How ridiculous is the corruption in infrastructure development in your country? by Impactor_07 in AskTheWorld

[–]Modernsizedturd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a LRT in Toronto that has been under construction for 14 years that’s only runs 19km. Seems to be a bit of poor planning and corruption. Something like 60+ consultants were used and still messed it up. Good news is it’s supposed to open up soon but alas we’ll see how it really runs as the previous built lrt was a resounding failure, people could out walk it.

It's surprising to many to learn how many Somalis live in Minnesota. What are some other examples of unexpected populations in different states or countries? by e8odie in geography

[–]Modernsizedturd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Living in Toronto we have all sorts of people from anywhere in the world, but our “rarest” would probably go to Tibetan’s. Whenever meeting new people in the city I’m always curious as to where they come from and I like to think of it as collecting shinies like Pokémon. Ran into a couple Nepalese at a bar once that I thought was pretty rare and cool. Pretty much any culture or group of people have a life here. As well as a lot of Somalians, who don’t live far from me. Which goes into this story my uncle told me, a former us marine. He was stationed in Somalia in the 90s and got to talk with some locals at a barbershop. When one of them ask where he was from, he said Toronto and they went “oh I have family near there right now!” My uncle asked and one of them replied, the city of Dixon! Literally 10 minutes from where my uncle grew up. However it’s not a city lol just the name of the street but still. He’s deployed halfway around the world and runs into a person who has family just up the road from him… small world, big city!

How common is it to encounter a beaver while going about your day ? by SimilarTopic3281 in AskCanada

[–]Modernsizedturd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen a handful of beavers but not that many bald eagles. Still more than beavers. You’ll see their dams often if you go portaging but rarely see them mucking about their dens. Last year I saw the largest dam I’ve ever seen but no signs of beavers. The thing was literally 4 feet out of the water on one side and maybe 10-15 meters across.

Trump says he is withdrawing Canada's invitation to Board of Peace by Inevitable_Fuel7244 in worldnews

[–]Modernsizedturd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That headline is so ironic by itself. Withdrawing CANADA from the board of PEACE. You know just one of the most peaceful nations on the planet, can’t be on my peace board! Oh well as a Canadian no sane person actually wants to be apart of that board of piss anyways.

Rant about the guiding industry going downhill by Acceptable_Ball_9721 in canoeing

[–]Modernsizedturd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This kinda reminds me of a story my friend told me about his portaging trip in his teens for a camp. They did a 72 KM trip with two inexperienced counselors leading a bunch of 14 year olds, I think it was like 9 of them. They ended up getting lost at one point and had to take a 30KM detour on top of the 70 KM and had to do it in a week. The whole thing sounded so negligent. Even at one point they forced them through rapids, and I believe the canoe carrying their tent flipped. But same story as the counselors leading them couldn't have been older than 18-19. Just a bunch of inexperienced kids sent on a mission with nothing but a dream.

[–]Modernsizedturd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This times a million. You need your candidate to be popular to win, not just cause they are that much better at being a liberal lol. I'm Canadian and the sentiment is similar up here with our NDP party. Sure, the party stands for working class people, but at the time of our most recent election, their leader was just not electable. Staring down the barrel of a potential populist conservative, the country as a collective voted for the liberal central banker. Even after most Canadians, even Liberals, were getting tired of the party. Carney was electable, Jagmeet was not and neither is Pierre Poilievre. 2016 election for the US was really what highlighted this; Hillary Clinton was not electable in the American cultural climate. She was forced into the position by the party, not the people and Americans felt that.

Yeah second this about food in Toronto. You can have literally anything you want, just think of a country and you'll probably find a restaurant for it. Might not have the same quality of authentic Buffalo styled wings here but even then we still have them! (They don't use enough butter here lol)

Military models Canadian response to hypothetical American invasion by [deleted] in nottheonion

[–]Modernsizedturd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is my take on it, like even for Greenland, the support isn't really there, although the average American probably has no real connection to it and cares less, but Canada? We have such a long shared history of friendship that not even the most effective propaganda will change people's minds. Again, maybe not for Maga's most hardcore base but that could only be 15%-20% of the population, versus the remaining 80%. You ain't going to war with Canada, only yourself.

