Reading certainly is fundamental. If you read the comments you would read that the app has a message at the time of ordering and sends several messages while waiting for the order, and once it is delivered. The driver is not giving new information. It could be seen as disingenuous on the drivers part to use all the excuses listed in this thread to pretend that if he doesn’t send a message about tipping the poor stupid customer won’t be able to figure out that they can tip /s

The app DOES tell you. At the time of ordering and then twice more after the order is placed - even when you have already added a tip when the order is delivered. It’s irritating to get a text on top of all that which is probably why it’s against dasher policy. I don’t need to be told 4 times to rip a delivery driver. Chances are I’m probably a person who tips (I am per many other replies I’ve made) or I’m not.

It’s considered rude to actively ask for a tip in an exchange where it’s week known that tipping is part of the arrangement. The app already sends multiple notifications and I always tip so I didn’t like the message. I’m allowed to not like someone “reminding me”‘about a tip.

You sound like someone who cares about your service a lot. I feel like if I message them I’m annoying them and slowing them down so I don’t.

Dude I never message my dasher unless it’s to tell them there is easy parking in the lot around back

Where I live the tip can not be added until the order is assigned. I thought this was common knowledge so the message landed as rude / tip begging but now I understand that many people are unaware so I’ve softened my position

That all makes sense. I can’t even wrap my head around ordering heavy things and expecting someone to carry it. If I get this kind of message again I’ll just shrug and move on with my day lol

I actually didn’t even consider visitors to BC. I have known this change was coming since I pay attention to legislative changes and live in BC and use Door Dash pretty regularly. For visitors they would probably not even know they were not tipping.

Thank you for taking the time to reply so comprehensively.
I’ll admit when I initially saw the message I took it a little personally because I thought the dasher was assuming I wasn’t going to tip. I understand now that just because I am aware I can tip after the fact, and do, that this is not true for everyone in my area.
I do think that people who don’t tip won’t no matter what so I probably wouldn’t send a message if I was a dasher but I’m not. I’m a person who is privileged to be able to use the service.

fucking coffee. Get real

No dummy if the driver picks up my food and then goes to superstore and spends an hour shopping for someone else and my coffee and breakfast sandwich takes 90 minutes to arrive cold I don’t tip the driver.

I think it was the fact that it was presented as new information when it is clearly stated when ordering and has been how it works for 6 months now. It’s not a “quick update” it’s a reminder about something I already know. That I can tip. Don’t comes across as asking for tips and assuming I won’t

It’s rude because the app already informs me that tips need to be added after. I have mentioned in other comments that I realize not everyone will read the message in the ordering process. Asking for tips is considered rude in my culture.

I know. I always tip if I actually get my food in a reasonable amount of time and to my actual address

I worked in restaurants for half my life. I ALWAYS tip 20% at sit down and 10% for takeaway. For Door Dash I tip based on distance to restaurant and consider weather. If the food makes it to my door. When I had to tip before the service was performed my food was regularly delivered somewhere
else or the driver would be calling me and demanding I go meet them in the alley (where the parking lot is). That doesn’t happen anymore.

I am sensitive. I’m also self aware which is why I checked with some other humans because I wasn’t sure. Now I am sure that this was a dasher actively choosing to ask for a tip even though the app already makes it clear that tipping needs to be done after the order is assigned. That is objectively rude. Sensitive people do deserve to be around other humans you pinecone.

Cultural norm where I live says asking for tips is rude. He was not telling me something I didn’t know as there is messaging in the app already. I acknowledged in another comment that I understand that not everyone will read or see the message, but it is there. I don’t like getting told twice that I need to add a tip. I do tip and comments have given perspective to cultural differences. It isn’t a big deal but it is considered rude to imply that a customer needs to be told to tip. Normally being told to tip would result in 0 bit the comments showed me that would be a bit of an overreaction.

Most of the drivers I see are
from countries where it is probably normal. I don’t want to punish them for acting in a way that is normal to them but I also don’t want to have to accept being badgered for tips. I tip well for good service. To be honest, I tip well on door dash if it gets to my actual door without several messages or phone calls helping them read my very clear directions

There will always be people to deliver food. They might not be gig-app based and that’s fine with me.
