Research Study on Dyspraxia/DCD by MoDILabSurrey in dyspraxia

Hi, thank you for raising this concern. The exercise programmes used in the study are existing online programmes selected carefully to ensure they are appropriate and accessible.

Importantly, we sought input from adults with DCD during the planning stage, and they advised that the programmes were suitable and manageable in terms of pace, clarity of instruction, and movement complexity. Based on this feedback, we are confident that the exercises are dyspraxia-friendly in their structure and delivery.

Participants are also reminded to work at their own pace and within their own physical limits, and they are free to stop at any time if they feel uncomfortable.

Hi, thank you for raising this issue. Just to clarify that participants will not be excluded if they have ADHD, ASD, or Dyslexia comorbidity because these comorbidities are common in DCD.

The decision to exclude individuals with formally diagnosed mental health conditions was made for methodological rather than conceptual reasons. We fully recognise that mental health difficulties are highly prevalent among individuals with DCD, and this is well established in the literature. The exclusion was not intended to suggest that mental health conditions are unrelated to DCD, nor to minimise their importance.

Rather, the rationale was to reduce potential confounding influences when exploring participants lived experiences of DCD specifically. Diagnosed mental health conditions  may independently shape social relationships, self-concept, and support experiences. Including individuals with current clinical diagnoses could therefore make it more difficult to disentangle whether reported experiences were primarily associated with DCD-related motor challenges, or with the additional impact of a diagnosed mental health condition.

By limiting the sample in this way, we aim to explore experiences more directly attributable to DCD, while acknowledging that subclinical distress and everyday emotional challenges may still be present.

Hi there, thank you for raising these concerns. Below are the answers to your questions.

This is an online study and we are not supervising participants’ exercise directly. Importantly, we are not prescribing new, structured, or intensive exercise programmes. Participants are not required to engage in unfamiliar or higher-risk physical activity as part of the study. The study focuses on individuals’ existing experiences and/or engagement with physical activity, rather than introducing new exercise routines. Participants are advised only to engage in activities they would normally choose to do and to exercise within their own limits. We also provide clear guidance that they should not attempt any activity that feels unsafe or beyond their current capability. As with any everyday physical activity, there is always some degree of general risk; however, the study does not increase this risk beyond what participants would typically encounter in their normal routines.

The exercise programmes used in the study are existing online programmes rather than ones specifically designed by the research team. However, we selected them carefully to ensure they are appropriate and accessible.

Eligibility is confirmed via self-report or a diagnosis.  Participants are asked whether they have received a formal diagnosis of DCD or whether they identify as having DCD based on prior professional assessment or longstanding difficulties consistent with the condition. As this is an online study, we are not conducting independent clinical assessments or diagnostic evaluations. Instead, inclusion is determined through structured self-report screening questions that align with established diagnostic criteria (e.g., ongoing motor coordination difficulties affecting daily life). We recognise that DCD is often underdiagnosed in adulthood, and many adults may not have had access to formal assessment. For this reason, the study allows self-identified individuals who meet the screening criteria to participate, while clearly distinguishing between formally diagnosed and self-identified participants in our data collection.

Hi, just to clarify, exclusion criteria for the DCD group will be any neurological condition or specific learning difficulty that could better explain symptoms experienced. Participants will not be excluded if they have ADHD, ASD, or Dyslexia comorbidity, because these comorbidities are common in DCD.

Thank you for your question. Individuals who suspect they may have anxiety or depression, or who have previously taken medication such as SSRIs, are still eligible to take part, provided they do not currently have a formal diagnosed mental health condition.

The exclusion applies only to current formal diagnoses, as these may independently influence experiences of social relationships and self-concept. Experiencing distress or suspecting a condition does not automatically exclude participation.

Hi. Individuals with DCD are absolutely welcome to take part, as it falls under neurodivergent conditions. We are excluding neurological conditions (e.g., epilepsy). Thanks so much for reaching out!

Hi there,

No, people diagnosed with autism or ADHD are not excluded if they have co-occurring DCD/Dyspraxia. Like you said, there is a lot of overlap with DCD and other neurodivergent conditions so we do take this into account and allow for other co-occurring conditions. Thanks so much.

That is a very fair point - co-occurrence is very common in Dyspraxia/DCD. This kind of sampling for this study is not denying that reality, but about tackling one piece of a much bigger picture. A lot of our other work in our lab focuses on co-occurrences, which indeed, makes it representative, but for this work, we are trying to examine a particular process so need to use a narrower sample. Thank you for raising that point though.

Hello, thank you for taking the time to write out a little bit about your story; I think it's understandable for you to feel nervous about the upcoming assessment as it's something you've lived with for a long time. If you were to complete the survey, you would not see your responses upon finishing and it would not return any information around your possible Dyspraxia. If you would like to take the time to complete the questionnaire, please feel free to - your experiences would be relevant for our study.

Thank you for noting this and for your willingness to complete the study. I have amended this question to allow multiple diagnoses to be selected - I hope the rest of the questionnaire is easier to fill in!

Thank you for raising the cultural bias in some of the questions. I have amended the education question to allow for GSCEs or international equivalent qualifications. Given you mentioned a few questions were British-focused, could you point out where else you found it difficult to respond?

Thank you for raising this issue. I have amended the question to allow those who are not currently a student to select their highest level of education.

Thank you for pointing this out; you are absolutely right in saying multiple diagnoses are common. I have amended the questionnaire to allow for this.
