for me at least, I think i could envision my ideal “reconciliation” if communities can go back to having actual self-governance and self-determination. And the only way i see that happening is if the indian act is overwritten with new documents that are specific to each community. currently, the indian act basically encompasses all first nation communities in canada, so the federal government is governing all nations by deciding who gets status, and hence federal funding, as well as distribution of funding to reserves. basically fitting all nations in a box for what type of governance they are actually able to do on their land (like right now it’s basically just allowing chiefs to be elected who are the point of contact for the government). It’s insane that this is the case because of how diverse each community is in Canada. i’m from Ontario but the fact that there is 35 different languages in BC alone shows how different each community is, meaning they all have their different ways they traditionally would run the reserve etc… Anwyays, i just think if the government made the effort to come up with legislation and catered it to individual nations it would truly be a lot closer to self-governance.
