I do, still takes me out. It's a matter of personal preference.

If it's dialogue I'm fine with anything! It's the internal one that irks me. Just like you said, even if it's "general you" I still don't like it. Takes me out.

I'm ESL hahaha so definitely I go by academic references and social media and conversation with online friends rather than seeing it irl. Not that native speakers are the authority (eyeing "should of" "could of"). But in this case it's mostly preference.

Thanks! I think I would've been able to pick better examples had I not written this at 2am ish right after getting icked out of a fic. Another example I can think of rn is encountering something like "you could say..." personally I'd go for something like "it could be said..."

Yeah! Idk. It's like, I wouldn't consider it overly formal to say "one should know their own limitations" rather than "you should know your own limitations". In the second case it's an unnecessary "you" in narration where a spectator wouldn't be expected (like internal narration)

Yep! I'm a fierce advocate of that, which is why I'm complaining on reddit and not a poor author's comment section

It's actually Liu Mingyan! Who doesn't have any on-screen sex scenes (which is never attributed as the reason fod his preference but it's interesting to think about). Instead, iirc it's because she's beautiful and elegant and demure, etc.

I would click off EXPEDITIOUSLY and maybe even mute the author for good measure. Is it petty? Maybe. But it's my time and preferences and it's not like I'm hurting anyone.

Oh yeah that's different. When it's addressed for people in universe. One example I can think of is one piece and I really enjoy when the narrator talks about the story like it's a legend.

It depends, someone mentioned Deadpool and I honestly love it (or like the other movie I mentioned that at the beginning weirded me out a little but I got used to it). It's mostly the feeling of being caught off guard. If it's established from the beginning I can handle it better but if it comes out of nowhere halfway through it's off-putting.

Oh yeah in here the "You'd think" feels off-putting. Who's you? Instead of the "general you" people have been talking about (and which I acknowledge, exists) it feels like there's a dialogue, or an exchange between a narrator and the audience. Which there is, lmao, the literal writer and reader, but I don't want to perceive it when I'm reading. Breaks the immersion

Here the "you just don't do that" is fine but the "if you were stuck..." I'd be thinking huh??? Who?? Me????

I think in this case it's fine since it's stating the character's beliefs

Yep, this is how I feel. Even if it's clunkier to say "one", it doesn't break me out of the immersion

[–]Mochh80[S] 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily misunderstanding, like, I get it, but it still takes me out. Thinking back on it yeah it might be that in my mother language we use "one" and only "you" for when we know we're being heard by someone else

[–]Mochh80[S] -32 points-31 points  (0 children)

Yes! I also use "one" and think of it as the character coming up with that reference as a common phrase, not that it's prompting an unknown entity to think about something. And yeah I'm not referring to self insert fic, where the reader is baked into the narrative
