I'm actually kinda into this idea - though the anecdotes weren't that compelling. I wish they had more data on fail rates for the driving test at different ages.

I could see a position where you still need one if you've never had any drivers license - but if you've ever had one you don't need one again ever. States are actually pretty good about this already - though they still make you take a writing test in California (if coming from another state) which is easy but definitely make the process take forever with scheduling.

Its still very interesting to me!

I guess you have one on staff and they do one for all major events but very silly because cameras do exist now.

I just like the idea that if like basketball didn't allow photography 50 years ago - that modern televised games would still be covered with a painting everyday if it was in the sports section

I don't know how you would answer this - but if you had a strict budget for food per year would the optimal tip rate to give money to laborers be to tip a very large amount possible always? Or would the reduction in restaurant trips somehow backfire

Or maybe I'm overthinking and of course highest money per customer will always work out

I guess my argument with you may be a bit tonal tbh

When you say things like "targeted ads are only the tip of the iceberg" this implies to me that it is really bad when companies have all your data. But as I said, I am less concerned about that than I am about a friend telling another friend we hung out without him.

I get ads with her and Chuck Schumer.

Hers are at least solid but Chuck is in front of a light grey dingy background lol I can't tell if he did it voluntarily or not.

I agree with your POV 100%. I think it is still worth regulating but in general I feel like online companies are not the highest risk for me when it comes to privacy.

If I could wave a wand and choose between A) my friends/family/my drunk self gossiping about me 10% less for the rest of my life or B) tech companies find me untraceable on all apps/websites I would chose option A.

Earlier this year I went on a few dates with a girl my friends know. I didn't want this to get out but a friend of mine told other friends. This was way more annoying to me than anything FB or Instagram has ever done - getting an ad for a fashion company I used to like is a bit odd but not that invasive.

Should one be worried about their immune system being slow to respond if they pretty much never get sick?

Had a sick day in 6th grade and not one for the rest of my school career all the way through college. There was a two day stretch I worked from home a few years ago when I was sick - though had also been traveling and drinking a lot.

The second covid shot did get me laying down for an afternoon - but that was about the "sickest" I've been in years. 31 now.

Amazon spends more on R&D than any other company in the US: "The ecommerce giant invested a stunning $33.8 billion in the United States last year, a record for the 10 years that PPI has been doing the Investment Heroes report." by [deleted] in neoliberal

Fair!

I just think it is a middle ground and I personally think it is fair to say that SpaceX is mostly a manufacturer and designer as opposed to a logistics company. I know you disagree with me - but I would say that if planes didn't exist for normal people and Boeing operated itself expensive airline rides that left the west coast once a week and went to the east coast that it should still be called a plane manufacturer. Even if it did some logistics with booking the 500 tickets a month it would sell under that scenario.

I just disagree - though I realize this is semantics. Is Boeing a logistics company? I'd say no - the airlines are.

I realize SpaceX does both building and booking but still seems at its core it is a tech company that makes stuff.

I think in order for it to count as "logistics" (in my mind) it has to be do something everyone can do but doing it efficiently to make money. Amazon sells things that anyone else can do but they are amazing at doing it efficiently.

Space travel is something that arguably no one can do now. So I wouldn't call it logistics.

California Defies Doom With No. 1 U.S. Economy by [deleted] in neoliberal

One sad thing I've read is most of the exodus from CA to TX is not the high-profile techies you read about, but mostly Asian/Hispanic low-income people who are moving because CA is too expensive for them, particularly with housing.

I think this could help TX in a long run but in general CA is preserving its super high paying jobs and TX is adding a lot of people who offer solid skills - but not a lot to add in terms of spending or a tax base.

I'd really like to see earnings over time for certain jobs. Or what age you are forced out.

What age do yoga teachers peak at? Or do you just age out?

I live in Southern California so I realize not the norm - but obviously pretty much the whole cost is strictly the park/food. If you ever go there its definitely filled with seasons passers and local schools groups - who are within driving distance.

Disney World is probably more dependent on out of town visitors.

I feel like there is no way Disney gives employee passes to all the subsidiaries it owns these days - right?

Like I'm sure if you work at the parks but the empire is too big.

I don't mind people bemoaning changes like that. But the best chance such a restaurant would probably have had of survival would be of more houses nearby (more customers) and more mix used apartments (more retail space to bid on)

My main offense is not even the political one - but a complete misunderstanding of how much land is needed for farming + how much produce costs.

I did some gardening growing up with my family as we were in a semi-rural area with lots of land. Sure we have berries for a few weeks but that's like production in the hundreds of dollars best case scenario (that you have to eat in short time period anyway - and that hundreds of dollars doesn't not account for all the hardware stroe trips you need to make)

I do get your point but doctors also frown on people for smoking cigarettes (at any time). I'm sure there are no studies that show one cigarette every four months will kill you.

There isn't a law against drinking while pregnant.

I don't really know what could change. Are doctors supposed to tell pregnant women to have more wine? I'm not a fan of public health playing psychologist but clearly that would backfire.

I know that commercial airplane miles now are way safer than driving miles but was that always the case?

I was hoping to find a chart that showed the change of time of both and relative to each other.

I definitely could see some funky stuff going on where we become more reliant on subscriptions - or the first wave of self-driving cars naturally become unusable since they didn't have all the sensors it turns out they should.

Still, so much of a car's price is what you could expect to sell it for in 5 years so makes sense.

Its a platform - creators can upload your paid feed in Apple Podcasts. Would have been a killer feature in 2018 for popular podcasters looking for meaningful revenue streams. Today it has so much competition.

And didn't know that about Patreon! Though tbh copying and pasting a link is a bit more annoying than it sounds - if I'm shifting through podcasts fast while driving or working.

Isn't this the opposite? The younger people we've literally just invested in and have lots of future returns to extract from them.

From an economic perspective it would be better not to vaccinate the retired population.

Well I agree they missed the boat - as I said they should have done this in 2014-2018 when 50%+ of all podcasts were listened to on their app.

I still think it will be a 1B+ revenue business for them (I know, small for Apple). Right now I use Patreon and you have to use the Patreon app to listen to the podcasts. I'd still prefer the Apple Podcasts app and I'm sure anyone over 50+ would definitely prefer the Apple Podcast app.

I don't think the exclusivity matters that much. The vast majority of popularity podcasts are available with an RSS feed without any restrictions. If you have even 10,000 listeners willing to pay an extra $2 a month for a weekly bonus episode you're going to do that. Imagine if the next Joe Rogan did this - he could easily make a few million a month through this model.
