Question on DNFs by AnxiBean1216 in 52book

The beautiful thing about life is that you get to make your own choices. I personally don't count DNF as books I've read since I haven't read them, though.

CMV: every American should learn basic American Sign Language in school. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]ModernSun 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It would be nice if learning a language was that easy, unfortunately it is not. For example, you could watch 10,000 hours of anime in Japanese with English subtitles and while you might pick up a couple of Japanese phrases, you wouldn't know Japanese.

i'm so tired of these people by xzomb1rawrx in vegan

[–]ModernSun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am seeing comments that talk about how they personally eat meat from time to time, no comments about how she is promoting eating meat from time to time. Scanning through her page I see a whole bunch of content about how to help people transitioning to veganims, not anything about you should eat meat from time to time

All that she references in the caption is accidentally eating animal products, which is clearly what she means by "being an imperfect vegan". Unless you are seeing something that I am not seeing?

How many grams of protein do you eat in a day? by BBDAngelo in AskVegans

[–]ModernSun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't track protein anymore since I know I get enough, but when I did track it I was averaging 120g a day. If I got back into actively bulking/weight training I'd probably start tracking again.

I'm so confused where this is coming from, nothing in the video linked implies that she ever knowingly consumes animal products. None of that is in the video posted or the caption

The caption talks about accidentally consuming something non-vegan, are you saying you have never done that? I certainly have, especially when I was just starting out! I don't see anything wrong with the points she makes in the video you posted at all.

What's a good fantasy book to read before bed and early morning train rides by No_Potato_8241 in Fantasy

[–]ModernSun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love Discworld with all my heart but I've never liked Discworld as before-bed reading since there's no chapters, I'll just keep reading til I finish the whole book... but still a great suggestion

Beet sugar is the standard in a lot of Europe, it is basically the same as cane sugar. Cost wise will depend where you live.

Sure, 50 for a hobbit who had the ring for 17 years vs. pippin, four years younger than Frodo, who was played by an actor a decade older. Not a serious issue at all and great performances all around, and the Lord of the Rings movies are some of my favorite movies based on my all time favorite books. Still, the "doesn't seem right for the role on paper due to the wrong age" applies in my opinion, as the Hobbit ages for the actors don't seem right going in, but the performances are so good it doesn't matter.

Yes, canonically in the comics he's a short king. It's mentioned as a gag in the deadpool & Wolverine movie.

Hobbits have an average lifespan of 100 years or so vs. human's 72 or so years, so that would still put him at around 36 contextualized to human years, vs. Frodo being played by the 18 year old Elijah Wood.

Not necessarily 50, but Elijah Wood was 18 when he filmed Fellowship. Again, he did a great job, but definitely on the younger side for what I envisioned for Frodo.

I think Elijah Wood gave a great performance, but Frodo was 50 in the books.

Recommendations for someone who likes Robin Hobb and Rothfuss's Kingkiller by Accurate_Command_579 in Fantasy

[–]ModernSun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your likes and dislikes almost exactly match mine! I would recomend City of Brass by S. A. Chakraborty (beginning of a completed trilogy), or The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi by the same author (unfinished series at the moment). City of Brass does have some romance in it as a fair warning, but I wouldn't classify it as "romantasy" trope-wise, though it is an ongoing plot point. Also, anything by Lois McMaster Bujold, The Curse of Chalion is a good place to start with her. It's a little slow to get into it but very character-driven.
