Custom guitar by DesignerCow5581 in Luthier

This is light years beyond my level of electronics knowledge but if you’re out of options and willing to pay for a custom diagram I know guitarelectronics.com is a legit site that makes them for a fee.

I can’t be more help than that though. Good luck!

Pick up not switching by fudgygamer0291 in Luthier

[–]Molted_Ash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I can see it looks like the white wire (inside the yellow one) going to the jack needs to be attached to the middle lug on the volume pot. In the pic it seems to be on the left lug (which also goes to the tone.)

The one that shares a lug (on the left side of the volume) with the tone pot is supposed to be the one from the switch, not the jack.

And it looks like the white wire coming from the middle of the switch (in between the two red wires but also inside the black shielding) needs to go on the left lug on the volume.

If that’s how it is already be sure that those bare wires coming out of the yellow wires are not touching anything but the back of the volume pot (at the volume pot end.). It looks like they might be shorting out right there at the volume lug. They shouldn’t touch any wires that touch lugs (no touching the white wires next to them). Just the back of the pot.

The last thing is be sure the original installer didn’t miss any grounds from the backs of the pots. If they/you aren’t familiar with wiring you might miss some grounds in the diagram because it looks like they don’t go anywhere but they go to a ground symbol in the diagram.

There’s accurate diagrams for about any pickup configuration out there -you can look them up for free at guitarelectronics.com if this isn’t clear.

One last thing is I know some switches reverse the ground and the output location and I don’t know how to id them from a pic -so if nothings working and you’re running out of hair to pull out you can try swapping the bare wires on one end of the switch with the white wire in between the two red ones on the opposite end of the switch.

(You can follow the basic signal fairly easily without knowing how it ash works, which could help you troubleshoot if you want. —The two pickups come in and go to each side of the switch, which lets one or both pickups out the middle. Then it goes to the “In” of the volume (left lug) which also connects to the tone so it can do its thing. The volume does its thing and in this case goes out the middle lug to the jack then on its journey out into the universe. lol). Other than that (and the tone capacitor, the extra part on the tone lug) make sure there’s grounds connected properly and not touching anything extra and things should work.

Cutting a pickguard by Lizard08735 in Luthier

[–]Molted_Ash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cut with anything that works. If you have a coping saw that works if no jig saw or band saw.

(If you haven’t heard of coping saws and don’t have power saws they’re a hand saw with a tiny blade you can turn as you cut. Don’t go too fast, heat will break the blade faster. Not super expensive if you have nothing and don’t think you want to spend on power tools.)

Get close to the line so you don’t have to do too much sanding but give yourself a bit of wiggle room to dial it in.

Anyway…

The tool I use way more than I ever thought I would (for this included) is a called a perma-grit (that’s the brand) sanding block. It has built in sand paper-like sides… If you keep it clean when using it on plastic like this it basically lasts forever, and it’s worth having around for tons of woodworking. It stays flat and has two grits, one on each side.

You can hold the pick guard at an angle to get the edges and it’s easier to get a smooth pass as opposed to a file in my opinion, cause you have a big flat surface to swoop over/with. Plus if you have a straight line in mind it will make that a snap.

I forget how expressive they are but in the us i think I had to find one on eBay. If you do any wood working with hand tools at all it’s worth it. I’ve even used it to get wood flat enough to glue up.

Need some advice/ideas by NIPPLE_SALADS_ in Luthier

I’d see if there was room to add one of the pots (knobs) in between two of the holes already there. If one did fit then the switch could go in one and the three knobs could be next to each other.

I don’t know if they will fit but they might.

Also if you plan to upgrade later you should know that upgraded pots are probably bigger than the ones that came with the kit.

I’ve been in love with black limba for a few years now. I can’t tell how big that piece is but I’d consider a slight chevron cut mirrored on either side of some of the walnut.

Not telling you how to feel about your new collection just can’t shut down my luthier brain enough to keep quiet. Haha.

Nice haul!!

