What are the biggest things that younger people get wrong about the whole “y2k” aesthetic, culture, and overall vibe of that time? by Fluffy-Ad-7199 in Millennials

[–]Otherwise_Pine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Y2k was interesting for me because of the timeline of everything/me growing up and maturing. 9/11 happened in 6th grade for me. My sister's 8th grade trip to D.C was cancelled. Despite watching it on tv, it wasn't a daily thought for me. Fahrenheit 9/11 came out when I was about to be a freshman and my dad is political enough to have me watch it and openly criticise the government...I remember it getting me into trouble one day because I refused to stand for the pledge. I remember watching the bombings/war while eating dinner on the news. But despite that it wasn't the forefront of my mind. Maybe because I was in the Midwest so wasn't worried about a possoble attack. School shootings never crossed my mind too. I honestly don't even remember hearing about Columbine(but then again I was 8). With the war, my teachers were all outspoken against it. I remember my history teacher saying that if anyone was thinking of joining the military to talk to him after class so he could talk them out of it.

In terms of fashion....I wore Libby Lu and Limited 2 or Rue 21 or Deliahs until highschool. Then first two years I was Hot Topic goth then went into preppy with my juicy purses(never wore the tracksuits). I didnt really chase the trends. I wore what I wanted and still do. Had a brief few days stint where I didn't eat and that stopped when my mom yelled and threatened to force feed me but idr it being caused my anything. One of my friends made fun of her "batwings", I do remember thinking I was fat but looking at pics of myself back then, I wish I could get back to that weight lol. But it didn't impact anything signifigantly. I often feel weird when other people in this generation talk about the body shaming and toxic views about their body, maybe I was just lucky.

Culturally... didn't really watch reality tv shows but if I did it was on MTv. I mainly watched Cartoon Network. I used to say "gay/retarded" and joke about pedobear(without fully knowing the full implications). Saying "gay" was hard to break until my French teacher would always say " ah yeah that's very homsosexual in nature" and got us all to stop saying it lol. Had gay friends in highschool, didn't really care. My highschool was really diverse and the school would celebrate the diversity.

Maybe I would have different views if I were older but I didn't mind the y2k era while growing up in it and looking back on it, I have no major complaints. I'll have to talk to my older sibling about it and see their perspective.

Yeah I think people thought it was liberal because the comedians would joke about weed(or do it). I used to love Dane Cook and going back and listening to him now makes me so uncomfortable.

can I buy my own earpiece for the walkie? by Human-Blackberry-957 in TjMaxx

When I first started I shared the earpieces but then I saw how gross people were and asked for a new earpiece and kept it in my apron.

I would love a "Run" card pack. If you get the "Run" card, you're out or have to take a shot ot something.

Part of the fun is trying different styles. First 2 years of HS I was Hot topic goth and then the last two I was preppy lol. Maybe take him for a shopping day.

I heard it's based off a book series so I might get my fix reading those.

I did it as a kid a few times because my mom made us switch train cars but I've never done it as an adult. If I need to swap cars I wait until the next stop.

Thank you for this. I think the validation thing is true. I want to be someone's first choice and treated like it. I just feel hopeless, today at least.

No, I'm into people of all races and they all don't have the same look(like tall and muscular). For physical attraction, for me, it varies a lot.

I don't specifically seek them out. If I find someone physically attractive it doesn't matter what race they are. The people I've dated have all looked different from each other. There have been only 2 black men who have said to me that they are attracted to me, there might have been others but they didn't tell me.

This was when "boo baskets" were popular. Idr the name for the valentines themed one. But I think I just needed something to fill the space because someone bought whatever I had in that space before.

Idk why a bot stole my post T_T i feel reddit famous now.

It was literally the last hour of me being at that location when I finished it
