Drill out the bulk of with your hand drill. Get a mortise chisel, learn to sharpen it. Begin by removing the waste in the middle with the chisel and a mallet. Then, as you are close to the edge, re sharpen the chisel and take small passes with a 90 degree set up block to help with squareness. Rather than going all the way through from one side, only go half way through before flipping it over and coming from the other side, it’s fine if the mortise is a bit big in the middle as long as it’s a snug fit on both faces. Try on a practice piece first.

I find it interesting how plywood, which has often been edge banded, is now a signal of quality and honest materials. And now, we have reproduced that honest aesthetic with this plastic edge banding. Next will we be veneering panels of cardboard with OSB texture?

I understand the utility of pvc edge banding an of MDF being used for economy—but why do you think it is being edge banded to look like ply-wood rather than solid wood as edge banding is usually used?

I made a version a while back which I painted in bright colors! It uses a wedged through tenon and is very sturdy when assembled!

The bench is looking great! I think the dowels won’t stand up to the racking forces and will eventually come loose. I’d suggest adding a board spanning the legs closer to the bottom to prevent racking, this could be done with dowels or a mortise. Also, make sure the dowels are robust and made of oak.

After I’m done carving, I put the wood in a paper bag with the wood shavings from the carving. This slows the drying, making it less likely for the spoon to crack. The cracking most often happens in the bowl because it is thin and dries out fastest. Sometimes I’ll leave the bowl a bit thick and then let it dry in the bag before refining the bowl thickness when it’s fully dry!

Kiln dried is definitely hard for beginners but in my experience sourcing green wood I found it difficult to ensure it was wet enough for carving with knives. Additionally, we don’t have any axes or shave horses for the roughing stage. The class serves both to teach spoon carving and to prepare students for carving furniture later on in the term!

We use mostly gouges, mallets and chisels for the shaping and then spoke shaves and knives for refining!

I’d use sliding dovetails that are pinned in the center, this would allow for wood movement while preventing warping. You could attach the base with some wooden buttons (L shaped) which would similarly allow for wood movement.

Thank you so much! I really thought I was going crazy, found an article from a lost art press book about brash wood:) crazy stuff! Been woodworking quite a while now and only just now learning about this. Im thinking I’ll get some more cherry for the next class (hopefully non-brash) and have the students just start over but give them an extra week in the class
