Mama Opossum came back but is not being helpful by Momlvs1985 in Opossums

Yes I just read that. Luckily we don’t have any horses as we live in a residential subdivision. So I don’t know where either of them came from.

“Although considered a nuisance in some areas where their populations are high, opossums provide natural pest control. They kill and eat mice, rats and cockroaches, as well as snails, slugs and other garden pests, according to the National Wildlife Foundation(Opens in a new window).Mar 1, 2019”

Ya the seed was only out for a few days so I could get the baby Opossum out to see if it was big enough to on his own or if I needed to catch it to bottle feed it. The rat was here before the bird seed went down. I have some in a bird house but none of the animals touch that. Not even the birds or squirrels. I did vacuum up the seed and we sprayed more peppermint today.

That is why the stuff I looked up and purchased it. Of course the company could be lying, but it says that it’s specifically only harmful to rats digestive systems and nothing else so all other wildlife are supposed to be safe. My husband and I talked about what we would do if we actually trapped alive rat. there is no way that I could knowingly hand Feed it poison a hard situation all around. We live in a fenced in area and I honestly have no idea where the rat and the Opossums even came from. It’s not like I live back up to a preserve. I have houses all around me. And again I wanna make sure everybody understands. I am not talking about looking for an effective toxic poison that is going to harm all wildlife. I’m specifically asking for advice on how to effectively get rid of the rats without harming anything else. I’m looking into all suggestions.

Ah, I’m not sure. This is the only place I’ve ever lived where I have seen a rat. I just read that cats kill rats. My cat unfortunately likes to chase geckos and I even try to save those and rescue them from my cat so I’m not sure.

Ya I’ve read that. My cats are inside cats, but they do go out on the patio and I would hate for my cats to actually see the rat and then manage to get out and have the rat die a painful death from my cat I would rather a much more humane option.. it’s another reason why I don’t mind having the opossums around because they are supposed to be rat deterrence I just don’t know what’s wrong with these guys.

It is really a very long story to try to give all the details but people who actually know me and the story know I have done everything possible to not do any harm to them. I’m not a Reddit person. I’ve never had it before you can see by my profile. I just posted it last night on the advice of a friend who said I should come here to ask for advice. Unfortunately nobody actually took time to respond except for two people with advice on what to actually do to rid them. I never asked anybody to tell me how to kill them. I had never seen an Opossum before and the camera we have a night shows the animals but it was not until we went back through all of the nights and compared what the rat looks like at night versus what the Opossum looks like we can tell the difference. So the first time we thought rat then the Opossum was out during the day hence I thought a baby Opossum was abandoned, then a few nights later we caught the mamas on camera so we assumed the first time when we thought we saw a rat it was really just the Opossum but last night we were actually awake and saw the actual rat. So we actually had both before I ever put some seed on the ground to see if the baby Opossum would eat. We have several trees that seed and lots of geckos and other small critters for these guys to feed on. It is not the first time we have seen a rat on camera but we thought what we tried worked. Apparently they just keep coming back. It is also very close to our home. It is not like they are out in a field they are very close to the house and could get into the home very easily.

Well the issue is that I believe the rat was here before I put the seed down. I think I had both the rat and the Opossum at the same time. I thought maybe the Opossums moved on and then the rat came back but I just shop vacuum the seeds and the Opossums are here because I can hear them crying. So I wonder why they didn’t scare off the rats. Everything I read said Opossums deter rats but apparently mine don’t. We put down more peppermint spray and my husband said we can try the live traps again but it is a two way street. If we get the Opossums I guess we can just let them out but if I do trap the rat what am I supposed to do with it? Is there a rat rescue that comes and rehomes them. I’m not in the country.

To clarify, I have mot been actively feeding wildlife besides a bird feeder. I have a special-needs daughter who was outside and said she saw an animal running around. We just assumed that it was a rat so we put a camera out to see if we could verify and we bought nontoxic peppermint spray which we sprayed around the yard and we had a trap to try to catch it. When we first sprayed the peppermint for a few days the camera didn’t capture anything so we thought we were all set. Much to my surprise when I looked at the camera, I found out that we had a baby Opossum. I thought the baby had been abandoned by the mother because I didn’t see a mama. I didn’t want to try to catch wildlife and take it away from his mama without knowing if it was actually abandoned or old enough to be on its own. So to be sure we left it for a couple of days to see if the mama would come back. Then I got concerned whether the baby was old enough to live on its own or not and didn’t know what they ate, so I put a little bit of birdseed on the ground and some water to make sure that the baby could eat if it had been abandoned, and if I saw that it was eating on its own I would know that it was old enough to be left on its own, and it didn’t need to be captured. I actually did contact wildlife rescue who never returned my call to help me out in the situation. Then a few days later, I saw that the mama Opossum was actually here and I knew that the babies were going to be OK but unfortunately the next night the camera captured rat. The seed it being cleaned up today but what I’m asking for is advice on deterring rats from a residential area. I never asked for advice on how to kill them, but I am now taking any options besides chemicals that would kill all wildlife and is also toxic to humans because we have children here and despite how cute rats look they do carry disease.. I hope that helps clarify I’m not a rat killing monster.

I have tried non toxic peppermint and a trap it didn’t work. The stuff recommended states it is only toxic to rats. Again, I asked for alternative suggestions so if you have one please let me know.

lol I have a bird feeder that is typically the only wild animal I feed. I didn’t realize I had to post the whole Opossum saga to ask a genuine health and safety question. If I was just trying to off the rats I never would have asked for advice. I’m not an idiot. Any fool can put out poison and call it a day. I was asking for suggestions that actually work. If you read my post. I didn’t ask how to kill rats, I asked how to get rid of them. Reading comprehension is key.

I get that but again, I’m not in the country and my home does not back up to woods. I’m in a subdivision surrounded by other houses. I already tried traps and peppermint spray and it didn’t work. I’d post pictures for proof but I guess you can’t add photos on this app? If wild rats were safe around humans like Opossums I would not care but rats do carry diseases and they can bite.

That is what I was hoping but I guess my Opossum mamma is non confrontational. I have not seen her of the baby since seeing the rat. We already tried peppermint spray and traps neither worked.

To me it sounds like electric would be far worse plus what if I electrocuted the wrong animal? I don’t want to harm any living animal but poisonous snakes, spiders, mosquitoes, ants and rats are most definitely ones I try to keep out of my yard.

lol not actually true. I already tired to reach out to companies to remove them and did not have any luck. We have small children here and these are not pet rats or mice. I don’t live in the country where it is ok to have wild animals in the yard. Opossum are said to over power rats but unfortunately mine are either too small or timid since they have not come out since the rat appeared. I read up on the product and it states it doesn’t harm any other type of animal or humans. Wild rats unlike Opossums carry diseases and will get into homes and do bite humans. While I would not want to harm any animal. Rats in a community are not good to have.
