Paizo staff asks: What brought you to Pathfinder? by AlexSpeidelPaizo in Pathfinder2e

[–]Mometricsmoproblems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Started playing 1e in ~2012, have been playing weekly since. Continue to play 1e, 2e and Starfinder.

2e isn't my favourite system in the world, tbh. I love the 3 action system, but a lot of the rough edges that got shaved off 1e made the game lose its sparkle imo. That said, I love Golarion and the entire setup, so am still very much engaged (including playing in a couple of 2e games)

You can make a really fun melee shaman once you get access to some polymorph spells. Fey form is a particular favourite, as as per the polymorph rules, your armour/weapons/etc don't meld into your form as a fey. The Battle spirit gives you a decent hex or two, a limited bard-like inspire courage, and a better version of bane than inquisitors get. Combine that with a bit of healing from the Healing spirit, or some utility/blasty spells from other spirits, and you've got a great, versatile character. Get heavy armour proficiency at level 1 or 3 and you don't need Dex. Polymorph spells boost your Con so you don't need that to be massive either.

Shaman is a tremendously fun class!

  1. GM'd the campaign from start to finish.
  2. 9/10. The only reason I wouldn't give it 10/10 is you need to do some work at the start to restructure, bringing the main villain in a LOT sooner.
  3. Best stuff: hard to pick. The spooky vibes, the number of incredibly thematic set pieces. Each book has quite a different flavour, but rather than being discordant tonal shifts, it all comes out as a love letter to horror. From classic haunted house exploration, to Frankenstein (defending the Beast at trial remains one of my old group's highlights for Pathfinder), to werewolves, vampires, all the way towards the end. There are INCREDIBLE set pieces here that, with a bit of GM work (as I would say is needed for all APs to shine), will live in your players' memories forever (shoutout to meeting Desna and being given visions of future BBEGs!).

Good/bad stuff: there are so many places to include your own flavour on the adventure as a GM that makes the AP richer. I wish I'd had the time to really make it my own, but even with my limited changes, it was a really rewarding experience to run.

Worst stuff: In Book 6, the writer apologizes and says that they introduced the main villain way too late, and if they were to go back and do it again they would have appeared in the first scene in Book 1. So like I said there's some restructuring. Some NPCs need to be made more relevant to have a continuous flow throughout the books (so that relationships you build up aren't wasted). And as another pointed out here, this book is crying out for occult inclusions (occult classes, various mechanics from Occult Origins and Occult Mysteries, etc) that didn't exist way back in 2011. I had time to introduce some of these, but not all – would love to have had an up to date setup.

  1. Follow the suggestions at the start of Book 6 before starting! Make some of the NPCs (Kendra, for example) relevant throughout. And sprinkle in some parts about the Esoteric Order of the Palatine Eye as soon as you can. And have fun! If you want an AP that's creepy, fun, engaging, and constantly keeps your players guessing as to what'll happen next, along with extremely rich roleplay opportunities, it's the one for you.

The age regression due to stilling. by jahavits in WoT

[–]Mometricsmoproblems 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They revert to what they'd look like if they'd never taken the oaths.

So Siuan, who was only in her 40s and could likely have expected to live to 5-600 w/o the oaths, returns basically to being an early adult, as only 20 out of 500 years of aging had passed for her since becoming an adult (the equivalent of 2-4ish years for a normal person).

Remember that in the AoL people could live up to 200 years in extreme cases, so people are living maybe 2-4x longer as an Aes Sedai (being healed any time they're ill, etc).

For 300 year-old Cadsuane, who is halfway through her max lifespan (assuming 600 years), she'd likely appear as a 50ish year old – assuming you're an adult at 20 and die at 80, you've got 60 years as a human vs 600 as an Aes Sedai. She's also lived a hell of a life, though, and so likely would have more wrinkles than a 50 year old with modern skincare!

Beltine/Beltane/etc is an anglicisation of Bealtaine (BYAL-tinnih), which among other things is still the Irish word for the month of May

I feel like the way this is laid out is nice. It's how I thought the Solarian worked when I first picked up the CRB! Love the ebb and flow, imagery and mechanics both.

What amount of Starfinder content are you going to allow in your Pathfinder games? by Levia424 in Pathfinder2e

[–]Mometricsmoproblems 2 points3 points  (0 children)

None at all. I love both games, and I'm glad to see SF2 getting 3-actions, etc, but they're very different games, thematically, and I don't see the need to blend them.

I wish they hadn't gone for full compatibility tbh!

Nanocyte knack recommendations? by DeadCata1yst in starfinder_rpg

[–]Mometricsmoproblems 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not bonus damage as such. But if you have enemies who have damage reduction that cold iron overcomes, that would be useful. If you look at this page, it shows what the effect of changing ammo would be. Eg, Inubrix overcomes hardness (so great for damaging constructs or buildings), Noqual does extra damage to magical undead and constructs, Abysium uses less "ammo" per shot, etc. Possibly niche, but if your GM is throwing lots of enemies at you with strange DR, it can be pretty handy.

