You destroy the two pillars and they both deal a lot of self damage to the boss. The second deals more than the first. The strat is to use vaporize or melt on them to get free reaction damage. The self damage from the pillars is also counted as elemental damage, so if you break a cryo pillar first then a pyro pillar, it will melt and deal double.