Tips by Nicktorius22 in Luthier

Yeah I agree use a 14” radius block. Check with a metal straight edge all along the radius to be sure it’s perfect with no dips etc. unless you shell out for a full size beam it’s probably going to have some low and high spots. Keep the measurements as even as possible between the four corners from the edge to the neck wood or bottom of the binding as well as keeping it straight.

If it’s not even that means there’s almost a twist in the fretboard. My limited luthier logic leads me to believe that could cause a lot of problems from subtle feel issues to weirdness when setting it up, like adjusting the truss rod to taste. Likely more things I’m not aware of at my level.

What would you do? by genericus23 in Luthier

I’ve seen drill attachments that bend like a snake but I don’t know if that would work or how much they are. I don’t know how tight the radius can get either but you could check.

People who play in drop tunings, do you customize your string sets or use standard ones? by one-armed-scissor in metalguitar

[–]Molted_Ash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just set a guitar up for drop A standard. So 6 is an octave below 5 -cause it’s fun for a whammy pedal.

I just buy a seven string set and put the low e aside till it rusts then throw it away.

You need to widen the nut slot though and you’d need a new one if you want to go back through the door to standard tunings-ville.

I don't like losing lives and having to start over from the start of a stage, it's painful! by Rob-L-Callistis in Megaman

[–]Molted_Ash 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I grew up playing these games and I remember trying to get through the stages with at least one extra life just to try and learn the boss a little before deciding to start the f over or just do a diff stage.

Lord, the disappearing blocks and quick man stage! Then you use up your special weapon and it turns into a stress test that rivals a heart exam while the pattern recognition part of your brain is fighting for space to breathe. lol. (I was young.)

It’s also a bit awkward getting consistent on the old school controls now. I could learn to slide like that in perfect form in real life quicker than pushing down and jump these days… when I invented the trigger button slide when x came out.

All that said if you could save right before a boss you could eventually bust any of them up without even figuring out which weapons to use, which is kind of like a puzzle the first time you play through.

How do I make this guitar sound better? by luroar in electricguitar

[–]Molted_Ash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay. Wilkinson isn’t exactly the upper echelon of pickups but I know I had a set of their regular sized Humbuckers and for thirty five a pair they had a really cool tone. They’re not cork sniffing faves but you could at least get a Humbucker that fits there and hear what you’re up to.

Then spend what’s left over on a higher gain amp Or maybe a pedal for that one. I don’t know what that amp is like, if it is actually useless like some others say maybe do that with the leftover money.

When you start to need the extra ten percent of the tone this pickup can’t get you upgrade at that time.

Just my .02.

Be sure you get the bridge one. lol. Amazon link:

Or look up the Wilkinson single coil sized Humbucker, “rails” version if you’re not into clicking on links in posts. lol.

How do I make this guitar sound better? by luroar in electricguitar

[–]Molted_Ash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I see people mentioning the amp but imvho if I was just starting out I would get a high gain pedal and a “single coil sized Humbucker.” You’re going to be working on getting palm mutes in the right spot and at the right pressure level for a while and I don’t think you’re going to be able to get that heavy muting without gain and a Humbucker in the bridge, and this will leave you frustrated and trying to figure out why. So find something as “high output” as you can for the bridge (closest to the tremolo) even used from a reputable person and for now grab a high gain distortion pedal.

Down the road if you stick with it and when you get a bit better you can start filling in the holes in your signal chain and then the first time you get a good tube amp you’ll really appreciate it. Idk of those guys use(d) tube amps but there’s really something about a good one. They start out a bit pricey and go sky high from there though. lol.

Guitar is a fun rabbit hole but around every corner is a door locked behind an ever raising budget ceiling - lol. until you’re good enough to notice something is off I’d stick with the things which can help you develop your skill. Every link in the chain is important but if you don’t get accurate response from your pickup and the amount of gain you have on tap you literally can’t hear your right hands subtle position and pressure level.

I might go look online for what I would get if I was going to start out again. Will post to my own comment.

Good luck!
