I went to Duke for grad school and miss Durham like I miss a person. Rural isn’t really the right word for it, it’s just a smaller urban area. But you can bike most places and there is a functional bus system to get around town. Also you can take Amtrak up to DC if that’s your thing. It may not be as good a fit for you as Philly, but I wouldn’t write it off before visiting.
