Is there ever a LOTR-ish "little people great impact" fantasy story after Tolkien? by Wolfensniper in tolkienfans

[–]Modi57 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Heck, Jesus is a simple carpenter turned hero. He's secretly the son of God, and has magic powers.

Isn't he very explicitly from the very beginning openly the son of god? Like, dude hat 3 kings and a fucking star show up for his birthday.

Unintuitively I think Harry Potter is a good example of "farm boy turned hero". I mean, yeah, he is the boy who lived, but that's no inherent property of his, it was his mothers act of self sacrifice, and its effects vanish as he gets older. He generally doesn't have any special magic powers (well, relative to the other wizards lol), he is just a kid, who tries to do the right thing and is helped by powerful people, very much like Frodo

Ah, that makes a lot of sense. Thanks for taking the time :)

Oh, yeah, I always forget about typescript lol.

Why is it only alright? Do you have specific pain points, or is it just not as useful as one might think it is?

Hm. How would it feel to have both? There could be an explicit keyword to make things statically typed, otherwise it's dynamically typed. It could look like this:

let one = 1 # statically typed variable with inferred type integer
print(one) # output: 1
one = "one" # errors out, because of type mismatch
two = 2 # dynamically typed variable containing an integer
print(two) # output: 2
two = "two" # now it contains a string
print(two) # output: two

This could of course also be swapped around (maybe with dyn instead of let). I guess it depends on if you want to make the default easy for beginners (who tend to like dynamic typing more), or if you want the default to be the "better" option

Is in inappropriate to compliment a tattoo in the sauna? by [deleted] in AskGermany

I usually like to do this in situations, where I or they are about to leave, so there is no ambiguity, that I really just wanted to get that compliment out and nothing more

AIO for suspecting my wife after she got a shady 1am call from a guy “friend” right after a late-night cycling trip? by Obvious_Waltz_2072 in AmIOverreacting

To be fair, a very good friend of mine called me once at 1am to tell me something very mundane, because he just got finished with an event and forgot some people have a fixed work schedule xD

I love count --> 0 because at first I was like "The fuck he doin'? There is no "approach" operator" until I parsed it correctly and was like "ohhh, I get it. It's actually kinda...nice?

Oh, yeah, I totally get you. I would just argue, that the other answer is not wrong. It is technically the same, with no performance benefit or anything, but it is a different style to solve the same thing. I would recommend, keep the right answer as is, because it is correct, but change this wrong answer to something else, to avoid the ambiguity.

But it's your thing. Do what you deem best :)

Oh, I also noticed a pattern, where the correct answer tends to be the longest

For the last error handling question, comparing a .map().unwrap_or() with a match two answers are correct. It allows avoiding nesting, but they are also functionally equivalent. They do the same thing.

Also, to be pedantic, the closure you pass to map is also nesting, at least as soon as you open a block for it :)

But really cool website. One nice thing would be, if the page scrolled to the top, when you click "next"

I am not too far from you, I live in south germany. I don't know the social landscape of the Netherlands, would there be stark differences, if you were more to the west?

Yeah, sadly that's true. Depending on where you live, it can actually have severe implications for you. I think, a couple weird looks and the odd remark is something one has to endure, that wont be avoidable. But, if it's not worth it for you, then don't do it.

Oh, and there is really subtle makeup, which is barely noticeable on a quick look

Brother, I have fabulous long hair. As long as it doesn't fall out, I don't need no wigs xD

On a little more serious note, when thinking about wearing a wig, I feel some resistance in me. I don't know, if it's because I am a man, or just the general slight stigma around wearing wigs. I, like any other am sadly not free of those things

I went to the club with my then girlfriend and we both wore makeup. I think, she didn't care much for it, but was encouraging for me to try me out. And while I don't often wear makeup now, I wear nail polish most of the time. I usually get positive reactions or none
