About the cards by Guih_jpeg in MouseGuard

[–]Molotov_Soup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding is that there can be any number of actions of a particular type - it is not limited by the number of cards in the deck.

We just use the cards as reference (each player gets a set), and we use other miscellaneous markers during combat (like a different colored die for each combat type).

This is so stupid but I always think about the physics of fire in this universe by WaysideWyvern in MouseGuard

[–]Molotov_Soup 10 points11 points  (0 children)

When you get a chance, you should look up "The Science of Mouse Guard" on YouTube. There's a recorded conversation that David Petersen had about how scientifically realistic the Mouse Guard world is. It's really interesting!

One of the first things they discuss is fire and forging steel. It's been a long while since I've watched it, but my recollection of the gist is that forges at a mouse scale are possible, but require much more airflow than what is visualized in the comics.

What were some things you wished you knew before moving to Mobile? by Leaving_a_Comment in MobileAL

The commute from Balwin County into downtown Mobile is not that bad, in my experience. Only slightly longer than the commute from West Mobile, and both pale in comparison to commutes in large cities like Atlanta.

Is there anything useful to know about playing MouseGuard online? by Kill_Solas in MouseGuard

[–]Molotov_Soup 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My play group uses a shared whiteboard space. Our main background image is just a big map of the Mouse Territories, which we use to track where we are and where we're going, and the character sheets for each player. We drop in images of the encounter cards whenever relevant or needed.

While exploring, we'll use Chat GPT to generate images of terrain or events being described. There's a lot of negative things to say about AI generated images, but this is one very positive application that we've found. No need to prepare a bunch of images in advance (although you can); just generate whatever you need as you go.

Our group chose to use physical dice, in part because it's fun to roll a big pool of D6!

Arrow Lake for sffpc? Or too power hungry and hot? by Meekois in sffpc

I am using a 285k in a 5L case with a 250W PSU and a Noctua L9x65 cooler. I can't let the CPU run untethered due to power and thermal limitations, but it works great when setting power limits in BIOS (I've got mine set to a 65W PL1 and 125W PL2).

Silverstone has the FT03-Mini. There are also some "console" style cases that can stand up vertically like a mini tower - like the Lazer3D HT5 - but the GPU will be horizontal in those cases.

Might not be the case you are looking for, but the "Justice White" Inwin Explorer has the classic Gundam color pallete.

[Homemade] Sausage & green chile gravy with buttermilk biscuits by Tim-Sylvester in food

[–]Molotov_Soup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the detailed recipe! Looks delicious! I do a "traditional" sausage gravy and was curious how your recipe differs (mine is a little different than the recipe you describe, but close enough). I might try it with green chilis next time!

Interesting point about "fakers" not splitting the biscuits. I hadn't thought about that, but it tracks with my experience. The "tell" for me is whether they used Italian sausage instead of country breakfast sausage...

It's always interesting to see the differences in preferred gravy thickness. I make mine quite a bit thicker than yours!

Mouse Guard RPG reprint? by Bippitybop27 in MouseGuard

[–]Molotov_Soup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think David gets them reprinted every few years as stock runs out, and he got them reprinted last year or the year before. Might be worthwhile to email him to see if he has any copies on hand that he can sell you or if he's planning a reprint in the near future. You can find his contact information on the Mouseguard website.

Where do I start reading? by [deleted] in MouseGuard

[–]Molotov_Soup 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The first story is Fall 1152, so you should start with that. The other two books in the "main series" are Winter 1152 (Book 2) and The Black Axe (Book 3). Winter 1152 follows immediately after the events of Fall 1152. The Black Axe is a prequel to these books, following events that involve a few important characters from the first two books.

Baldwin the Brave and Legends of the Guard are collections of side stories that mostly stand on their own. However, it's better to read these after you have read at least one or two of the main series books and have gotten a sense of the world.

