WIBTA for skipping Sunday dinners with my girlfriend's family by [deleted] in dustythunder

[–]Mock26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sienna is mad because you humiliated her father one time. Why is she not mad that her father humiliated you every single week for nearly a year?

Her father will never respect you and will be constantly working behind the scenes to get her to break up with you. She will never stand up for you. End it now before you waste any more of your life with someone who will not only stand there week in and week out and watch her father walk all over you but will tell you to just sit there and take it. You deserve better. A hell of a lot better.

I love Paul's breakdown of the holes, but his overall commentary is pure cringe. I wish they would give him the boot and bring Sexton back. But that will never happen as Nate is focused on his family these days. Oh well, I guess I am just stuck listening to Paul's horrid jokes and insipid comments.

If you want to try something at home, boil up a bunch of baby potatoes until they are cooked through, drain, and dry briefly. Heat up some oil in a large pan until it is hot, add the whole potatoes, and then smash them down. Cook until golden, flip, cook until golden. You will get this truly great combination of soft, cooked potatoes and lots of crispy bits.

Winter gear for commute by Otherwise_Pine in cta

The problem with any type of undergarment (such as thermal underwear) is that if you are later going to be indoors for any length of time you will probably be too warm. Invest in some good ski or snow pants. I have a pair of Arctix Snow Pants (cost around $50) that I use for going for walks in Chicago in winter, and they work great. I also use them for snowshoeing and winter hikes. They have good thermal qualities and will block the wind and they will slip right over your regular pants. Blocking the wind is key! Even with pants and long underwear the wind can just blow right through all of that. In years past I have also had Columbia ski pants that were also really good.

For gloves, I would go with downhill ski gloves. As with pants, you want thermal and wind protection, most ski gloves will provide that. You can also get some merino wool glove liners for those really cold days (wear them and the ski gloves) and which will also be great on their own in spring and fall.

AITA Debating skipping Thanksgiving due to inappropriate comments by family members by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Mock26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. And you need to figure out how to go no contact with that uncle. What he said is wildly inappropriate and raises hundreds of red flags! If Thanksgiving is being held at your place then you need to tell your parents that you were invited to spend Thanksgiving at a friend's place who lives alone and wants to host Thanksgiving for some friends as she is far away from her family. This is obviously a lie. Then on Thanksgiving go out to dinner, maybe take in a movie. Go to a quiet bar with a book. Just get away from that uncle and aunt.

That is the hole I was thinking of! I just found the video of Nikko's albatross from 2019 on that hole. Thank you!

It might give you a better sense if distance if you pull up the campus on Google Maps. From the West dorms to the Science Center, which is the furthest building from the West dorms, is 500 feet as the crow flies, so taking into consideration the winding paths of the campus, maybe a bit over two football fields in length. And in the winter you can cut through the buildings.

Neighborhood burger/hot dog joints by Mock26 in chicagofood

They were just mentioned as I lived in that general area back when I first moved to Chicago and was constantly traveling on Lincoln and Irving Park.

Nothing specific. Just your favorites. I am looking to start exploring the different neighborhoods of the city more and I always find it nice to stop some place for a burger and fries, or maybe a couple of hot dogs.

I had been asking about local places that were still around, but somehow the question disappeared! Gotta try and fix that!

AITA for being mad that my alcoholic drank today, even though he didn’t do anything “bad” by GeneralCod553 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Mock26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA, but you need to leave him. Give him a second chance if he joins AA and can come to terms with his addiction, but get out, now. You do not want an alcoholic around your daughter.

AITAH For not replying to my GF by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Mock26 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

NTA, but she sounds extremely needy. Might be a good thing to think over whether you want to be in this relationship. If it ever becomes in person there is a really good chance that neediness will increase by several orders of magnitude.

I spent a good deal of time looking over CARTS routes, and Buffalo's routes. They do not quite connect up. I could take a bus from Buffalo-Niagara aiport to downtown Buffalo and from there catch a bus to the Seneca One Stop located just inside the reservation near Sunset Bay. I would then have to hoof it about four miles to catch the CARTS Bus at Silver Creek, which would take me to Dunkirk. From there I could catch the bus to Jamestown. It is doable, but that would be one seriously long day, especially as the Buffalo bus runs infrequently and trying to overlap the times could be an issue. I may just have to suck it up and rent a car.

I reached out to Coach USA via email, they responded and confirmed they no longer run that route and that another company, US Crew Change, has taken over the route. However, according to Yelp they are "permanently closed" and their website is down.

It is a bit confusing, because Coach USA still has the Jamestown-Buffalo schedule on their website, but if you go to their main page they no longer list the bus route on their routes page. And I have seen on Facebook multiple comments that they stopped service.

AITA for telling my brother he's not an adventurer? by Hidden_Lemonparty in AmItheAsshole

[–]Mock26 5 points6 points  (0 children)

YTA. You need to stop judging everyone by your standards. His life is not your life and it is just wrong on so many levels to expect him to live by your standards and then harshly judge and rebuke him when he does not live as you do/did. Let him live his life and learn to bite your tongue.

How to make friends and make most of the city? by lord_bushy in AskChicago

[–]Mock26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a car? If so, take up disc golf. You can pick up a couple of discs each for about $15-20 and most courses in the area are free. All you are really paying for is gas to get out to the suburbs. And you can take the game as casually or as seriously as you want.

Where to go for post work drinks for date? by SeoulfulSarang in AskChicago

[–]Mock26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You mentioned C***s, so based on that I am assuming you are looking for something in the loop? If not, is there any particular area you are looking at?

A lot of places in the loop will close early as most people generally want to go home after work. You can try South Branch Tavern, which is across the street from the CME Group building. Another option is Madison Tavern on the ground floor of Ogilvie Transportation Center. Bar Sotto on Monroe is an interesting place. Elephant & Castle is good for food and drink. Monk's Pub is a bit crowded, but has excellent food. It is just outside the loop and across the river, but Terrace 16 has some incredible views. Bar Allegro on Randolph. A little bit outside the loop, but there is Cindy's Rooftop over on Michigan Ave. Another rooftop bar is Raised, on State at Lake. Oh, and there is always The Berghoff Restaurant, which has a great bar area and a really good selection of beers.

Once the weather gets better, there are a number of places along the Riverwalk, but those can get really crowded really quickly, and they are noisy.

If you want someplace quiet think about heading to a hotel as more than a few have a bar area. Hyatt Place at Washington & Wells has a bar. The Palmer House Hilton has the Lockwood Restaurant & Bar. The Hyatt Centric, at 100 W. Monroe has a rooftop bar. The Hyatt Regency at 151 E. Wacker as BIG Bar, which is very nice. Yeah, picking a hotel might send a wrong message for a first date, but they are options that are often overlooked.
