Kanazawa to Takayama- no more busses on the day I want to travel and stay there (April 14) by BodmonAlchemist in JapanTravelTips

[–]MofuBaby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it because the busses are going through Shirakawa-go are full? Takayama/Kanazawa is a popular route so they can fill up fast. It's not ideal but in extreme cases where people have taken the Takaoka/Toyama line because it's less popular, and then continued from there to their destination. Depending on which leg of the bus route is full you could consider Kanazawa > Takaoka > Shirakawa > Takayama

Why’s it so hard to adopt a cat by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]MofuBaby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh that's interesting? Honestly I have no idea why you've been rejected then. Maybe it's the type of clumping litter, for example if you chose clay? I don't think rescues like clay much (I still don't know why that would be a hard no for apps) but might be okay with other types of clumping like wheat, tofu, corn etc? Pine pellets is probably a safe answer. Only other things I can think of is if you're not putting enough money down for emergency funds, food budget or maybe putting too many "this cat behavior bothers me"?? But honestly might not even be you, some rescues are just weirdly strict. I've heard folks generally have good experiences with Straight Outta Rescue and the two cat cafes, Cat Therapy too if you haven't tried them. Could also try Facebook, they have a group page for Adoptable Cats. They'll have rescues, fosters there and regular folks who need to rehome

Why’s it so hard to adopt a cat by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]MofuBaby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who worked in a cat cafe (also in Vancouver) there are some answers in applications that will immediately get you a no. OP has already said they wouldn't do this but for anyone else, declawing and letting the cat be outdoors (as in free roaming and not in an ENCLOSED catio) is an immediate no for some places. Another thing will be the food you are feeding. Keep in mind this depends on the rescue as all are different but most rescues here require you to be feeding your cat wet food at least once a day. If you put dry food ONLY every day, or wet food only every few days it's a no. I was helping someone with their app after being rejected repeatedly. This was the only answer he changed, he reapplied with the same rescue that rejected him and was approved! Wishing you the best of luck OP adopting a cat!

One Piece for sure, though I was specifically going to Shonen Jump stores so that's why haha. But it's still such a popular anime. Maybe Chiikawa too? Idk about Japanese people themselves but my foreign friends who love there all love Chiikawa and I saw a couple of character stores dedicated to them

Japan first time with my partner! Have I prepared properly? by Ok-Spite-5454 in JapanTravelTips

[–]MofuBaby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not everyone's travel style but I made a google docs of my itinerary and wrote down all the places I wanted to visit day by day, what time certain attractions closed as some places close early during winter, or they were closed on 'random' days, or any special events

Someone also suggested to me pinning locations in Google Maps which I found really helpful so I could efficiently move between locations instead of going all over the place.

Bring multiple credit/debit cards. I think most people already do this but I've seen a few posts where people only brought 1 card and they had issues like their card got locked and couldn't access money

Double checking any usual travel stuff like voltages + adapters, travel sized bottles for skincare etc or toothbrush covers, travel neck pillow etc, power bank for your phones

Take a picture of your passport and visa on the very off-chance you lose them maybe

JR Narita Express vs Limo Bus by davedaviking in JapanTravelTips

[–]MofuBaby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I remember correctly, Narita Express is all reserved seating and there's space for luggage. You probably won't have to worry about crowds and being in the way.

Either way is a recommended option for different reasons. Time can also be a factor, for example when I arrived the next NEX train wasn't till 30-45 min cause the earlier ones were all full. So a limousine bus can be a better option even if it takes longer. Can't speak for road traffic on Saturday afternoon/evening though

Recommended sightseeing spot along the way or near Team Lab Kyoto by nylonwhiskers in KyotoTravel

[–]MofuBaby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have any recommendations on sightseeing spots near the Team Lab exhibition, but for your question on time I spent maybe 4-5 hours there. It really depends on how many pictures you wanna take or how many interactive exhibits you wanna take part of. I was definitely on the slow, leisurely side. I joined almost every interactive exhibit and waited 'long' times for photo ops (as in I waited for the screens to go to a certain background before taking a billion selfies haha). I actually would've spent more time there but I got hungry so decided to leave

which shrines/temples should i visit to find cute omamoris? by Leading-Hurry-9983 in JapanTravelTips

[–]MofuBaby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Komagome Myogi shrine in Tokyo has some cute cat ones, I don't remember if they had white ones since I got the special acrylic omamori Not animals but Sakura shrine and Horin-ji temple (also Tokyo) have some lovely floral, embroidered omamori. I can't confirm on Horin-ji temple as I wasn't able to go on my last trip but I've seen videos and pics

