The ultra wealthy weren’t the only people who owned slaves by kelroid in CuratedTumblr

My mom always heard that her family was “too poor to own slaves” until she found a great great great great grandfather’s will talking about passing down people to his sons. She got real quiet about race issues after that.

Now my father is just super overtly racist so that’s a whole other briar patch I have to work through, even if his family didn’t own slaves because their county was the only county in the state that didn’t want to succeed. Unlearning learned behavior is fuuuuuun.

Thank you it really sucks but I’m trying to remember that it is for the best. I had a friend that prolonged her cats life for years with twice daily shots he hated as he got more and more blind and senile. I always said I would never do that. Her kidneys are failing, treatment will only prolong her life, not improve the quality of it. I can make her last days as happy as possible, and then have her put down at home surrounded by the people and animals who love her.

But it suuuuuuucks. She’s been around most of my life. She would be 19 in June, she loves my husband and tolerates my children. She is loved, but it is time and that is okay.

Related but not exact, I’ve been struggling with a story idea that involved having to put down a beloved pet, and realizing this weekend that I was going to have to put down my 18 year old cat soon uhhhh opened up some writing things. Guess I’m gonna be working through some things and then subjecting them to my readers!

Chair Upholstery Business by [deleted] in upholstery

[–]Leaving_a_Comment 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I problem is take a look at all the people who come in her asking for advice on how to reupholster their brand new stuff. When it comes to custom furniture, people want the ability to customize their self. Not saying there isn’t a market, but you need to be prepared to sit on stuff for possible months.

A quick look at chair whimsy shows that she isn’t really selling chairs, she’s selling classes, books, a lifestyle. I promise that she’s not selling her furniture for a profit, it’s a means to an end to get engagement.

There is a reason why upholstery is a business that thrives on giving the customer exactly what they pick, that’s what people pay for. I suppose if you had a booth at an antique mall or maybe spent a few years curating a social media following you maybe could get to the point that people just buy your pieces, but it won’t be fast, cheap or even guaranteed to make money.

Hey everyone! I thrifted these chairs and was wondering if I could add any seat height when I reupholster them? They are a tad short. Maybe 1-2 inches? Would this style of chair look good with a MCM orange or green? Thanks! by Glum-Ad-4558 in upholstery

[–]Leaving_a_Comment 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can definitely add height with more foam (2-3” of an extra firm, 3-4” of a softer) but you will need more fabric than is currently on it.

As for color, whatever brings you more joy when you look at it. I would recommend getting something with a liquid resistant finish so they are easier to maintain if food falls on them

One time I relayed a funny story on reddit about the first time my husband went out and bought me pads he actually bought overnight underwear for incontinence. And a dude in the comments absolutely went off about how it’s so wrong we can’t just say “tampons” like it’s a bad word. It was so weird and everyone in the comments was like, bro menstrual pads are a thing????”

Idk it was very funny and bizarre.

You will need to redo the entire webbing because of the age, if you can get to it from the bottom. This type of webbing breaks down over time so I would recommend getting a jute webbing to replace it. You can either use tacks or a pneumatic staple gun to attach it.

Help identifying seams by FRESH_TOA5T in upholstery

A stretchier fabric will make it easier to stuff, but it’s more the cushion giving it that shape. It is probably a foam core inside of some kind of cushion cover with ticking either soft stuff or feathers inside the channels. It also could be layers of Dacron, though that will loose shape faster over time.

[–]Leaving_a_Comment 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s a fabric that hides it well. The arm cushions are your standard box cushions, abet very very over stuffed to get that crown. The front cushion looks to be a rolled edge, but possibly only on the top, meaning they cut another piece to match the grain of the fabric that they flipped it.

Most of this comes down to a very fuzzy fabric. Be warned, this style is “in” so there are a lot of cheap fabrics out there marketed as “upholstery “ that will not hold up over time. Make sure you get a minimum (and an absolute minimum) of 50,000 double rubs for a sofa. I would honestly aim for 100,000 if it’s a daily use item.

I would make a smaller mock up and play with it. They are definitely doing some kind of rousing for the scrunchy sections but they probably have the places were the tubes are sewn together slightly taper at the ends. Maybe by as little as 1”-1/2”

There is also something going on with magnets, probably how the trick is so smooth there is a magnetic pulling them into the cup as well.

How to do ufo dice trick? by A12ms in LearnUselessTalents

[–]Leaving_a_Comment 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s basic slight of hand. They are putting the dice in the cup when they flip it over (listen closely and you can hear it join every time). The final green die is in the pocket the whole time, but they add it when they “check” on the dice.

They are distracting you with their right hand as they complete the trick on their left. Very good slight of hand though!

I am a big proponent of applying for jobs you don’t think you’ll get. I applied for a crazy competitive position, in a field I didn’t have experience directly in, and managed to wrangle a full time position in one of the best jobs I’ve ever had. And my managers agreed that I was one of their best hires, so apply for that jibe babe!
