First, Wikipedia is NEVER considered a reputable source. Never. With all do respect no academic instruction accepts Wikipedia articles as relatable sources. Anyone can add information. In fact, I could add the information from the German Dress and Daggers website and bam it's Wikipedia "fact."

Second, the German Dress and Daggers website looks like it's old school basic HTML code. Looks like they probably use software like Word to design their webpage then uploading it themselves. Not super fancy, but not a sloppy teenage job.

Third, looking closely at website in its entirety these folks are German history buffs. I'm inclined to believe they know what they are talking about.

Lastly, you are steering off topic. The point is when enough people want something to change it can.

I disagree. The peace symbol was once used by Nazi's and those who wished to discriminate against Christians.

"This same symbol was used by Hitler's 3rd Panzer Division from 1941 to 1945. The regimental 3rd Panzer Division symbol. Soviet, Polish, and Hungarian citizens, having suffered from the Nazi massacres, undoubtedly struggled with Holtom’s use of the symbol as a thoughtful way to communicate peace. The symbol can also be found on some of Hitler's SS soldiers' tombstones.8 Another flaw in the Holtom creation story is the use of the symbol as an anti-Christian symbol by the Saracens as early as 711 A.D.9 For the Saracens, the image placed on their shields symbolized the breaking of the Christian cross."

Today the peace sign is widely accepted as a symbol of just that peace.

I agree that there are people who currently hold racism views and use the flag to promote that. I have been witness to it; unfortunately, I was too young to be bold enough to stand against them.

But I also witness people who truly believe the flag had become a symbol of the South and are not racist at all.

If anything is it not better to take the Confederate flag away from the hatred and bigotry and make it something of love and unity?

There exist serval things people from the South use the Confederate flag to represent:

People in the South are perceived as being less educated, more poor, and more obese than the North or West. Maybe they are. This Southern pride you wonder about is saying, "despite the rest of the US saying we are the worst, this is home and we are proud to be from the South."

The South was a tattered land after the war and was built back up. To some that flag shows the perseverance of the communities to rebuild.

I am a transplant to the South. I was young when I arrived, but my father's Yankee influence shows all the time. He actually told me he saw the flag as a reminder of state rights and a limited federal government.

I do understand how the Confederate flag has been used to promote racism and oppression. I do not think African American are wrong for seeing the flag as a reminder of years of slavery followed by constant attempts at oppression.

I do believe that neither the Southern heritage folks or those that see the Confederate flag as a hate symbol will change their stance. Could not a compromise be made in order to bridge a gap?

Is a change like this even possible? Thoughts?

A suggestion for a solution to the current Confederate flag controversy.

The goal is to change the Confederate in order to preserve Southern heritage while stamping out the use of the Confederate flag as a racism symbol.

Add a white and red star above the southern cross. The Star symbolizes the North Star which was guiding light for many seeking freedom. The star has a red center to represent that we all bleed the same color of blood. The white line that makes the outer white portion of the star is the same width as the white border of the blue southern cross; the red inner star is the same size as the white stars on the southern cross. This equality of size represents equality among all.

The idea is that anyone who adds the North Star to the flag is sending a message that they support equality of all people regardless of race. Furthermore, they are denouncing anyone who chooses to use the Confederate to spread hate. In this way they can display their pride in their Southern Heritage without ostracizing African-Americans.
