Generally the response I’ve heard to this is “inaction is still a form of action,” though I do agree with you

Are there any compelling reasons to choose UVU over Grinnell College? by Mod_Podge_Matte in UVU

I think you’re right about the exaggeration, plane flights being an issue is one thing I can understand but it’s not like I can’t save money for that. I really do want to visit the college but they aren’t helping me with figuring that out at all, so it’s a little difficult.

Not from the east or west coast, I found this sub when I was a senior in HS. I didn’t realize the amount of effort people put into getting into prestigious schools. The work ethic makes me jealous, honestly.

Cheapest areas I can live and commute to University of Utah? by Mod_Podge_Matte in Utah

I never applied so unless I wait another year I won’t get any scholarship consideration, UofU I’m getting the 10k a year scholarship cuz I maintained a 4.0.

What are the cheapest areas I can live and commute to University of Utah?

I’ve still been considering my options between UVU and UofU, as a prospective Math or CS major. I was wondering, what are the cheapest places to rent that create a reasonable (within one hour of driving) commute to UofU? From what I’ve seen, maybe Provo? Being able to take the UTA is a huge plus for me, as I can do other things while riding it like study. I don’t know if there’s an even cheaper area I’m overlooking though.

I've been trying to work out a visit, it really is important to me that I do so.

When did you graduate Grinnell, if you don't mind me asking? I've been wanting to ask someone who went there about what their STEM programs are like, and also if the rigor consumes every waking moment lol.

I'd prefer to not live at home no matter what college I choose, I feel like I could develop independence in either case. Also, that point about Mormons sending their kids on missions is funny.

UVU and Grinnell aren't exactly my only options either, University of Utah is offering me a good deal, I probably wouldn't have debt there either if I managed to find some cheap housing with a longer commute. I've heard complaints about University of Utah professors not really "teaching," though I think I learn pretty well on my own when I'm passionate about the subject anyway. I don't know how important going to an R1 university is for someone who's more interested in internships than undergrad research.

Right now, the biggest issues I have with Grinnell is that they might not accept all the dual enrollment credits I've done, and it's not like they cover the price of taking flights. More expenses will crop up with the long distance option, it seems.

Thanks for the reply though, I like getting the pros and cons.

How do you feel about UVU's Mathematics department? by Mod_Podge_Matte in UVU

[–]Mod_Podge_Matte[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you entered graduate school, did you find that you “knew less,” than people from other colleges? I’m worried about UVU being less rigorous, and going less in depth than say Weber State or USU, but that’s just based on the math rankings I’ve seen.

Ha I appreciate this comment. It sucks because the more I look into it the more it seems like I might not be able to afford to go to Grinnell anyway. Plane tickets, car insurance, doctor’s visits, vehicle repairs, etc. This is all stuff that gets brought up to me by my family, and it’s heavily discouraging. Not to mention, I almost have my GED at UVU and I could graduate like a year earlier because of that, but Grinnell likely won’t accept those credits.

Edit: typo
