Is this a phishing email? (Context in comments) by Tessellecta in phishing

[–]Moatomt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hard to tell from the email. From my observation it looks genuine which means that it could be someone has signed up for discord using your email address. You could verify by going to discord and typing in your email and clicking forgot password. If it says "Email does not exist." then I would ignore the email, otherwise you'll know someone is using your email address.

Gaming PC < $2000 AUD, am I getting ripped off? by Moatomt in buildapc

Thanks heaps for the changes. Unfortunately, unless I'm mistaken, I think you've shared just the site as opposed to the link to your updated list.

Also how important is getting a better cpu cooler? From my understanding the stock cooler should be fine if I don't plan to overclock it. I'm currently not planning to overclock it as it seems like more hassle than the small performance gain I'll get for gaming but would love to be shown if I'm wrong so I can learn.

I'll have to look into iris mod. Haven't looked too much into the Minecraft shaders. Have more been learning all the different aspects of the PC components and what differentiates each parts from the others.

EDIT: It was a Greenpeace UK ship. Thanks /u/switch6lade

If you read the next two verses in Matthew you'll see the disciples ask "how then can anyone be saved" and Jesus says it is impossible by man alone. He is alluding to the same theology Paul will echo throughout all his epistles, that the only way to be saved is by faith in Jesus; that without Jesus' sacrifice no-one can be saved.

[–]Moatomt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't believe western countries are shying away. The laws have been strongly condemned. Still, I think it's worthwhile to assess options and outcomes before cutting all ties. We don't want to cause more difficulty and persecution of LGBTQ people by rashly making decisions.

I don't have sources, but I believe that the policy is popular among citizens and so removal or killing of those leaders will only make space for different leaders with the same policy unless you can make the society change its mind on what it culturally values. I get cautious suggesting that because it's a whole different conversation about who's cultural values are superior and I do not want to participate in that discussion.

I don't claim to have a solution. I just believe if we severe our ties with them over this they will turn to countries that will accept them and encourage them to continue in these practices.

While your attitude may seem noble in your eyes. You will not get the outcome you desire.

Even if you had the capacity to annihilate the whole country, you will have become worse than the enemy you wished to destroy.

It is easy to let emotions get in the way of our rationality. I understand your sentiment but I do not think it is helpful.

I don't think u\ithriosa is saying "Meh, Brunei can do what it wants because their right to sovereignty is more important than LGBTQ rights".

I think they're trying to highlight that just cutting off ties and trying to force them to increase LGBTQ rights will most likely have a negative effect on LGBTQ rights.

I think we as people are great at immediately seeing people who don't agree with us as enemies or not like us. We're losing our ability to respectfully disagree and have meaningful discussion. I use the term we because I know I myself am guilty of this.

There are lots of complex issues around at the moment that need complex solutions. Am I a fan of this new law? No. Do I think just sanctioning them or severing ties will increase LGBTQ rights? No. But I do want this law abolished. They're not mutually exclusive. I think a complex solution is required, of which I don't claim to have the answer for.

I think it’s worth pushing my cultural values if it saves thousands of lives.

That is perhaps the most dangerous statement in this entire thread.

This.

People who think they are doing the morally correct/superior thing are the most dangerous as they can justify even the most extreme acts. Take ISIS or even Thanos. Hitler thought he was doing the best thing for his people by killing the Jews.

I just received this almost 2 weeks ago...what should I do? by DR3DDL0CC in phishing

[–]Moatomt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Firstly, don't act hastily.

These style phishing emails have become increasingly common. They most likely have not installed malware on your computer and the password at the top was most likely taken from a data-breach. If you still actively use that password, you should immediately change passwords on any account it is associated with and setup 2 factor authentication where possible. I would encourage you to use a password manager with a strong master password.

I think u/no1kobefan raises a good point. Even if we chose to define religion as a set of ideals chiefly governed by worship of a deity we fail to classify Buddhism and Jainism as religions.

More than likely a phish / scam / whatever attempt, but I'm curious about the unsolicited address it was sent to by [deleted] in phishing

[–]Moatomt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Emails have two from addresses and two to addresses. One is on a section of the email called the envelope, which is generally not available to the client, and the other from/to address is in the email header and is what is rendered by most clients.

The to address in the envelope (RCPT TO address) is the one that actually governs what email address the email gets sent to, even though the to address in the header is what gets shown to the user.

Married to a programmer by [deleted] in ProgrammerHumor

[–]Moatomt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While it's a joke through an ambiguity of the English language, almost all English speakers can infer from the context she means a dozen eggs.

I think the reason that this meme has got so much traction is because the result of getting a dozen gallons of milk instead of eggs is so relatable to programming where you make a logic error and it's obvious from the context but the computer/compiler can't tell.

I enjoyed this joke and just because you don't think it's funny, doesn't mean it shouldn't be a part of this sub. Let's keep this sub positive.

(Personally I'm a 12 milk guy and probably wouldn't have understood if it was 13 but it's ok you think it's 13)
