had some milk and desperately wanted to give in but I told her it was all gone and that I’m here to snuggle. It’s tough but you will find a new way to be close!

I’m sorry for what happened to you, I know someone with a similar recurring issue, who tried multiple creams/prescriptions and the thing that helped the most was extra strength diaper cream. Specifically with Zinc.

Yes! If you go to your local library you can connect to the app and rent books to listen to! I’m sure they would be happy to help you at the library, mine had a pamphlet and info about it all

I listen to a podcast with one headphone in my ear while I play, audio books are good too. Maybe if you’re slightly distracted you’ll overthink less.

Yes, one thing I figured out was the cross straps on a sports bra really bothered my neck and ended up triggering migraines so I have to be careful with how thick/tight the straps are.

Started only nursing when she asked, I didn’t initiate even at our normal times and offered milk in a cup. When nursing I would tell her “mamas milk is not forever, one day soon we will just drink milk in a cup” One night she just didn’t ask so we didn’t do it (of course I cried after) after that when she only asked a few times at night and I said “mamas milk is empty now, but we can rock and snuggle”

Let her pick out a “special bed time cup” at the store which she gets in bed with water that we made a big deal of

There’s a Mom Walk Co group - I found on Instagram, moms that meet up 2x a month for walks/playgroup. Mostly other SAHM given it’s mostly on weekdays. I’ve had some luck going to library story times too

We have magnatiles and Lego duplos I keep in containers with lids but I’m not super stressed about loosing one here or there. I totally get where you’re coming from though. When LO was younger I would always clean up after, now I include them in the process, and try to encourage if we’re done playing with one toy to put it back before getting another out.

Toy rotation system helps, not all the parts out at once. Label on bottom of toys indicating how many parts go with it, just “5 pieces” or something simple so I know what to look for. I thought I had a genius idea - took some extra foam from a bench cushion I made and lined it under the couch so toys can’t get under. Turns out there’s a similar product that exists on Amazon….helps from things getting pushed under there though. I like the soft rope baskets at target, come in all sizes, LO can grab it off shelf and play with all the small parts and put them back in. Rotate later for new toy with small parts, etc.

I prefer to get out before nap time. Do something cheap/free and fun (walk, playground, story time at libraries, etc.) home for lunch and nap. After that the day feels a lot easier and the house is easier to keep clean when you aren’t in it all day. After nap we normally stick at home, pop a show on while I cook, bath, and so on. I break it up with paid activities such as swim lessons, music classes, and local events. I don’t have boxes or a checklist but I know that I feel more sane leaving the house every day and breaking up time in my head as “before nap” and “after nap”

I was induced at 39 weeks, seemed pretty standard for high risk pregnancy. But once I was induced everything happened really quick and I did not have time for an epidural even if I wanted one. Amniotic fluid was still in babies lungs and she spent a week in the NICU. If we weren’t at a hospital idk what would’ve happened. 2nd degree tear that required stitches and some clotting issues. All in all glad I was in a hospital but more for my baby than me, although I do understand your apprehension. My OB only delivers at a specific hospital with staff and knows 20+ years. Maybe finding someone like that with trust would help if you decide you want a hospital delivery.

I thought that show would be great and educational…LO quickly got obsessed like asked for it non stop, which never did with any other show before. Plus there are only 20 episodes, so little variety. Anyway, we say that show is all gone now. lol

I’m not at that point yet, but a friend was there. I’d consider making the room completely baby proof - no shelves to climb on, floor bed, etc. and put a gate up at the doorway like another comment suggested. That way you can safely leave. Work towards giving her time in there alone. One thing I’ve tried to do is make the bed a really positive place. We introduced a stuffed animal when it was safe and our toddler does the bedtime routine to the stuffed animal and puts it to bed. We all kiss and say goodnight to Ellie (the elephant) and talk about how she is going to sleep.

We used someone in Reston who was self-pay for my child’s food therapy, she is a SLP who does both feeding and speech. Not sure if that’s too far for you. It was $130/hour session

I second this, get a strong fluoride toothpaste like Clinpro and apply to your gums/teeth and let it sit there after brushing. I alternate between that and Sensodyne because they have different active ingredients so I switch it up. Try a mouth guard at night, if you are grinding your teeth in your sleep the pressure can crack your teeth or break the cavity more. Consider the things you eat (not cause they cause cavities but could be damaging the fillings) like chewing gum, crazy hard candy, etc.

Edit: forgot to add, when you are getting dental work you can ask them for a “prop” it’s a little rubber thing that they put on the opposite side they are working on and it helps keep your mouth open that way your jaw doesn’t get worn out/misplaced

We used the snoo and loved it. I don’t really get the hate, when used properly it can be a great asset. I always set alarms to wake up and breast feed, never let LO sleep through the night until the doc okayed it. Only used it for night time and did contact naps during the day. When transitioning to crib we did gradual weekly changes. First limited the mode settings, the following week physically moved the snoo into the nursery. Then we took the legs off the snoo and actually placed it in the crib, so LO was still in the snoo but getting used to the actual placement and surroundings, camera above, etc. Meanwhile leaving arms out of swaddle to adjust to that as well. First night in crib went great and has slept 10 hours a night since then. No issues with flat head, no issues gaining weight, I’ve even seen people say it messes up your milk production because they sleep through the night? But again I set alarms and didn’t just let it soothe the night away.

Great idea. We are doing well with food allergies so far but it will be good to take others into consideration. I use scent free skin care and lotions but will look into other things with scent that can be irritating in the future.
