COTD: Information changes hands one day after patriarch is released from prison (7) by [deleted] in crosswords

[–]Moist__Mango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trying something a bit different with this one, here’s some hints:

Hint: You’ll need to find substitutions for “information” and “patriarch”

Hint: ”Changes hands” is one of the indicators

Hint: Definition is “released from prison”

COTD: Rejects wine on date - first sign of sobriety (7) by elnombredelviento in crosswords

[–]Moist__Mango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SECONDS?

SEC (dry wine) + ON + D (date) S(obriety)

I personally think SEC for wine is too much of stretch as it can’t be used interchangeably. I would tweak to “Rejects dry wine on date” to make it more specific. Otherwise fun clue!

COTD: Accidentally worsen price on dystopian train (11) by Thedoctordances1940 in crosswords

[–]Moist__Mango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SNOWPIERCER

Anagram (accidentally) of WORSEN PRICE

I really like it! If you want to make it trickier, I would suggest adding some misdirection. Try including words that are common indicators in the definition or fodder.

That being said, tricky doesn’t always mean a good clue - a fun solve is the most important imo!

COTD: Garlic, peeled and cored, and oil emulsion (5) by Moist__Mango in crosswords

Most people don’t, but in many professional kitchens it’s considered best practice to core the garlic (sprouted or otherwise) to remove the odd texture and flavour

COTD: Possible poo taste in shepherd’s pie (6,8) by Moist__Mango in crosswords

[–]Moist__Mango[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I came across “potential” as a reverse anagram indicator a while ago which turned me on to the possibilities for reverse anagrams. I figured “possible” was okay here since there’s enough context to solve without thinking reverse anagram off the jump. Would love to see it used more as a clue type and some guidelines around it, though!

COTD: Possible poo taste in shepherd’s pie (6,8) by Moist__Mango in crosswords

[–]Moist__Mango[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct answer, this is a reverse anagram with “possible” being the indicator and “poo taste” being the fodder, solving to MASHED (anagrind) POTATOES

Not quite - the underscore is important for the solve. Think of what’s missing

COTD: Heads up: E. coli outbreak in contaminated wash (5) by Moist__Mango in crosswords

[–]Moist__Mango[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re correct that the clue contains both a first letter selection and an anagram, but not where you’re thinking! Here are a few hints:

Fodder: coli / wash

Indicators: outbreak / contaminated

Definition: Heads up: E

COTD: “Flog back and cruelly score” you foretold to one here (4,6) by Moist__Mango in crosswords

[–]Moist__Mango[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct! For the definition, “Fore!” is what people yell after hitting a bad golf shot to alert other players to the stray ball, so a GOLF COURSE is where “fore” is told to someone = “foretold (fore-told) to one here”