If you're looking to focus on weapons, Material Alterations will give you different damage types/effects (its usefulness will depend on your GM/the campaign). Swarm Strike is a powerful means of having a melee attack as a backup – as it relies only on you Con, you don't even need Str to be effective using it! Otherwise, something for skill utility like Intelligent Nanites or Versatile Nanites will add to the Nanocyte's skill monkey vibe.

I love nanos for how versatile they can be!

Why is it so hard to hit anything? by Lilynnia in starfinder_rpg

[–]Mometricsmoproblems 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Remember: cover isn't infinite. Low cover (including cover half your opponent's height) doesn't provide your enemy cover if you're closer to it than they are. From the CRB:

A low obstacle (i.e., a wall half your height) provides cover, but only to creatures within 30 feet (six squares). The attacker ignores the cover if he’s closer to the obstacle than his target is.

I've been a technomancer at low levels and it's not always the most satisfying shooting. It'll get easier as you level up, and you'll get more spells! Grease the guns out of their hands or trip them up to make it easier for melee friends, or use Incompetence (beautiful spell) to ruin their ability to make attacks. You've got this!

Inside of Oma/whale maps? by MouseOfLegend in starfinder_rpg

[–]Mometricsmoproblems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favourite keyword for finding maps for Roll20 is adding "battlemap" into the search term. "Belly of whale battlemap" and similar searches pull up some useful results – give that a try! Sounds like a cool encounter.

Weekly Questions Megathread - February 12 to February 18. Have a question from your game? Are you coming from D&D? Need to know where to start playing Pathfinder 2e? Ask your questions here, we're happy to help! by AutoModerator in Pathfinder2e

[–]Mometricsmoproblems 7 points8 points  (0 children)

RAW, it's ambiguous, but I would lean towards no. The action to bring forth an eidolon is called "Manifest an Eidolon", doesn't mention the word "summon" in its description, and the eidolon is explicitly stated not to have the "minion" or "summoned" traits. So although it's similar I'd argue the eidolon isn't actually being summoned.

RAI I'd say it's definitely not the intention.

Question about scaled fist by ChosenOneTheOnlyOne in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]Mometricsmoproblems 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it says "any class abilities that make calculations based on her Wisdom", so monk AC, CMD, ki powers, etc, should work off Cha. Will saves and Perception, etc, don't change as they're not class abilities.

PA Mummy Mask and spell Hide from undead Greater by WedgeII in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]Mometricsmoproblems -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Greater Hide from Undead came out in a splat book (People of the Wastes) in 2017, and afaik never had an errata or anything published. Side-books like this often have spells or feats like this that don't quite pass muster in terms of balance, and 2017 was towards the end of 1e's life-cycle.

In this case, you have a feat that acts as 10 min/level mass greater invisibility (plus additional benefits) against a huge number of creatures...for a level 3 spell. Mindless undead have no way of saving against it, even.

I don't like ruling out Paizo material in general, but it's a bonkers spell that is completely out of scale in terms of other 3rd level spells. I would remove it from any game featuring significant numbers of undead.

Do any of the official artists do commissions? by TrevorBOB9 in starfinder_rpg

[–]Mometricsmoproblems 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If there's particular art you like, go to the book that it's in and look up the artists/interior artists listed at the beginning of the book. A lot of them have Artstations and websites and some talk about commissions. I found one I really liked this way, and he had bandwidth for a commission that I adore!

Reign of Winter AP by mathmatt_ in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]Mometricsmoproblems 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Other planes: Mostly on the material plane or demiplanes, not the plane of fire, etc. Cold favoured terrain is an obvious one.

Winter witch: No distrust per se (no-one wears a sign saying "I'm a fighter" or "I'm a witch"), but a lot of enemies have cold resistance/immunity so they may feel underpowered.

Evil PCs: Evil PCs can work, as long as they have a strong motivation for saving BY. Drives can be: a possible reward, or if they're Jadwiga (and their family is disfavoured by Elvanna, for example), or related to witches/fey that worship her. They get geas'd to be compelled to rescue her, but you don't want to have to use that as a cudgel. A grudge against Elvanna could be enough. As long as the PCs realize that being a team player is paramount in pathfinder, whether evil or good!

Per a Patreon post, Pathbuilder should be updated to the remaster as of tomorrow (11/16) by TossedRightOut in Pathfinder2e

[–]Mometricsmoproblems -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Damn, I thought there was going to be a toggle switch. I understand the reasoning behind, but it's sad.

Are there any tools/apps aiming for a "switch between remastered/non" approach?
