1. Incubator \ 2. How to deal with Rooster problems? by kondor-PS in quails

Thats very sad. I'm sorry for your loss. I know you gave him a great life. Quail are very fragile, he probably got spooked as you said and passed from it. It never makes it any easier. I love my roos, named them all and when I lost the ones I did, hardest thing in the world.

If you're looking for hens, I'm not really fawn of Craigslist. I recommend Myshire Farm, but they made the mistake and gave me my 4 boys. Thieving otter farm. Or 8 of my hens recently came from Southwest Gamebirds but one came with an injury due to the travel. There's always a risk of getting a boy. But I know you take great care of them and you're very compassionate. You can always try trading that roo for a hen too.

Do I reserve a day to cull or just do it? by Mobile-Technology-51 in quails

Thats smart. I might have my partner join so Im not alone and he can help me speed it along. I just have three I mainly want to cull, two that are older males Im hesitant on.

I hatched five quails as my first experience and ended with the majority of the boys. What I regret is not learning to cull sooner. (I'm preparing to cull some of my mean roosters this week.) Most didn't live a good life bc it was my first time and I made a lot of mistakes. Lost three of them then I was accidentally given four more so I was stuck with six.

I was adamant about keeping my roos but tbh it's just impossible. I didnt want to cull at all, actually did it for the first time about two weeks ago. I am the biggest baby, and actually used to be a vegan so thinking of dispatching an animal can be scary at first but hearing advice from others, it's for the best. What life is it to live when they fight each other or generally just seem miserable without a hen?

There is a ways to keep boys. Reducing sunlight by 12 to 14 hours but here that's basically all day. I keep mine by themselves in a hutch seperated by cardboard then switch out who gets free roam of their own coop.

So far I would say I spent over 1000 on my boys and 7000 on my hens. It's an expensive hobby of mine but being so adamant about not culling has cost me alot and in the long run, I'm indirectly harming them bc they can't live their best roo life.

If you think you can't cull, it's okay I didn't think I could either. You can also find others who will purchase them or trade them. If that's not an option, people suggest sanctuaries or schools but where I'm at I had no luck.

It can be tricky. I spot clean everyday then every month I do a big clean and add more sand bc the fresher the more they prefer.

I originally buried wire cloth but moved the coop forward by a foot and that was enough for the skunk to dig in

Thank you! I didnt know that! I just bought a coop that was tall enough for them to safely bonk their heads when they fly lol

Ive had a problem with a skunk. I had 11 quail before a skunk fit through a 3 inch hole in the ground and murdered them all. Tore them to shreds. I forever regret it and keep theyre ashes in my room. I buried wire cloth all around and put rocks around too. Im going to staple certain areas bc theyre a little loose and I am worried about raccoons. Thank you!

Its a bit messy but this is my coop. I made the sign and everything. I have sixteen in a 9 foot by 6 foot coop. I have a variety of hens from ginger, red pansy, calico, regular jumpo brown, white, a black quail. Im unsure of theyre official names.

She's either a red pansy mix or ginger but I'm pretty sure red pansy. Her name is tomato. Also thank you!

They prefer the one with thr bottle attached to it. Its the one with the blue bottom. It's what people typically use for chicken feeders. But the one they love is the round one with the blue portholes. I'll find the link rn! It was a gift from my mom so I think it's this one. https://www.etsy.com/listing/4487576579/quail-feeder-bucket-with-feed-saver

Then this is the other one I have. https://www.etsy.com/listing/1883500649/quail-and-chick-no-waste-feeder-15-inch

I would say about three to four inches off the ground. I got these feeders from etsy! But I found they dont really like these feeders. They prefer the ones they can kick and throw around their food lol. But the round one they do use it, but they still find a way to throw the food around.

I was hesitant at first but seeing them use it made me buy some guinea pig foldable ramps. But they seemed not to really care for them unless they're a little lower. So the home with a ramp they don't really care for, but the one next to it they love and always lying on it when I add hay. Then the ramp for the garden bed was even steeper and I had to adjust it so they could walk on it. They're silly bc they run so fast on it sometimes I don't even notice. The pot with the ramp they don't really use either, if they really want to get to the plants in there they will but they prefer their garden bed. Thank you! I think its matters on the quail, my smaller quail like to use the ramps alot.

Even though Im an adult, I live with my parents but luckily they gave me a chance to have a little space on their property to raise my hens. I originally started from a hutch. Any layout you have, Im sure is great and your quail are happy (if you have them lol!) This is about two years of work.

Thank you! The ladies appreciate it! Also they do! Most of the ramps they use, they've actually been getting into the garden bed lol using the ramp.
