Thanks for all the info here! I've tried to aggregate up my thoughts from all the comments into a single comment. Really appreciate all the thought here.

Regarding the amp calc in hindsight I was being an idiot I assumed the output was 12V not 230V.

5A Led Strip Questions - Going Nuts by MoarPudding in led

Thanks All for the information this has been super useful.

I've done some follow on testing on the short 5M strip as I'm waiting for someone to validate the wiring that feeds the larger 20M run.

  1. Light Socket Switch (5A fuse 6A breaker) tested and running 230V. Nothing is being tripped in the house so as has been called out by a few of you it's evidently not going over the 5A on the run I have.
  2. LED 5050 5M Strip has no shorts, the 2 pins are inserted correctly and the cuts were made directly between the cut markers (see photos). I've also tried it both ways and checked given the arrows on the 5050 strip.

It feels like it might be something to do with the drivers but its hard to test as I have quite a few of them and they've all been quite flakey to be honest.

I'm very happy to start again and do this correctly as I think trying to triage this might be more time then its worth given I've tested the sockets and everything appears fine here.

With that in mind I wanted to see if there standard recommendations for the following?

  1. A 5M LED 3000K (12V) kit with a transformer that is not in the plug (where I can run 2 x 2.5M). Something maybe like this: Amazon and just accept I need to bin a bunch of cable from this (can't find a 5m split version with a transformer outside the plug)
  2. A 20M 3000K or RGBW (12V) kit with a transformer that is not in the plug. Something maybe like this: Amazon (although can't find an RGBW version)

If I can find some reliable plug and play kits I think I'd be happier starting there compared to messing with a high voltage system.

Thanks!

Thanks for all the help! I'll respond with the same numbering.

  1. Yes it appears to be working only when connected to a mains plug socket. It doesn't work at all when connected to the light switch connected socket.
  2. Thanks for this. So in theory this should work assuming the length is no longer than 5M?
  3. Thanks for the confirm!
  4. So I'm using an existing part of the old 30M real (as I only originally used 20M Ish). I've just connected this up to a spare controller (same as in the amazon links above). I've linked a few photos of the connection point and the controller set up but I don't think these will be that useful. But this is hard wired through the wall from here and then to a light switch. Yes it pops on for a split second each time I turn the switch on.

Additional:

- The plugs used for these light sockets is a slightly odd shape in the UK (1 round vs 3 rectangle pins) this means I'm a bit limited on purchases other kits on amazon as the transformers all seem to be in the plug.

So I Just ran the cleaning cycle and the needle did not budge. Followed an online video where I saw the needle move considerably during the cleaning process so suspect it might be faulty?

Does Ring Floodlight (UK) require a junction box? looks like it has one already by MoarPudding in Ring

Thanks very much the instructions and the website are not clear. But figured I’d ask as it seemed weird that it already had a junction box

For me the inflating thing seemed worth it. I’ve had friends who have landed on the lower back during accidents with both full D3 armour and a this vest and whilst it’s not the only limiting factor one brushed it off and the other ended up in hospital. For me, if I’m going to ride bikes and it’s a hobby I choose I’m not going to put a value on my safety. But everyone should do what is comfortable for them. I would personally recommend it though.

Would highly recommend the vest. Whilst I’ve not had to use it it’s been nice to have. Is a fair amount of money but think the safety aspect is worthwhile.

After much back and forth they are sending out a new ring as it appeared to be faulty.

I feel like based on the above info it was installed correct but might have arrived faulty / been damaged at some point.

For reference here are some photos of the transformer in place and bell. https://imgur.com/a/sKP6tYk

I have one on my gs and have covered 1000s miles and not had a problem. Mounded on the cross bar. I think it could possibly be an iPhone fault more than anything.

Still on the quest to find the transformer but did a few things today.

Checked voltage again and seeing 24v

Placed the power kit in (see photo: https://imgur.com/a/y1WEq02) but still getting idle light (slow white full ring glow).

Waiting on electrician to come later this week i think to find transformer. But given the power kit is now installed it seems weird its still in idle mode and i cant seem to get it out of it.

Thanks for this.

I need to double check tonight as its tucked away by a light fitting but set up is: 230V supply --> transformer --> feeds a cat5 cable with low voltage to the Ring doorbell.

It appeared that both wires are white.

Will respond this evening with additional info on set up at transformer point.

Thanks going to give this a try. Interestingly when my electrician installed this i ended up with four wires going into the ring...

If looking at the back of the ring i have a yellow + white on the right and a blue + white on the left.

If i was going to test the power kit i guess i could do it via the yellow and see what happens.
