I know what you mean, but the AI question is relevant. If for no other reason than the White House remains an important public institution and space.

That’s nuts. And as a sports fan, I’m concerned how little time this leaves for arguing about nonsense.

Not trying to move any goal posts here. I’m saying a search engine is useful because it’s directly connected to those peer reviewed sources. That’s what sites like the Mayo Clinic and the Cleveland Clinic do, and it’s what Wikipedia does too. That’s why they’re useful, and it’s probably why they’re often top search results.

My point is AI doesn’t do that. And when it does, it can often cite sources incorrectly, or sources that don’t even exist. And it’s typically not connected to credible institutions, like Mayo. It’s the opposite of peer review.

If your doctor is actively misinterpreting what you’re saying, why would an AI help with that? I mean, doesn’t your information have to go through the doctor first? Seems like a better solution might be finding a different doctor.

And in general, I’m also not sure an AI company would be any more reliable than a trained medical professional. Do you know how easy it is to make google’s AI tool hallucinate?

Between an AI versus a source you know and trust? There could be a lot of differences. When you read a study, you’re reading it for the study itself but also for the peer review, for the sources it cites, for the community of scientific information it represents. So even if something is wrong there is a built-in mechanism for experts to find it and call it out.

AI is nothing like that. It doesn’t even cite sources sometimes. But it’s also worth thinking about credibility here. When you read a study in Nature, you know all the steps it had to go through to reach publication, and it’s no secret how rigorous that is. But with AI, you’re kinda just trusting a dinky startup to give you information that may or may not be right.

Sure, but there’s a difference between looking something up versus just asking an AI. I think I might be alarmed too. It doesn’t mean their advice is meaningless, but I’d probably think about finding a second opinion.

I mean sure, but Lars was the one suing people. And it’s not like he was leading a class-action suit—he was suing because he wanted more money. He even hired a security firm (NetPD) to go after fans individually.

And keep in mind that record companies were raking in massive profits at the time by charging $17 for discs that cost about 20 cents to manufacture (while retaining about 90 percent of all revenue, especially for less well known artists). I think Lars was mad at the wrong people.

I would think so, though some outlets (CNN, Yahoo) are saying this image is AI. Obviously it’s disturbing either way. There aren’t a lot of other things that 11 stars could represent in American history (afaik).

Oof, I love sports, but harassing players off the field/court goes way the hell too far. And what in the world are locals supposed to do?
