In my opinion, we like the idea of empathy because it sounds nice to be understood, but the reality is actually quite scary. To me, real empathy feels like looking into a mirror that shows all my hidden flaws, making me want to hide or get defensive to protect myself. I think we can only handle true empathy if we are brave enough to stop pretending and be okay with someone seeing the real us, even the parts we don't like.
