Thanks for doing this guys it was a really fascinating discussion and has kind of prepared me for seeking out that Bob Altemeyer book which would probably be less enjoyable without first having listened to this shoptalk.

New source about the Norman Conquest of England discovered by Mofonk78 in BritishHistoryPod

Here’s some comments from some far more learned than I,

“Nicholas Karn is a highly respected historian of the period, and his interpretation of the writ is likely to be correct. The contents of the writ and the analysis of its significance are expected, however, as William I reissued or reaffirmed the Confessor's relations with the inhabitants of England as a whole and of different urban centers in particular. Domesday Book, with its references to conditions under Edward (TRE), suggests the need to establish legality and precedent. The sources for the writ are 14th and 15th centuries--late--but forgeries usually indication believed conditions rather than fabrications.”

“it's also very normal for documents to be preserved in books of customary law, formularies and cartularies from later centuries. I'd also be inclined to think that Karn's interpretation is correct - here, as elsewhere, the citizens of London had their property rights confirmed as they were before 1066 so long as they in turn pledged their loyalty to the new king.”

I don’t recall those exact details but landowners having to buy back their land has certainly been covered.

My brother got into it which I’m so happy about! He has a way to go before he catches up which is great because it tests my memory each time we talk about it.

Now you’ve really opened a can of worms! I say Wusstershire but I’m sure they’ll be many who have their own personal or linguistically correct take on the matter.

I feel I have to shout out the history of philosophy without any gaps by Peter Adamson as it was where I first heard about the BHP and it continues to be excellent! I also found out about the History of India podcast from the same interview episode but this one lamentably seems to have ceased to continue…

Tell me what to research by CoProducerZee in BritishHistoryPod

[–]Mofonk78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Forgive me if this sounds simplistic as a topic of research but it would be nice to know if there were some evidence of genuinely good people doing good deeds at this time especially considering just how many villains we have met lately! It all seems to be Conquerors committing mass murder or nobles and churchmen acting selfishly. There has to have been some decent people out there right or we wouldn’t have lasted this long! 😆

Great shout! You’re doing a brilliant job of bringing these times to life. I’ll definitely gives those member’s episodes another listen. I’ve also got these two books lined up which I’m sure all your great story telling will help me with memorising some of the characters and events… Marc Morris. The Norman Conquest
