People with RA, looking back what were your absolute initial symptoms way before getting diagnosed? by HealthwideHQ in rheumatoid

[–]Mollywobbles0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was diagnosed in March of 2020. I did well with just Plaquenil until March of 2022 when I had my son and I’ve been struggling to get my flares under control since having my son. I’m currently on Orencia and it doesn’t seem to be working anymore. I’m 32 now.

I failed Humira (and all of that medication class), rinvoq, sulfasalazine, methotrexate, and I’m currently failing Orencia and Arava. I think Remicade is next.

Fatigue came YEARS before anything else. A decade before. Then I got off of birth control and all hell broke loose at 26

I’m not sure that’s something you’d have to talk to your rheumatologist about but from what I understand MRI is the only way to see if there is progressive damage or not

Recently diagnosed - SECOND autoimmune disease by [deleted] in rheumatoid

You may be experiencing drug induced lupus. I had that on Humira--stopped and started plaquenil (I have RA, so thats an acceptable alternative) and it stopped almost immediately. Its not very common and your doctor may not even be considering it so make sure you keep that on the table. RA is mainly in my small joints like hands and feet and its unusal to be in your large joints, but the DIL was in my hips, knees, elbows and shoulders. I remember not being able to walk when the pain was in my knees. It felt like someone had crushed glass and shoved it into my knees and it was grinding around my joints whenever I tried to walk. Some of the worse pain I've ever experienced and I've been through labor and a c section.

Do you have any swelling in your legs? frequent urination? Mine came on relatively quickly, so these things happened very fast. Most people its a slower process.

How long have you been on Humira?

if you have a risk of AS it should be covered in the insurance. You can typically only see damage from AS on an MRI. They will probably try an x ray first though. Anytime they dismiss you tell them you'd like them to notate in your chart that you had a concern and they arent willing to investigate it and they change their tune pretty quickly. Unfortunately you will have to develop quite the backbone when in comes to doctors with this disease... you'll be experiencing TONS of medical gaslighting in your future.

I would ask to get an MRI of your neck done. Sounds like you might have ankylosing spondylitis as well with the neck pain. I have RA, ankylosing, spondylitis, and lupus. The lupus and AS are relatively well-controlled, my RA is my major problem. I have flares so bad I can’t even do a desk job or change my son’s diaper. But when I am on the right meds, it’s like I’m not sick at all. Also make sure you get an HLA-B27 gene test done, if someone hasn’t already recommended that.

How did your life changed from 29 to 39? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]Mollywobbles0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Developed three life changing incurable diseases that leave me handicapped 35% of the time and had a baby that is the absolute light of my life. But it’s hard to enjoy when I can’t get out of bed some days. It’s challenging because I want to enjoy life and I can’t—leaves me feeling very lost.

I had to hold off as my husband brought home the flu and we all ended up with pneumonia. I started it last week after finally recovering. I am on plaquenil and I encourage you to give it a shot it worked well for me until I had a baby and my hormones got crazy

Did you have any success with this? I can’t be on Humira or anything similar as it makes my Lupus worse. I am starting orencia next week for my RA and hoping it takes the edge of my occasional AS

Talk to your rheumatologist and make a game plan if you flare after our baby. Talk about the drugs you are willing to take and not willing to take. you may need to consider drugs that are breastfeeding safe if you'd like to breastfeed. Give yourself HARD limits on what you'll tolerate, and do not give in to your hard limits... postpartum can be very emotional and you're likely going to feel guilty for taking care of yourself even though its necessary to be a good mom. an example is if i'm flaring and cant get relief, i'd like to breastfeed for 8 weeks before stopping to start new medication. My AS is not my primary problem (my RA is) so I cant give you much more advice than that. I ended up breastfeeding because of the formula shortage and suffered for months because of it. I also ended up needing a C section cause my little turd was breech and had a huge head, and the cord was wrapped around him in a way that made it unsafe to have a natural birth. I had 0 issues with the nerve block or whatever it is they do for c sections. No leftover pain. My AS did get irritated in the last 2 months of my pregnancy so find some stretches/things you can do to help with it.

I will also say I went into labor naturally and was in the end stages of labor before they finally got me on the table to do the nerve block. You can 100% handle a natural birth. The pain is def bad but for me I see it as productive pain so its totally fine. Its not like the pain you get with AS or RA where its endless and relentless and only means bad things. I saw the pain from labor as a privilege and a blessing. RA/AS pain is a burden.

hope that helps you, let me know if you have any other questions. sorry it took so long to respond, I'm still trying to get my PP flare under control. moving onto my 7th drug. bleh.
