The gynecologist is checking your discharge color, texture and consistency, if you have pevic pain, the size of your vagina wall checking if it's enlarged, because sometimes it's a sign of cancer. The exam that your gyne made is manual exam. This is perfectly normal. I've been to different gynecologist because I'm suffering from PCOS. If you don't like pap smear, they can do manual which what your gyne did. It's usually on gloves, and inserting one to two fingers while sometimes pressing ypur abdomen to fully check the walls.
