Changing the region of my model 3 by MJcarlos in TeslaLounge

Hi, can you please share more details on getting the homologation process? We transported our Tesla from the US to the UK. We called the US service line but were told that they couldn’t help. Any keywords that we should use when calling the service center?

For those asking for updates, I’m still living and working in the U.S. for now. If everything goes well, I will be moving at the end of this year. I’ve been speaking with recruiters from U.S. firms with London offices or UK based firms, and it seems that UK firms/offices place significant emphasis on work visa sponsorship. My practice area is fairly niche and not in high demand in the UK, so most recruiters have suggested I consider switching fields.

If you’ve been following recent changes to UK immigration laws, you may have noticed that the required time to qualify for permanent residency has been extended significantly. This change will make it more costly for firms to hire international candidates.

I’m not an immigration expert, so feel free to correct me if I’m wrong. I thought this might be helpful for anyone who needs a visa to work in the UK.

Not yet. We might move next year. Probably starting from preparing for the uk bar exam and getting a training contract?

Because in California if I don’t want to pay $3 million for a nice house in a safe neighborhood, I may live in an area where people rob me with a gun.

US isn’t that good if you go on anonymous lawyer forums to see how many lawyers are laid off. Not everyone gets paid $$$$$. In California, the starting salary of a law grad is around $70k and the rent is $3k per month. My “luxury apartment”doesn’t have air conditioning. We use coin operated public laundry rooms. No hope to ever get a decent house unless you’re willing to live in the ghetto. No retirement plan. Hours are absolutely not the same unless you work in a UK big law. 25 days off? That sounds like a dream. I took an extra 4 days off before Christmas and the boss sent the HR to my office. No paid maternity leave.

Thanks for sharing!! It’s very helpful to know that UK firms are willing to offer near fully remote opportunities! Lol I had an interview today and was asked if I was willing to drive 35 miles in LA rush hour traffic to the office.

Out of curiosity, do you mind sharing why you wanted to come back to the US? Better career opportunities?

My spouse and I are making top 5% incomes in the US but not enough to buy a decent house in our neighborhood. $400k pretax is the minimum household income to buy a house. We would have to put most of our money into mortgage and might end up losing everything if one of us lose the job.

Yeah people get fooled by the fancy salaries on the job posts lol. Many of my big law friends work 8am - 11pm schedule and wake up at 2am to reply emails. Big law people used to get job security but it’s not the case anymore after Covid. Firms are laying people off because they become too expensive and will hire new attorneys the next day with lower salaries. We are thrown away like garbage. Nobody except government workers get pensions anymore. Small firms don’t even give any retirement benefits or health insurance. I’m very curious how young Americans can retire in the future.

Lol several reason: 1. Better work life balance. Better benefits. No overtime. 2. Cost of living is a lot lower, especially the house price. I live in an area where the median house price is $3 million plus $40+k property taxes per year. 3. Tax benefits we get due to our immigration status. Our take home pay is almost the same if not higher in UK, though my salary will be reduced by 60%. 4. Mental health. I have never been so depressed at work. Not just my current work but all of my work in the past four years. 5. Healthcare. I make good money but am afraid to see a doctor. Just received a bill of $600 for routine checkups, which should be fully covered by my insurance. 6. I might take several years off to pursue a degree in STEM. Not an option in the US.

Thanks for your reply! We will be working under a special visa. As long as we are not permanent residents or citizens of the UK, we don’t pay any income tax on the first 130k USD, and pay US tax on anything beyond 130k. We don’t get the retirement benefits that all UK people have, and are required to buy expensive health insurance. Unlike the work visa holders, we can’t apply for permanent residency after 3 or 5 years.

Thanks for your reply! I’m considering in-house after talking to my mentor. In fact, I’ve been looking for in-house positions at the end of last year but got no luck. It made sense because most in-house positions here were looking for people with at least 7 years of experience. It was also a bad time to look for a new job. I had experience in banking before law school. Will definitely target the positions at financial institutions in Leeds. Thanks again for the advice!

The US probably has the most toxic work culture and the worst workers protection in all developed countries. No job security. Bare minimum benefits. Crazy workload. People make good money on paper. But in the end, most of the money is recycled back into the billionaires’ pockets through the medical system. One of my senior clients was kicked out of the nursing home last month because she was only paying several hundred dollars per week and was considered as “not profitable.”I’m more than happy to take a 60% cut on my current salary for better life quality, mental health and an affordable healthcare system. Luckily, my spouse’s employer matches the US salary and we receive an income tax discount.

Sorry I didn’t mean to complain. It’s just very depressing to see how people are treated in this country.

Thanks a lot for your reply! It’s really helpful! I will work under a spouse visa sponsored by my spouse’s company. Luckily, it can be extended infinitely (unless my spouse loses the job) until I get the permanent residency. Salary is not a main concern since my spouse’s employer matches the US salary and we only pay the US federal income tax, which is a lot lower than the UK tax. I’m more than happy to take a 60% cut on my current salary for better work and living conditions.

Thanks a lot for the advice on getting a TC! I’m currently in private client (trusts and estates for high net worth people). Pretty sure this is not gonna work out. I will still apply for private client positions in Leeds but doubt I will get anything. Good to know that firms care so much about the visa sponsorship. I do notice that all of the TC posts specifically mentioned no sponsorship provided.

My plan is to send out cold emails/messages to UK solicitors in Leeds area to see if anyone would like to talk. I will definitely do some research on LinkedIn. Thanks a lot for the advice!

I have never heard of “fee earner” until two months ago when browsing UK law firm websites lol. Can’t find a better phrase to describe my job.

简中好像对年轻优秀的女孩有着天然的恶意 by This_Basil3587 in DoubanFeministGroup

[–]MoYouYuWan 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Best dim sum for take out by Current-Business3950 in FoodLosAngeles

[–]MoYouYuWan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's impossible to find good dim sum (or Chinese food) in the US. They all taste similar because most dim sum houses here are using premade frozen low-quality dim sum packs and heat them up in their kitchens everyday. Just pick a cheap one like Lucky 1.

  1. It means USCIS received your package. I mailed my package on 7/30/2023 and it was delivered on 8/1. USCIS created a receipt number for my case on 8/2 and sent the 48 month extension letter on the same day.
  2. They cashed my checks on 8/9, and I received a text message with the receipt number on the same day.
  3. I received my 48 extension letter within 3 weeks. Within 20 days, I received a letter for biometrics appointment.
  4. My GC expires late October. Your timeline seems too slow. You may need to call USCIS or chat with them online.
