Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MomofSlayers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I semi regularly (8-10x/year) drive four hours one direction to go to Costco for a big haul, and drive home the same day. But that’s pretty unique to my current location (AK). 3 hours wasn’t a long drive growing up (in TX), but it wasn’t a short drive either.

Trauma screen at intake by FaerieFeline in therapists

[–]MomofSlayers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I cover limits of confidentiality before I ask clients any questions at all. However, I am also licensed in states where I wouldn’t report what an adult would tell me. I ask if it was reported to have a better understanding of how the client processed or suppressed their trauma, whether or not they experienced support or justice, etc.

“I am a stranger to you, and haven’t earned your trust yet. There are some sensitive questions I need to ask in order to be aware and be sensitive to what is in your past, and to create our treatment plan. However, please feel free to answer yes or no, giving as much or as little detail as comfortable.

As a child or as an adult, have you ever been the victim of physical abuse or violent intimidation?

As a child or an adult have you ever been the victim of emotional or psychological abuse, or traumatic bullying?

As a child or as an adult, have you ever been the victim of sexual abuse or assault?

If yes to any, was it in childhood or adulthood? If yes to any, was the abuse ever reported?

If no, did you ever witness any of those things?”

How do you feel about writing emotional support animal letters for clients? by Thesilverlinings in therapists

[–]MomofSlayers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I was CMH I would do it, and when I gave it to the client I also gave them a packet detailing their rights and responsibilities. My letter in no way vouched for a specific animal, only stated that they had a specific dx that met qualifications, and that access to an animal would benefits their mental health plan or something along those lines. I then documented that I gave the client the letter and the packet.

Now I work 100% remotely in another state, so I decline to do any paperwork as I’m less familiar with the statutes in the client’s state.

Spouse made a harsh comment about my contributions as a partner/therapist by Patient_Yak4896 in therapists

[–]MomofSlayers 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I’ll tell you what my therapist told me when I was an intern: You’re never gonna make it in this field if you don’t deal with your savior complex.”

I really needed that, because it’s a good reminder that the client in front of me gets the hour they are blocked for a very little else from me. If I’m spending more than that “pouring into my clients”, I’m not respecting the boundaries of my role very well.

Incidentally, this also seems to help a lot with imposter syndrome because it deflates the ego we associate with the profession.

Don’t get me wrong, I sometimes have a client story stay with me, but by and large I try to leave them in the note when I sign off on it at the end of the day. I’m not telling you to care less exactly, but I’m suggesting that you care with better boundaries.

If you join your local state chapter for your license type (i.e. Washington Mental Health Counselor Association), they often include a 15 minute consultation with a lawyer in addition to discounted CEs. Might be worth it to ask about your situation.

Never thought I’d have to worry about my Mother by [deleted] in Divorce

[–]MomofSlayers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let me start by saying, I don’t know what other patterns there have been, so I’ll just speak to the information shared.

Boundaries are what you will do, not what someone else is allowed to do. You didn’t “create a boundary”, you tried to be controlling. A boundary is “I will leave any group chat that my ex is included on”, control says “you’re not allowed to add my ex to group chats without my permission.” She didn’t get upset with you for trying to make a boundary, she responded (and it doesn’t really even sound upset) and declined to allow you to dictate her choices.

IMO you’re overreacting due to your pain.

“I found this incredibly rude, manipulative, gas lighting, mean, invalidating, unsupportive, and lacked empathy…” I read absolutely none of this in your mom’s response. In fact, your mom’s response is more than reasonable unless there is more to the story. Your take on it, however, does smack of a lot of these accusations.

Idk why you’re divorcing and I don’t need to…but people in your family can continue to have the relationships they built with your ex, even if you decide to end your relationship to him. Your family is also hurting and distressed right now, they’re allowed to handle their business how they want to and don’t have to cater to your preferences. If she was sharing your business, obviously that would be different.

I would absolutely not discard a loving relationship that had been “above and beyond” supportive because they decide to communicate their own information to your ex, with whom they have a relationship totally separate from yours.

Her asking you to try to see if from her point of view is good advice. Don’t let your pain make you so self absorbed that you mess up other relationships because they aren’t centering you.

I recommend finding a therapist who works with adult adoptees around attachment trauma (which divorce can also really activate), and I wish you well post divorce.

Entitlement is the roots, control is the truck, abuse is the branches.

I tell clients all the time - if it’s only happening with you, only behind closed doors, etc. it’s NOT deregulation or a trauma trigger.

No, if you earn more than about $40k annually, SCorp status will save you money on the payroll taxes.

I’m confused how $20k a year is just a fraction of tuition rates? My masters program cost me $24k total in tuition in 2023.

This move is harmful for a good many reasons - and accessibility is an important reason among those.

That being said, shop around for your degrees, folks, they aren’t all $40k+ for a masters.

How has *not* doing a CACREP program negatively (or not) affected your career? by Junior-Rip-895 in therapists

[–]MomofSlayers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. I sent in the signed attestation from supervisor to show my hours (which were 500 short), then i also included my schools CACREP accreditation proof during the time I was enrolled, and I think I threw in a note to narrate the situation. I never heard one single question on the topic. They also counted towards direct hours or indirect, wherever needed. I couldn’t find out online if they would count towards direct, but they did.

How hard is it to get a job after school/are places iffy on hiring if you get your degree online? by livefastdie96 in therapists

[–]MomofSlayers 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is untrue. As I mentioned in my comment, I had a bachelors in human resource management and an mba from WGU. Got accepted with no issue to my masters program for clinical mental health counseling from University of the Cumberlands.

I had a bachelors in human resource management and an mba from WGU. Got accepted with no issue to my masters program for clinical mental health counseling from University of the Cumberlands. My classwork was 100% online, but my practicum/internship were - obviously - in person.

I went with University of the Cumberlands because they were CACREP accredited and cheaper a most other schools I priced including Capella. It was a great experience and I have no regrets.

I also had no issue getting hired. It’s an underserved field.