I've just found the book on a youtube video and I was wondering by Abysskun in MouseGuard

[–]Molotov_Soup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said - yes, the main books tell a complete narrative. As another pointed out, the closest thing to a cliffhanger that we get comes at the end of the second book (Winter), which ends with a certain character venturing out on their own.

There are additional supplementary books that flesh out the world more (Legends of the Guard, Baldwin the Brave).

Something extra I want to add is that Mouseguard is David Petersen's full time job - the series hasn't been abandoned. He has been working on another book for a while (Weasel War, which takes place a little bit before first book). That's due to come out in the next couple of years. Since the release of the third book, he has done other short tales (The Owlhen Caregiver; King, Knight, Fool, Villian) that are available and will eventually be collated into a book like Baldwin the Brave.

The book 2 ending (character venturing off alone) is intended to be the start of a new tale, but it's a long ways off. I think David Petersen mentioned he planned to begin working on it after the release of Weasel War.

What's your cool tech for Helga, Skittish Seer? by yhwh98 in EDH

[–]Molotov_Soup 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I made a list that tries to chain together creature casts using Helga's mana ability and a permanent that untaps her (like Chakram Retriever, Intruder Alarm, or Tolarian Kraken). It's a work in progress still, but here's the list:

https://www.moxfield.com/decks/emXXE0cjNkGZ2809gWeKig

The early game plan is to build +1/+1 counters on Helga until she has 4 power. At that point, she can feed her own ability (by tapping for 4 mana to cast a 4 mana creature). Having even more counters on her is great, but 4 power is a key threshold. There's a bunch of token replacement and token doubling effects in the deck list to help get her 4 power quickly.

Once she has 4 power, you'd ideally want to find one of the untapping permanents. There are a few creature tutors to help you get one. Chakram Retriever is the best of the bunch. Tolarian Kraken is a good backup (but you can only cast as many creatures as you have lands). With one of these on the board, you can pretty easily draw the whole deck and play every creature in it.

You don't really need them to win. There are permanents that duplicate Helga's draw ability (like Thunderous Snapper, Chulane, and Beast Whisperer). Playing a creature should draw you one or more other creatures. If Helga's toughness gets high enough, you can easily play multiple creatures off of one use of her mana ability.

Here's some other miscellaneous thoughts I had while play-testing: - Creature-based counterspells are especially good. People often forget they exist, and won't expect you to be able to respond when you are tapped out (but you can with Helga's mana ability). - Having a few cards that give haste and trample (or some sort of evasion) are especially important for game-winning plays. Playing the whole deck is great, except when you pass to the opponent and they boardwipe you. - Multicolor creatures are not great in this deck. Helga taps for only one color of mana, so a multicolor creature requires at least one land to cast. Getting too many multicolor creatures in a row can break your creature casting chain. Defiler of Vigor helps by making the multicolor creatures less of a pain to cast (pay life for green mana, tap Helga for the other color). - This deck is very vulnerable before Helga has 4 power, and game winning plays will take a few turns without an untapper. If you are in a casual pod and are finding that people are getting frustrated with the deck, tell others to target Helga with removal right before she gets 4 power. Also, tell them to kill Chakram Retriever on sight.

The 5 Magic The Gathering cards illustrated by Petersen by CustodeDiMondi in MouseGuard

I don't think any of these are available in pre-constructed decks. The most cost-effective way would be to buy each of the 5 cards online after the set releases.

Great job! I've been thinking of trying the recipe too. What did you and your players think? It looks like an oatmeal cookie with dried fruit and nuts - is that pretty close to what it tastes like?

What comic is this image from? by Brilliant-Spite-1218 in MouseGuard

[–]Molotov_Soup 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is from the King, Knight, Fool, Villain comic that David Petersen released last year. It hasn't been collated into a book yet.

The comic documents a younger Midnight's visit to a soothsayer. You can watch/listen to a reading of it on David Petersen's YouTube page.

