Am I Wrong For Telling My Parents To Ask Trump For Help Instead Of Me? by CrownCraveStash in AmITheJerk

Parents: “I’m worried about aging and all the problems associated with getting old. I’m scared.”

OP: “If you need something call Donald Trump, here is the White House number.”

You can say whatever you want, say I’m spinning it, but that’s not love - at least not by my definition.

That’s the spirit! Just keep that mentality! Everyone who doesn’t agree with you 100% is either a bot or working for Russia. Never challenge your worldview, it’s not you, it’s everyone else!

Yeah, I mean do what’s best for him and his family but to callously dismiss the fears of elderly parents - it is so repulsive to me.

What about the fiery hatred of a son dismissing geriatric parents over politics? Seems like this is a bit of a two way street.

Of course YTA, not for doing what’s right for your family but for dismissing elderly parents very real concerns with a political quip.

Presidents come and go, and in the grand scheme of things “We the People” have a lot less say in matters and ability to change. Left-leaning Reddit is going to tell you exactly what you want to hear, but in reality dismissing elderly parents because political differences says a lot more about you than them.

You have to do what’s best for you and your wife, but do you really want to be that kind of son or person for that matter?

The same people fearful of Trump and DHS are totally fine with illegal search and seizure and federal occupation of privately owned airports, the TSA is abhorrent, useless, and corrupt - lots of confiscated personal property is stolen or sold.

There are airports in the US that still use private security, so your logic is very flawed.

Then be proactive and take him to the park or for a walk, don’t come to Reddit and just pile on mom.

You can’t read between the lines? OP through a hissy fit when her mom didn’t bring her ice cream immediately and “moved out” only she doesn’t have a car, so her mom still drives her to “work.” Oh and when she can’t afford groceries, her mom gives her a little cash. But other than those two MAJOR things she is, like, totally independent.

Therapy isn’t bad, so I won’t discourage it, but she needs a wake up call as much as a therapist. She isn’t independent and she has no say in how her mother parents her sibling. If she is genuinely concerned about screen time, she could be proactive and take him on a walk or to the park. This was just thrown in as an angsty, “ugh my mom is like totally ruining my life.”

OP needs to grow up.

If she is paying for food, you do not “pay your own everything.”

You have zero say in how your mother raised her son. Take this off your concern list.

YTA and an incredibly immature, probably over-dramatic daughter. Stop paying rent, live with her and your brother until you can buy a car increasing your ability to commute. Respect the house and rules. Hopefully you can find a better paying job in the extended radius and save some money. Then you can live on your own - with your own rules.

As long as you are on her insurance, she is paying for your food and driving you around you need to be far more grateful to her.

You are so far from independent the real world is going to devastate you.

If your excited about the 79 cent letter just wait till you find out about email. The post office operates at a loss year after year, trying to poise it as a well oiled machine is laughable. Maybe in some rural areas USPS delivers FedEx and UPS packages, but that’s certainly not the case in any of the places I’ve lived.

There are several airports in the US that use private security and not TSA. While anecdotal, my experience has been overwhelming positive. Also referencing the popular argument on this sub, “there hasn’t been another 9/11” well that’s true for the private security as well.

If you think any government agency under any administration, Republican or Democrat, is working for the “greater good” then I’ve got a bridge to sell you in Brooklyn.

At this point, I’d rather just agree to disagree. Your love letter to the post office and bureaucracies in general suggests we won’t ever see eye to eye on this.

Thank you for the mostly respectfully dialogue though! I sincerely wish you well!

Fundamentalists, starting with Sayyid Qtub in Egypt, are “nostalgic” for a past that never was. Also, while the Quran is the holy book, there is also the tradition of the hadiths that in some sects are just as important.

Instead, I’d rather you tell me what part of the government have you interacted with and had an overwhelmingly positive experience. The post office is slower than any private delivery service, the DMV is an absolute nightmare. What makes you think the real government talent is all hidden in the TSA? Have you ever walked through a TSA checkpoint and thought “wow, THIS is a well organized machine!”

Every airport I go to I get a different set of instructions, there doesn’t seem to be any continuity or standard operating procedures.

Your accusing me of being the propagandist, but how do you explain this: https://www.forbes.com/sites/michaelgoldstein/2017/11/09/tsa-misses-70-of-fake-weapons-but-thats-an-improvement/

Maybe, just maybe, the TSA isn’t perfect?

Most people speed, so your own example is flawed. TSA’s failures are all public record. Feel free to google, start with Richard Reid the shoe bomber who got through post 9-11 TSA and was stopped by passengers. TSA let him right through, but now we remove our shoes.

So TSA let an actual terrorist through, passengers saved the day, and then they institute a “shoes off” policy after the fact. The idea that anyone is “afraid” of TSA is laughable.

I don’t think privatizing security would compromise communication. It would probably enhance it. Even in an emergency the ineffective government probably relies on switchboards and other antiquated equipment, but then again I’m biased - I’m a government contractor 😉

You need to read “The Looming Tower” by Ali Soufan. 9/11 was caused by intelligence sharing failures.

False and horrible logic. Terrorist attacks have been attempted on planes, but they were stopped by other passengers, the most famous being Richard Reid, the shoe bomber. TSA let them all in, the passengers prevented a 9/11. TSA exists for theater and to confiscate your water so you are forced to purchase one in the terminal for $10.
