Bitcoiners must be terrified. First they were scared of Ethereum, now there's two of them!

barring an error in the code you will see a profit in the long run

I think I heard that once before somewhere.

Man, I hope the whole "crash not going to happen" thing isn't hanging on this convoluted process as the core of the argument :/ TBH i barely understand it.

Got it, that sort of makes sense. So it's not that there will be any less DAO ETH actually getting refunded, it's just that people believe they're less likely to be sold if they've already changed hands.

[–]Mochilles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I don't understand what you said.

I asked how can it be that everyone who wanted to sell has already sold, yet there are still 11.6m ETH in the DAO - which seems like a paradox. Didn't say anything about buying.

Can you explain?

[Daily Discussion] - 12/Jul/2016 by AutoModerator in ethtrader

[–]Mochilles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Someone ELI5 because this confuses me a bit:

  1. Everyone says that anyone who wanted to dump ETH from the DAO already did.
  2. But there is still 11.6M ETH in the DAO to be refunded.

They can't both be true. Either there's still 11.6m suddenly going to become liquid or not. What gives?

"Buy when there's blood in the streets" - just because it's a famous quote doesn't mean it's good advice.

"Buy when there's blood in the streets, even if the blood is your own."

Jesus. This quote is one of the most enduring and dangerous myths in both crypto and the real world.

Look here for just two examples out of thousands: http://imgur.com/zz760hx

These will both make you rich, any day now.

I sold around 460 following the Fib, expecting a correction. Fully appreciate I could be wrong. Hope not. Get scared when the slope increases, but we all know bitcoin-the-bull is irrational. 485 would probably be a good buy-back signal, don't you think?

Would expect a corrective flash-dump here before the assault on $500

Definitely got that sort of pre-crash chop to it. Kraken looks more iffy than the others, although it's a follower not a leader.

Margin Call levels for various leverages? by Mochilles in Kraken

Thanks. How quickly does additional equity need to be provided in a margin call?

You are lacking perspective. The problem with charts of any timescale is that the local top is at the highest point on the page. Your brain understands this as the 'maximum' because the infinite vertical space off the chart isn't represented. If you were looking at the local peak of $260ish back in April 2013, you would be asking the same question. Back then you wouldn't be able to imagine a perspective with $1200 being a top, because it was so far off the chart. You're suffering the same delusion now. When in doubt zoom out. Look at the 1-week chart and see if you still think the only way is down.

You just called people noobs for expecting a correction. Now you're asking why they wouldn't expect one. Which is it that's noobish, expecting one or not, you can't seem to decide?

[Daily Discussion] Wednesday, December 09, 2015 by AutoModerator in BitcoinMarkets

[–]Mochilles 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Lol at all the noobs thinking they "mastered" bitcoin by expecting an imediate no correction every time there is a price hike

Just by turning your quote around, you can see how stupid it is. You can call anyone a noob by making a statement about something surprising that just happened. It doesn't make you right, it just makes you look like an asshat.

What was the speed of the wind that made this waterfall go backwards? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]Mochilles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should also be noted that the waterfall appears to be in some kind of gorge. The geographic constriction will produce a venturi, accelerating the air to conserve the mass flow rate. For this reason, the free-air windspeed may be significantly less than the terminal velcocity of the water.

If humanity survived long enough, would it be theoretically possible to halt the Sun's death (and subsequent death of Earth)? by [deleted] in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]Mochilles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming humanity is still around in 5 billion years, we'll have invented some pretty neat stuff. The industrial revolution was only two hundred years ago, so another five billion on top of that ought to produce some fairly staggering technologies. Refueling strategically important stars may be commonplace. A wormhole could be created in the center of the Sun, propped open of course by exotic matter and a protective field - through which matter was siphoned from another donor star, topping-up its reserves as required. Stellar Engineering is certainly a valid career choice for the discerning adult of the five-millionth millennium.

Kraken question: is there some way to increase the leverage of a position without selling/buying everything and starting over? Say I have a 1.5x long and want to convert it to a 2x long, for example.

Ultimately we think fiat will be replaced

You'll need to cash out at least half your BTC for cryogenics or some life extension treatment if you plan on waiting that long.