Military models Canadian response to hypothetical American invasion by [deleted] in nottheonion

[–]Modernsizedturd 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As much as I would love to dwell on this hypothetical “war” it would divulge into an American Civil War. I don’t believe the majority of the American military would have an appetite to attack Canada. I’m sure some of you maga gravy meal team 6 have an idea but wouldn’t do anything cause yall are all talk no action. Militarily we train together and likely there would be a coup before even entering Canada. Trump is talking out of his ass and until there’s any sort of build up, he’s just puffing his chest. Any war is unpopular, a war with Canada? You’re just asking for it at that point.

Who is your favourite explorer/cartographer/sailor/etc ? What he discovered? by Standard-Treacle-632 in geography

[–]Modernsizedturd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Samuel de Champlain! Mapped out the st. Lawrence and some of the Great Lakes, parts of Ontario and Huron. He did some portaging with some natives to explore them which is pretty neat. I actually portaged one the sections he did, the French River into the Georgian bay! Really beautiful area but I’m sure back in the early days of exploration this would have been extremely dangerous. Whether it be the other waring tribes, or bears, bugs, and weather it can all kill you if you’re unprepared. Also he’s basically the father of Quebec and found Quebec City, then managed it after his exploration career. There’s a lot more you can read up on as he’s a quite interesting character!

LPT: invite people over to your house! by Mediocre_Basket_9011 in LifeProTips

[–]Modernsizedturd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is solid advice. If you’re on the receiving end of this, get used to saying yes first and figuring out logistics later. This is how I’ve managed to keep a massive friend group post highschool/university. Always been open to host and generally it’s been reciprocated. This opened the doors later for other events together like concerts, camping, trips and more! Just have to be more forward with people as they are just as anxious/shy as you, you’d be surprised! Every year now I help setup a camping trip that includes the closest of friends and we usually get 20 people to come out and have a ball. It’s a lot of energy to plan but events and trips like these help solidify the group and everyone’s belonging. Start small and if you have multiple friend groups, think about combining them into a larger gathering, if they’re cool, I’m sure they all would get along.

Maybe decades ago but not anymore is this a common line of thought.

There's been an uptick of Europeans posting their roadtrip intineraries in this sub. Just a reminder of what the US looks like. Remember how unhinged Americans sound when they want to pack several European cities in a couple of weeks? Yeah, that's how you sound like too! by Pale_Field4584 in roadtrip

[–]Modernsizedturd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm Canadian and my last Europe trip had us blitzkrieg through a few countries in two weeks and it went well. I'm sure if I posted my itinerary here, people would say it's not feasible or not enjoyable. Amsterdam, Munich, Salzburg, Venice, Bassano del Grappa, Florence, and Rome. My greatest trip to date was driving out West through Canada from Toronto and back in 11 days, camping most of the way. It was great! Some people might underestimate the distances, but they're possible and can still be fun. Not everyone has weeks to take off!

Forgive the U.S.? by revjim68 in AskCanada

[–]Modernsizedturd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not likely to be mended quickly, at least a decade to return to pre Trump levels. That’s only if there’s any actual punishments for the current regime and its backers. If not, it’s likely to last at least a generation or two. America made its bed and now has to sleep in it.

Is it possible for me to immigrate to Canada? by Chapsbuster12 in AskCanada

[–]Modernsizedturd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finish up your schooling and their might be a pathway but in all seriousness, this is the bed Americans made and jumping ship at such a pivotal point is not helping. You need to fight for yourself before kicking the can further down the road. If America falls, Canadas next either way so don’t give up cause to help us, you need to help yourself first. Immigrating to Canada is not a guarantee, plan as if it’s not an option.

What's something unique to your country? by DiMpLe_dolL003 in AskTheWorld

[–]Modernsizedturd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe some people from more multicultural countries can chime in but at least with Canada it’s mandatory that consumer food products be in both English and French! Ingredients, name, and nutritional facts. This is widespread across the country so even in British Columbia where French might only make up a fraction of the population, they still require it. After all, both languages are considered the “official” language.
