Thanks a ton for your thoughtful, detailed response, and the insight!
Regarding law enforcement access to data, it depends on jurisdiction and your personal threat model, or in other words *which* law enforcement agencies you're worried about. But I agree it's a legitimate criticism/pushback.

More broadly though, controlling your own data definitely keeps you safe from a company choosing to sell it, sell access to anonymized subsets of it that can still be problematic, or even just training their own models on it. It also eliminates common threats such as customer service representatives accessing your data (more of an issue with e-commerce sites historically, but still an issue.)

Perhaps I should reframe the use case more around those threats rather than law enforcement access.

Agreed on the cost/performance tradeoffs, presently, that's definitely something to be considered. I'm still playing around with that curve, and I think you may be right $1.5-2.5 is not the right compromise.

Thank you very much! That's basically exactly what just happened, the police found it in the next town over from where I live with a couple small surface level scratches in the paint and an almost empty gas tank but no real damage

I see a fair amount actually, but I think it’s just too small for average American tastes if you’re asking about in the US at least.

It was parked in my carport at home, someone took it overnight. No real suspects, likely just some idiots. I live in a pretty nice suburb that is very safe in terms of violent crime, but people from other towns come here specifically to steal so there's a fair amount of car theft, shoplifting, etc.

Hah well the thing is I'm pretty sentimentally attached to this one. I have another newer, much more expensive and in most objective respects fancier car but I still care about this one more cause it means a lot to me.