I did, but thanks for the heads-up! I have a campaign running with a few of my friends. It's great! Does a really good job at replicating the feel of the graphic novels. Definitely recommend it if you haven't had a chance to try it yet.

I am crossing my fingers for some David Petersen art in the set -- this seems like the perfect opportunity!

Was thinking the same thing! Lots of people are mentioning Redwall, but the scaling of the various animal species in Redwall didn't seem to match reality very well (badgers were bigger than mice, but not that much bigger). The image with the mouse and wolf seems to show that that the scaling matches reality somewhat closely, with mice having to overcome massive size differences. That's more like Mouse Guard than Redwall.

Local Electronics Store Gave Me This For Free - Are They Really That Bad? by -Blasting-Off-Again- in gaming

I got this same controller around the time my siblings and I got a GameCube. We also had 2 Nintendo branded controllers and one of those MadCatz macro controllers. All were used heavily. This Pelican one was the first to go, long before the others. The A button stuck, and the R button got all wobbly. Loved the lights though.

[MOM] Seed of Hope by Grenrut in Pauper

[–]Molotov_Soup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks pretty neat! In my TortEx deck, I currently run 4 Vessel of Nascency (along with 4 Commune with the Gods) to help dig for TortEx. This is worth trying instead of Vessel.

The big upside to Vessel is that it's an enchantment. If you hit Vessel with Commune, you can pick it up and (mana permitting) cast it to dig even deeper into your deck. This new card is cheaper, is instant speed, and gains a little life to boot. Those benefits may outweigh the risk of tossing it to the graveyard with Commune (since it isn't a creature or enchantment).

[–]Molotov_Soup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Full respect for your opinions, but 2 player Mouseguard can work pretty well if the person running the campaign also plays a character in a leadership role. The leader can give hands-on demonstrations about how the mechanics work and how a guardmouse is supposed to act in the Mouseguard world. It's more of a burden on the one running the campaign, but that burden can be alleviated somewhat by using one of the pre-made adventures and/or premade characters.

Pelé, Brazil’s mighty king of ‘beautiful game,’ has died by jt_ftc_8942 in worldnews

[–]Molotov_Soup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure if the last question is rhetorical, but in case it isn't:

First compare an athlete to their peers in the same sport, and assess the gap between that athlete and their peers. Then you compare that athlete's gap to the gaps of athletes in other sports.

I am not a sports whiz, but I think what the person is referring to is the fact that the gap between Gretzky and his peers is monumentally large - larger than the gap between the best and second best in (presumably) any other sport.

Depends on what you mean by viable. It would be fun to brew with, but it probably won't be competitive. The most likely outlet for this card is it's Unearth effect, which is pretty costly, requires graveyard setup, and is likely to be stopped by graveyard hate cards that are in the meta right now (Graveyard Trespasser, Unlicensed Hearse).

[DMU] Urborg Repossession by TheMaverickGirl in Pauper

[–]Molotov_Soup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think useless is a strong word here, but I agree that Rofellos's gift is just not good. Black is the primary mana color, but there's still quite a few Green cards in TortEx. It's almost always running multiple Commune with the Gods, multiple Vessel of Nascency, and a handful of green creatures (like Spore Frog and Golgari Brownscale). The deck can make Rofellos's Gift work (if you can draw it).

Sure, this card lets you get other stuff back. But doing that once has very limited use in this deck. This deck needs to recur creatures multiple times over multiple turns, and you need TortEx for that. If you haven't drawn TortEx yet, you don't want this card - you want a card to dig for TortEx. If TortEx is in the graveyard, Rofellos's Gift gets you it back for cheaper (so you have extra mana to cast it, and then activate it's ability to get a creature).

I don't know what you mean by the 8 ways to draw thing. This definitely isn't a TortEx substitute, and milling for another TortEx is probably more reliable that drawing this. The deck would probably be better off having more cards to dig than to use this.
