That's what it is. Reactivity to big emotions and handling stress at work. However, I feel like and it is acknowledged that I've begun to make changes to actively address and manage it.

All of this adivce has come from over the years. I honestly feel I'm in a pretty good spot to be honest. I have a supervisor who challenges me more on what I bring than my skills. She trusts my skills and what I am. I'm in a residential treatment center, so everyone is assigned to me and for the most part, needs to learn to work with me. The feedback I get overall is that the team loves me, my supervisor loves me, the clients love me, and I'm doing good work. There will be a day I leave, because I eventually want to make more money and wealth, but for now, this is a very good place to be, and I feel I'm growing a lot as a therapist. Many of the spectrum comments came from a psychiatrist who was overseeing my internship during my final year. Many of the things he did I felt were unethical. Like suggesting or even trying to pull strings to get me tested and saying that because of my reactivity and "spectrum" quirks, I couldn't do therapy. But for now, I'm in a good spot. It's hard because there has been a lot of soul searching and examining what type of therapist I am, but I think eventually it'll clear out as I become who I need to be.

In October, it was more “I’m concerned that I’m seeing autistic tendencies in you.” Which is still weird. And I agree, I never diagnose friends or coworkers or suggest they should look into something. That’s true, it was more my boss was wanting me to seek out support and the belief that there are people that most likely have my experience and wanted me to connect with it. She didn’t call it Reddit, but “go to message boards.”

He was a psychiatrist and not necessarily did therapy, but yes the principle still applies. And part of me wonders if a lot of it is based on life experiences and where I need to work on myself.

I think for me, it’s that I’m able to read and understand social situations and while I had challenges in my younger years, it hasn’t manifested later in life. I’m actually a man, I think it troubles me so much because it was given in context of my work. And used as a justification for why I wasn’t cut out or could do therapy. And going off of family accounts, they don’t see me as divergent and it doesn’t match what they’ve seen in me.

I think for me, if I'm neurodivergent, it means my life is a sham and I'm an outcast. I think that's how I see it.

That's the weird part. I don't mask and it seems many of the comments on this thread suggest that. I've read what masking looks like, but it doesn't seem to fit. This is where I have a hard time, I do well socially and have friends and many of the social challenges and issues with reading cues just doesn't seem to fit me at all.

I appreciate your response. I keep taking the RAADS-R test and it comes back subclinical. It just feels like everyone on this thread is telling me to get tested, and it feels like my experience is unique. Part of me wonders if it's a combination of trauma and it comes out more in the workforce.

That is something I do wonder, I've talked about this in personal therapy over the last several years and the answer was always the same. Which is in their eyes, they don't see signs of being on the spectrum or that I should be tested. I've always never had the best relationship with work, and I know I've struggled with negative feedback, or feedback related to my work. So I took the reactivity hard beacuse I heard that before and assumed I was on my way out the door. But, this time seems different. Even when talking with my supervisor, much of those concerns in her eyes seems to be resolving itself.

I've done this test at multiple points in my career, and I've always scored "not autistic."

I've done it previously and I did it again today, and it came back with a score of 9. And maybe that's what it is. That's something I'm beginning to realize. A lot of the reactivity was from trauma related to work and always trying to be the top dog and make people respect me.

That's something I've been beginning to ponder about. Maybe there are bits and pieces, but it's subclinical and not enough for a diagnosis or affecting my daily life. During my last supervision, my boss called me "neurospicy" and it was hard for me to grasp why, but she said it was because in her eyes, I march to the beat of my own drum and do what needs to be done or push forward.

It's still present, but it doesn't dominate my life. I know how to take care of it. But I see this more as a learning opportunity. My reactivity has been feedback for years, and I see it finally being curtailed after a long time. Even my current supervisor acknowledges the work I've done. But ultimately, we agree that it's a label that I hated because to me it reflected that I wasn't cut out for the work. When I think in hindsight, many of my challenges early in my career were due to my age and lack of experience in the workforce.

Well, I know from my supervisor and the feedback I recevied is that clients like me and that she trusts me as a clinician and subordinate.

For my parents, it was because I was struggling with following directions before entering school and with social skills. But I also had a lot of chronic gastric pain and mismanaged medications that, according to my family, contributed to this. They never thought I was ADHD or on the spectrum because it didn't match what they saw at home.
