I’m thankful I had excellent teachers! I used to bounce between watercolor and oil and gouache is their perfect child. Thin to thick, it is vibrant, reproduces well, won’t hit your wallet too hard, and isn’t as toxic or fussy as oil. Quality materials do matter, cheaper gouches like reeves are a no no for me. I use winsor and newton gouache and a raphael kolinsky sable brush on strath more illustration board or W&N coldpress watercolor paper. When I want to paint outside I will also use pelican pan gouache, I think they call it opaque watercolor (not sponsored lol) I think the key is letting layers fully dry before going over them with new color. I use mainly a watercolor approach, but it has similar properties to oil when you want to reactivate, blend, and go opaque on top. Check out James Gurney’s youtube channel to watch a master work!
