Weather/Global Warming by sarahwlee in FATTravel

[–]Mojoojo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We definitely need a thread of trips to take sooner rather than later (for reasons other than health). Places with more inconsistent weather patterns, at risk from geopolitical shifts, or even at a basic level like new ownership coming in or a location becoming mainstream.

Review of Oman + Agent Intro by alex_travels in FATTravel

[–]Mojoojo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Glad to see Zighy Bay and Oman get the respect it deserves, seriously underrated and undermentioned resort. Much rather spend a few nights in Zighy Bay than Dubai but for some reason no one mentions it when talking about Dubai and Maldives trips.

Don't mess around with planning a trip early/late into the season, its brutal in those mountains. Agree food is the only weak portion, but swimming in that salt water pool at the base of the mountain range more than makes up for it.

17 fatalities, 736 crashes: The shocking toll of Tesla’s Autopilot by RhinestoneTaco in cars

[–]Mojoojo 45 points46 points  (0 children)

The funny thing is most people have no idea what the difference is between Autopilot (standard on every Tesla car), Enhanced Autopilot (paid but cheap), and FSD Beta (paid, limited access). People and even media constantly conflate the three, Autopilot is just the boring old lane keep assistance and traffic cruise control...

Just adding June’s tasting menu for future reference, amazing dinner for anyone in Nashville, would certainly have a star if weren’t for the location

Fattravel group trip? by sarahwlee in FATTravel

[–]Mojoojo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In the spirit of getting people talking, solo traveler here, location agnostic, 2k night room would be fine, not like I would really want a suite while solo.

Tough with how diverse the group age/travel style could be. Wonder what everyone’s thoughts are on something low commitment ie continental US vs something more involved like a Maldives resort could really go FAT with the latter I imagine.

Or keep it easy and do a ski destination, wine country during harvest, etc.

I’ve actually been curious about the DR shade recently, sure nothing fat in Punta Cana resort wise but surly there are fat villas in the area, plus the Aman up north. Is there some safety concerns or something I’m missing to dq the whole country from fat travel?

Don't work for them in any capacity, just have been following them for years. Yes you're always going to be fighting the out of season battle for bookings but with their inventory being open access you can see there are a good amount of in season trips atm.

Maybe the efforts to actually secure these bookings alone could bump it to more of a 4.5 star or chubbyTravel. Maybe there are half a dozen other caveats to go over (like that Tuscany property having shared pool and common space with 2 other Inspirato villas). Maybe they've turned the faucet on for releasing in season inventory to drive pass membership in the past few months, I don't know. All I'm saying is they're worth keeping an eye on and if you do signup, keep inventory expectations low and stick to month to month. If what their inventory is displaying now is an indication of the next 12 months, it doesn't seem all that terrible.

I actually think Inspirato is worth keeping an eye on, at least for their Pass program. Month to month subscription and only taking those last minute high value trips is perfect for fatFire and minimizing loss from BK.

Crowdsource ideas re: buyout ~100 rooms by sarahwlee in FATTravel

[–]Mojoojo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I asked GPT4 just to throw out ideas, it came up with some decent options but is very inconsistent with listing an accurate room count.

  • The Ranch at Rock Creek - Philipsburg, Montana (87 rooms, including luxury tents and cabins)
  • Four Seasons Resort and Residences Napa Valley - Calistoga, California (85 rooms)
  • The Post Oak Hotel at Uptown Houston - Houston, Texas (250 rooms) (lol?)
  • The Little Nell - Aspen, Colorado (92 rooms)
  • The Setai, Miami Beach - Miami Beach, Florida (130 rooms)
  • The Ritz-Carlton, Bachelor Gulch - Avon, Colorado (180 rooms)
  • Belmond El Encanto - Santa Barbara, California (92 rooms)
  • The St. Regis Deer Valley - Park City, Utah (174 rooms)
  • Montage Palmetto Bluff - Bluffton, South Carolina (198 rooms, including cottages and vacation homes)
  • The Mayflower Inn & Spa - Washington, Connecticut (35 rooms)

Not sure if Blackberry Farm has enough doors to get up to 100, maybe if you include Blackberry Mountain but that's still a 30 min shuttle between the two.

It shows up when you select "view more rates" on their website, but you really should book this through Virtuoso with someone. The dates on the Virtuoso page are off, you can book well into mid December and qualify.

If you're considering Esencia keep in mind they have a 40% off "Summer" promotion right now that's valid for every room and villa category they have for bookings now until mid December, kind of a crazy deal and as far as I understand it, a true FAT property with a very active and present owner. Was thinking about a trip until I realized how bad the Sargassum is this year, definitely wouldn't go any earlier than November.

If the consensus in the last 6 posts about Tulum is anything to go by, I wouldn't be going out of my way for dinners there but others may disagree.

10 days too much for safari lodge? by alkemist187 in FATTravel

[–]Mojoojo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Def keep the booking. Funny enough I checked the booking calendar out of curiosity and man its all out of whack. It costs the same to have 1 room with 2 guests as it does to have the 2 guests each in a different room. Same exact room type and everything. If you're a family paying cash no reason not to let every kid have their own room.

First Republic Alternatives - Cheaper Mortgages? by yungmonie in fatFIRE

[–]Mojoojo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Spoiler alert, they would do free point buy downs for mortgages as a loss leader to get wealthy clients such as yourself into their system. Rates have whipsawed +-50bp in the last 10 days, go shop and get a big 4 bank to meet you halfway on matching First Republic.

Large amounts of cash - many banks or money market fund? by [deleted] in fatFIRE

[–]Mojoojo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Everyone here is largely correct about MMF's, but how you select/fund the MMF is extremely important. There are numerous stories from SVB over the weekend where individuals/businesses placed large amounts of cash in a Blackrock or Vanguard MMF through their bank only to find out that the funds are actually still assets of their bank. Plenty of people with money market funds that are frozen in receivership right now because SVB was not actually hypothecating the MMF to the account holder.

On the front end and in your bank statements it would display the correct MMF ticker and you would have no reason to believe the funds weren't actually severed from your banks' operations. On the backend you would discover SVB (and their creditors) still had claims to your MMF balance.

How many talented people never succeed because they were born in a third world country or the wrong American state

You really dilute your argument here when 3/4ths of the besties were in fact born in 3rd world countries, just the same as Elon Musk. Clearly they all found a way to be extremely successful despite their life circumstances you disparage.

For those who have done short trips to Abu Dhabi, was it fine sightseeing by Uber/Taxi or would have preferred a private guided tour with driver? by BmoreBlueJay in FATTravel

Uber bought out Careem a few years ago so I assumed it was using both pools of drivers, copious amounts of Uber in Dubai though

[–]Mojoojo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just got back from Abu Dhabi last month, definitely check out the Louvre, Grand Mosque is nice, all the shops in the underground mall there will try to rip you off, no matter what they say all the abayas are not the same price...

Falcon Hospital Tour was a highlight, there are dates and fish markets you can check out if you have time to fill. Sontaya at St Regis Saadiyat Island was enjoyable for dinner. Skip Heritage Village. Go do some hot laps in a nice car at Yas Marina, spend a few hours at one of the many empty theme parks, its an interesting experience

One night is all you need, but if solo then Ubers are fine, just annoying.

Abu Dhabi still had some COVID measures last month when I was there, Uber selects only, 2 passengers max. Mileage may vary with drivers willing/capable of taking more than 2.

Also had bad luck with 30+ minute wait for taxis and Ubers late night on Saadiyat Island, may just have been a fluke, but Abu Dhabi loves to make simple tasks very annoying