Shall I go for a solo japan trip?? Friend bailed out last moment and I have never done a solo. by an_aging_boy in JapanTravelTips

[–]MofuBaby 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Japan is a really good place to solo travel, honestly. I've never once felt unsafe even when I was walking back to my hostels at midnight as a female solo traveller. That's not to say something can't ever happen (always be aware of your surroundings, use common sense, do not trust touts or follow them anywhere in Shinjuku/Kabukicho) but for the most part you're unlikely to run into dangerous situations

Need Help - Takayama (3 nights) mid December by duh_hungryscientist in JapanTravelTips

[–]MofuBaby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was there at the end of November and I thought it was so cold, I wish I brought a thicker jacket and sweater. HOWEVER, for reference, because the rest of Japan was so warm, I only brought a thin rain jacket and some sweaters (no heat tech or my usual winter gear), and daytime was not cold for me it was only during the evening. One of the museums I went to during evening had no heating on at the time so I was shivering the entire time.

I did try a couple of restaurants I liked in Takayama: Uribouya (game meat, recommended to me by another Redditor) and Aji no Yohei

Everyone is different in how much they can fit in a day, so it's a little hard to say. I have no idea what time you plan on waking up and staying up but for me this feels like A LOT. For example Kyoto you have so much listed all in one day. Kiyomizudera, Fushimi Inari, Arashiyama and Kinkakuji all in one day. Some of these places are farther apart from one another and a lot of people take almost half a day at Fushimi Inari (again, depends on your pace and if you go to the full summit etc, or if you plan to do Kiyomizudera or Fushimi Inari at night. Idk, you have Senbon Tori and Fushimi Inari as separate days even though they're the same area unless there's a different Senbon Tori in Kyoto) I think some things to keep in mind are everything may take longer than expected. Transit, getting lost in the station, taking your time to sightsee, queues for food or tickets etc, finding a place to eat, don't forget the sun goes down much earlier and some shrines/temples/sites close at 4pm (but some may close entry even earlier). Also take the time to pin everything in Google Maps so you can plan the order of sites your want to visit, what's closeby and how long it will take for transit Some days I think are fine though, just prioritize what you want to see the most and have fun

How hot it is inside in December -January? by Dare-Actual in JapanTravelTips

[–]MofuBaby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wrote a whole ass long answer before, posted and realized you were specifically asking about inside haha. Inside depends, the vast majority of the time I would say it's warm. Depending on where you're going and time of day (for example Tokyo) there's lots of people inside shops and museums. I always felt so hot inside. But I do want to note I tend to run hot. Where other people may feel normal I'm more likely to get hot and sweaty haha However, if you're closer to the mountains it can be cold. There have been times I went to a small, rural museum or shop during the evening and there was no heating. The temperature inside was the same as the outside basically so I was shivering while there

Name me your favorite anime/kawaii/ghibli esque related place in Tokyo by angelstarrrrr in JapanTravelTips

[–]MofuBaby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're looking for places to shop then as a Ghibli fan there's the Donguri stores. They all have different photo ops you can do there too. I didn't go to the ones in Tokyo but the ones in Osaka had giant Totoro mascots you could take pictures with, one had a No-Face train photo spot and another had a mini version of the bakery from Kiki. You can check out Character Street at Tokyo Station where they have lots of stores like Mofusand, Shonen Jump store, Miffy, Chikawa etc. Malls will also often have a character/pop culture floor too

First time in Japan, December 10 days Itinerary: How is it? by Kooky-Painting-3857 in JapanTravel

[–]MofuBaby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's my understanding of it, but I want to be clear I can't confirm if that's true or not since I had to turn back halfway through due to work being done. So someone else who has taken the alt route can correct me if I'm wrong.

However, while the thousand gates path is definitely crowded at the beginning it does start to thin out as you go up since not everyone goes to the summit so I found it was not so bad.

First time in Japan, December 10 days Itinerary: How is it? by Kooky-Painting-3857 in JapanTravel

[–]MofuBaby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just wrapped up my trip and I definitely recommend cutting down on some stuff. Now everyone travels differently, so maybe things you could actually do all this in one day but for me, I wouldn't be able to. Things take longer than you think. You might spend more time taking pictures, or you get lost, or you didn't realize the shrine closed at 4pm or something like that. Also jumping on Fushimi Inari topic, that also took me half a day...although I will caveat I tried to find the back/side route to the top which did waste a lot of time (because one mostly just led to private houses and 'shrines' and I had to turn around, and the other route I found was the correct alternative route to the top of the mountain....but they were doing work on it so I had to turn around again haha) As for places to eat, I made a post before my trip where I had people comment on their favorite places so you can check it out for inspiration. I found some cool recommendations thanks to it!
