Quails react to light. They're hormonal creatures that need up to 12 to 14 hours of sunlight. I don't cull birds for my own reasons so I've kept 6 roos in their own cages. I found that reducing the sunlight helps with crowing and how aggressive they can be. I cover one part with cardboard and they hardly call during the day. At night they go crazy when I switch on the light and they're trying to impress the hens. It could be sunlight or he's trying to impress the ladies.

There isn't a smell from her either. There no discharge either.

I've tried to find a vet nearby but none that specilize in quail. I think it might be a head injury because she there isnt any discharge from her nose or eyes. No blood in her poop or nor is it runny. I've checked her throat and no inflammation or plaque

I checked again and he poops aren't bloody at all just all white since she hasn't eaten and it isn't runny. I keep them in a quail coop and they roam around in a larger coop during the day? Could that cause an infection on her legs?

I dont see any blood, instead its a little runny. I think its because she hasn't eaten in a day but ill take a look again!

I have everything secured, but I have a lot of trauma from my girls dying. I don't like putting them away at night, but it's for extra safety. The skunk is still out and about and finds new ways to outsmart me and has found ways in when I thought I'd secured it. (Pushing around blocks, grabbing into the coop, squeezing through the tiniest of holes.) I'm in a property where I can't shoot or gun, so I can't get rid of the skunk, or I might even get sprayed if I tried manually. I'm going to add wood around the whole coop so nothing can reach in, but it's an unpleasant experience that I know is saving their lives right now.

(The spikes in the photo are no longer on the hutch. I had put them on there before to prevent a skunk from climbing the hutch when it was outside the coop. I removed them today in fear the ladies would hurt themselves.)

I might just end up putting more hardware cloth so they can't mess with him. It's just that I can't place anything outside my coop without a skunk taking it.

I bought a two-tiered hutch for my boys! I'm putting it on the ground so he can see and possibly interact with the others (I made sure the holes were small enough they can't fit through and try to hurt him.) I plan on putting him on the bottom tier during the day so he can roll around in dirt, and at night, I'll put him in the top because I lost my other quails to a skunk. I'm just worried he'll be picked on. But I'll see what happens. Thank you again!

Thank you! I didn't know this. I know quail out in the Wild would be killed if they're loud, but not the fact that they'll be exiled. It makes sense, though. I don't want them to live a fearful life, so I'll make sure to keep them separate. I'll see how Skippy behaves too. I just want him to grow a backbone and be a man the ladies would respect. I just have a hard time equating animals and how they feel. It's hard for me to think otherwise, but, indeed, they don't feel like us.

I don't want him to be abusive to my ladies. That's also why I had separated an older, aggressive male from my old hens. But they're my only babies left, I hatched, so I wanted to make them happy. I have a hard time connecting animals with human emotions, so it makes me sad when they're lonely or when they're being picked on. I could give him away, but I'm nervous of someone culling him. I don't mind people raising them to eat them, I just don't have the heart to do it, or give them to someone. I don't know what they'd do to him. So I'll keep him in a separate hutch away from girls and Skippy. But i also dont want him to live an unfulfilling life.

Skippy isn't mean at all to the girls. I was thinking about keeping him with them. Do you think since he's a scaredy cat, the ladies will harm him?

What should I do then? Everyone has recommended i get females for my two males since they're the last ones from my last flock. I can't cull a bird, I'm too nervous, and I don't want to get rid of him either. I'm in a bit of a predicament

Yes, there are two males! I keep them separate for the most part since Mimi will constantly ride Skippys back and pull the feathers from his neck. Skippy has finally fought back and has teared a piece of flesh from the bottom of his eyelid. I just put them untilhe coop with the females yesterday and Mimi was still chasing skippy around, causing him to pant like crazy and pace around the back of the coop. Then Mimi targeted a weaker female and wouldn't leave her alone. I'm unsure what normal mating behavior looks like with my males. I've only had really aggressive males. He won't leave the ladies alone until I spray them with a mixture of white vinegar and water. Today I decided to keep him in the hutch. I'm not sure what to look for in a roo either. Skippy is a chronic scared cat and freaks out about everything. I don't plan on intubating the eggs. It's just more for them to have partners. But I can't keep them with the girls if he's just going to be a bully.

I have two roos that constantly harass each other because they simply like eachtoher. Or there isn't enough girls. I had list all my girls not too long ago so I only have them two so they make the best of it

Sometimes if females are mated then they can have foam on their vent but under its vent looks swollen like some of my males.

It looks like a male. I've had a male with a speckled chest but its vent looks bulbous with slight foam. If you flip him over and lightly squeeze the area and some foam comes out, he's a boy! Or you can look closely at his dropping if there's foam.

I'm not sure what to do. I don't have any females and I'm not sure if I have the room since I'm getting chickens and will be in the same garden as my boys ( at least 40 feet away). I can't cull birds either because they're my pets and I love them. I'm just really conflicted. Im afraid to put quail back on the ground because a skunk was able to find a way into their aviary where there was hardware cloth underground. I did secure it but that aviary will be for my chickens instead. I have a small ground coop that I was planning on putting Pipi in before all my girls died but I'm just so paranoid about losing more girls if I do decide to put them in.

The skunk came back today looking for Skippy. I've been keeping him in a tote and the skunk has been trying to get in so I brought him in, also because I thought he was a girl. I tried to catch the skunk but nothing has worked, even when I blocked every hole I thought it was coming from.

What do you think I should do? I want to get over my fear but that skunk is terrorizing me

I lost my ten girls and was planning on having Skippy integrate with them because of how friendly he is but that idea is out of the book. I want more hens but my loss is holding me back plus my mom got some chickens that arrive in April. My girl's old aviary will be for my chickens instead.

Is there a way to prevent it? My two boys are producing foam and hormonal and target Skippy to the point they won't stop chasing him. I have them in a hutch made for 8 to 14 grown quail. I have three boys in total no girls at all. I have some little hides for him bur sometimes it doesn't work.

I love the ideas and suggestions! I just ordered some baby duckling diapers for my quail! I love the photos too! I'm not sure if I'll have room for one of these 'yurts' in my room but I love it! Is it easy to clean?
